    Tokyo is way too expensive.
  • edited December 2011
Tokyo doesn't have enough room! I'd like it to be in the US again someday, but how about someplace other than a large northern city... I was a big fan of Salt Lake City. I think it would be really neat to have them in Dallas somewhere down the road--but is it too hot here? We certainly have the infrastructure and the land!

I think it would be really neat to have them in Dallas somewhere down the road--but is it too hot here? That is the main argument I have heard against having them here.  Plus the humidity is another concern.  I am a big fan of the equestrian events (I started riding when I was 7), and there were a lot of riders who backed out of the games in Atlanta and Beijing because it was too hot and humid and they felt their horse's health was at risk.  If I remember correctly, all of the equestrian events in Beijing took place in the early morning hours (6-10 am), or after dark because the heat/humidity was so high.

Mmh... I'd have mixed feelings about Dallas too.  Don't get me wrong it would be way cool to have it here...but we get our britches all tied in a knot on a Cowboys football game day... much less the Olympics.  :)We totally have the land though.   Austin/San Antonio or Houston could be cool too.

Dallas doesn't have enough public transportation yet.  And, since they didn't get as much stimulus and the state legislature voted it down, it looks as if the green line will be the last new line for a bit.  I know they have preliminary plans for another line but they're probably going to have to put it on hold.

A little late but I discussed this very subject with my AP kids today in class. We read an article this morning on the 2016 Olympics.Rio made a great bid, arguing that hosting the Olympics for the first time in South America would prove that the Olympics really is an event for "all continents, all humanity". I liked this argument. The article claimed Obama's speech to the IOC rested heavily on emotion and visual images rather than facts or reasons why Chicago should host. My main problem was the amount of money. I am not 100% sure where the money comes from for Olympic bids and construction but I do know it said Chicago spent $50 million on their bid to host. I think it would have been better spent on improving issues within the city. For example,  it was all over the news a few days ago about an honors kid killed at Fenger HS ( a Chicago public school). He was beat to death because he walked into a gang fight. How about solving some of those problems? Just my opinion.

Chicago spent $50 million on their bid to host.So what you are saying is now they are out $50 million? Wow.

So what you are saying is now they are out $50 million? Wow.I imagine that any country wanting to host something like the Olympics would need to put up some money to prove that their country can handle an undertaking so big as the Olympics. Kind of like when you put an offer down on a home and you have to put down "earnest money" to prove that you have money in the bank and you're serious about your offer.

I think so if I read the article right. The article is from the New York Times.

I was born in Chicago and spent the first 5 years of my life in that city. I have no love for the place--it's corrupted and COLD! And their houses are ugly

Part of the reason Rio won, too is because they put budgeted $14.4 billion to host the Olympics.  It was more than any other city, even Tokyo.

I'd like to know where Brazil and Rio are going to get the money.

Personally, I like Chicago.  No thoughts on the Olympics issue, but since so many people are hating on it, I just thought I'd pipe up and say that I love visiting whenever I get the chance!

Dang, Marissa! Way to hit below the belt! haha I know it sounds stupid, but when I think of Chicago, I always see the rows and rows of box-shaped siding houses with no brick. I guess it is more of a suburban thing, but dang are those houses ugly compared to similarly priced homes in the South.

You will ALWAYS get more for your money in this area than somewhere like Chicago.  I had a friend who just bought a condo in LA.  It's 2 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, maybe 1500 square feet in North Hollywood.  They say they got a steal (and for that area, I believe them), but they spent over $450,000.  All I could think about was what I could do with a half-million dollar budget for my house in the DFW area.  Sigh.

Late on this but this is exactly what went through my head.  When I think Chicago, I think corrupted politics and crime.  I'm happy Rio got it.  I wanted to see either Rio or Madrid.
