Worthwhile WR splurges

What's worth splurging on, even if you have a tight budget?

For me, cake, to a point.  The difference between a $300 cake and a $500 cake can be enough that nobody really eats the $300 cake, but the $500 cake is devoured.

photography - that was the one thing I was willing to spend a lot on.  Turns out I spent half of my photography budget when I finally picked, which was nice :)

    Great food.

Also, venue for me.  I really wanted a beautiful location more than anything.  EDIT: By that I mean ceremony location.

Food, without doubt.  We were on a tight budget and spent most of it on getting a great meal for our guests.

A chair for every butt.  I'm sorry that chair rentals cost a lot, but making your guests stand sucks.

I would say photography and food.

I am splurging on my venue, and by extension on catering (only one caterer works with the venue). We just love it so much and think getting married in a beautiful place where we could have beautiful pictures would be worth it. I am making up for it, however, by having a relatively inexpensive dress, doing minimal flowers, and having an ipod instead of dj (afternoon reception, I would have a dj if we were having an evening reception). I am also saving money on a photographer because my uncle who is a professional photographer is giving us the session for free and giving us prints at half price.

Photographer.  I also splurged on my ceremony music and I loved it.

photography for me....which I guess isn't a huge splurge since my photog is better than the one she wanted and less (sorry but if you can only do posed shots I don't need ya)

    Photography.

I fear I won't always have my memory (my grandma has dementia), and I want to make sure my kids and their kids and so on can look back at days like our wedding.  I love looking back at old pictures, and those pictures mean a lot to me.

    Good food.

I wish we had splurged on photography. It would have been worth it.

I'm going to be vain and say professionally done makeup. I paid for it outside the wedding budget, so it wouldn't impact anyone else's enjoyment of the day and man, was it worth it. I could never have done that on my own, and it looked great all day instead of needing touch-ups.

Photography and food for me too.

Our photographer is the most expensive in Chile (really cheap by US standards though), even with her being my best friend and giving us a discount. I think she was worth every penny.

And food wasn't actually a splurge for us, we thought our caterer was an amazing value, but I would have splurged. It's just so so so important both to H and me (I consider eating out to be our main hobby) and to our guests' enjoyment.

The food. We didn't care about hardly anything else. We didn't have a photographer or videographer, venue was free, our attire was affordable. But the food, we totally splurged on that and it was worth every bite.

Similar to Anna, our biggest splurge will be our reception venue (and by extension our caterer).  I just wanted some place that looked really cool and therefore would require minimal decoration.

FWIW: our reception will be at the Bengal's stadium, which has 3 story glass windows overlooking downtown.

Thanks!  It makes me excited when we catch a Bengals game on tv (since their playing leaves much to be desired).

Photography. It isn't really that expensive (compared to most of my friends).  But since we are eloping, I want really nice pictures to look back on.

Minimal decoration was a big deal to me too. Along with all tables, chairs, and linens being included in the rental package. We are getting married in a Spanish style home and I am obsessed with the place.

Being married in a football stadium sounds awesome though! My friends took their wedding party pics in our college stadium and they turned out great.

Opal, I agree that pro make-up and hair were totally worth it. I would have splurged if necessary, but I didn't think that the amount my guy charged was that much.

Anna - that's really cool!  And definitely unique.

We get to take pictures on the field and I've heard that the men will turn into little boys out there.  I'm so excited!

The food was the best thing we spent money on.  I was cringing when I was paying the bill (it wasn't astronomical, but it was certainly the highest bill for an event I've ever received!), but everyone loved it and they're still complimenting it a month later.  It was well worth it.  I just wish we could have had a little more of it.  When everyone says you won't eat at your reception, they're telling the truth.

Yeah, Emily, mine wasn't very expensive either, but I feel like it's a splurge because it's something mostly for me.

My Fiance and I met dancing... So, we are splurging on the reception/entertainment.  We'll be having an amazing live band (they were on an episode of Bridezillas).  We met listening to this band and the lead singer of the band and his fiancee are in our WP.

The food and venue.  I wanted something all-inclusive because I don't have the patience to do everything in bits and pieces so our venue included almost everything.

I wish we'd splurged on the photographer.  The pictures we got were very good, but she didn't get a single one of me dancing with my dad or H dancing with his mom.  We didn't do spotlight dances, but come on.

We splurged on the location, and it was well worth it. We didn't need any extra decoration and it was a naturally gorgeous backdrop.

We also splurged on the cake, but since I only got one piece, I'm not going to say it was worth it. H's cake wasn't worth the $400 it cost. It looked messy to me.

I splurged on getting makeup for my sisters, mom and MIL. THat was SO worth it because they all felt wonderful. I don't think any of them, except my ex-actress sister, had ever had their makeup done like that. Such a cool experience.

We actually got a great deal on our venue which includes the food, alcohol and cake. So we got way more than I ever expected for our money.

My splurges are definately the photography/videography and my invitations/menus/place cards. The invitations were important to me because they really set the tone for the wedding. I guess they werent even really all that expensive at $5 each and being completely custom and including 4 inserts, designs on the outer and inner envelopes, addressing on the outter and inner envelopes, but they were definately a big part of my budget, but I think they were worth every penny.

For us, it was the food.  We wanted a selection that everyone could enjoy, including my very picky eater grandfather and my MIL who is allergic to pretty much everything.

The meal was fantastic and everyone loved it.  Bonus points - the cake was part of our reception package and it turned out amazing.

There was one item that I spent way more on than I needed to, and that was the cake topper.  When I found the artist who could make us into South Park characters, that became the one thing I had to have.

Food and awesome music for the guests, photography for us.

Two of my splurges were paying for the BMs dresses and hair.  It was nice taking away some of their financial burden, and it was wonderful spending the whole morning of my wedding day with the girls in my hotel suite, getting hair done, chatting and sipping champagne.

We didn't really splurge on anything, but I wish we had spent a little more on photography. I love the pictures that we have, but I feel like we could have gotten so many more and much nicer ones.
