To dance floor...or not to dance floor?

We are having our DIY wedding on some property that a family friend owns next to a beautiful tank with a dock (a tank is basically a big pond for you non-Texans ;) ). We are expecting around 100 people but only 50-75 will probably dance. We have managed to save a lot of money and I really don't want to ruin that to pay for a dance floor. So the options are dance on the grass or dish out the money...  any other ideas?

Re: To dance floor...or not to dance floor?

  • Depends on the kind of dancing you expect. More formal/classical dancing is hard on soft surfaces. Also, a lot of "stomping" in one place will wreck the grass. Are the owners OK with this?

I know the high school where my dad works has raised platforms that would work as elevated dance floors (asuming people are careful). I don't know if he could borrow them for free if it were an issue for us, but borrowing from someone who owns an equivalent is certainly something to look into.
  • I vote dance floor.  If you're dancing on the grass, people might not want to because it may ruin their shoes with grass stains, mud, etc.  Also it might ruin your wedding dress if you boogie too much!

See what the handymen/women of your family can dream up. I thought that maybe some packing pallets nailed together with some sturdy wood that you sand down on top as the floor would work (maybe, I'm not super handy myself) if you wanted something minimal. I don't think it would cost an arm and a leg.
  • i vote dance floor. i wouldnt wanna be sticking my heels in the dirt. or possibly the dust that would be kicked up in a fast song since you live in texasKiss
