Am I Normal?

Re: Am I Normal?

  • I've been meaning to pick up that book just to read it. My friend just had a baby and used charting to get pregnant. But it's obviously just as helpful to know when NOT to have the sexy time. If you know when you ovulate and when your window is and avoid that time, you'd have a lot of peace of mind, OP.I'd rather have to check my mucus and take my temp before getting out of bed than withhold the nookie.

  • My fear of oral BC comes from a few things. When I was 12, I had a major cyst on one of my ovaries and it burst. At the time, my gyno told me it may affect my fertility later in life. It was hard for me to fully understand at that time. I have never been consistent in my cycle. I can go 3-4 months without. I am scared to mess with many forms of BC/hormones because of that. Also, my friend ended up in the ICU with a major blood clot which the Drs told her was most likely caused from her taking BC.On another note, I have heard that it is almost impossible to get PG right after your time of the month. Does anyone know the validity of this?
  • I know you didn't use it, and I know what ROxy meant, but it was really funny in my head.  It's probably the wine.

  • It's not impossible. Heck, it's not even impossible to have sex while pregnant and not get pregnant again. Find a BC that works for you. Plus, every woma should be on some sort of BC for 5 years because of the health benefits of it. Talk to your doctor about that.
  • You should look more into the charting method. I also never liked the idea of oral contraception because of the side effects, so we use the Billing's method. It's easy to do, doesn't cost a thing, and works great.

  • op - it completely depends when you ovulate.  If you ovulate early, yes, you could pregnant right after your period.Thing is, if you don't chart, you have no way of knowing if/when you ovulated.

  • If she is scared of getting pregnant then the Billings Method will only help her understand her cycle, but it will not help her feel safer about it. Plus, if her cycle is irregular, which it sounds like it is, then it won't work well for her.
  • Wow, you need to do some reading about some things. First, yes, it is highly unlikely that you'd get pregnant after your period because your period's purpose is to flush unfertilized eggs. As most women ovulate at or around day 14 in a day 28 day cycle and sperm live only a few days, there's isn't a high probability of getting pregnant on day 5 or 6 (when your period ends). But every woman is different, so you need to know when you do ovulate to be sure that's a safe time. Also, yes, the pill increases the chance of clots, that's why they say smokers shouldn't take hormonal birth control - it further increases the risk. That's why speaking with your doctor about your risks and personal health history would be helpful.

  • I believe that supposedly most women ovulate 14 days into their cycle but this is certainly not a guaranteed thing. I most likely don't ovulate until 29 days in...it all varies.
  • I hear you all about the charting thing. I will try it, my cycle just finished. The only problem is, as I said, I can go months without it, and then get it 2-3 months in a row. I have always been like that.
  • Have you talked to your doctor at all?You really should.  Sex is so important in a good relationship.  Like PPs have said, look into NFP and charting.  Its effective if done right.About taking the pill, it could help if you have an irregular cycle.  I went on it when I was 17 bc I wasn't having periods, and if I did, it was bad.  Not only did it make my period regular, it was bearable as well, and if you take it right its almost 100% effective. If your doctor thinks the pill isn't good for your health, she'll let you know, she's not going to give you something if its bad for your health.

  • Also, (bc I read your most recent post just now)As long as you regularly have your period every 2 or 3 months (there's a pattern) charting will still work.  It might take a little longer to figure out your pattern, but it still works.

  • am - also, every period is not necessarily from ovulation.  You could not be ovulating at all and still bleeding, but again, you won't be able to tell unless you temp/chart.You can also check out www.fertilityfriend.com for more info.  They also have a free tutorial course that you can sign up for over email.

  • By knowing your cycle, you're able to identify the days where you are most fertile and the days you are not. Therefore, you know when you are most likely to get pregnant and when you won't.

  • I don't know much about charting, but if she's that irregular, is it a good choice? Also, since you ARE that irregular, I definitely owuldn't trust the not getting pregnant right after your period. You have a shiit load of learning to do about your own body, forms of contraception, and sex in general, I think.  I'm flabbergasted.

  • shelly - of course bc makes your cycle regular, but she still may not be ovulating and not even know it....if you don't ovulate, then you can't get pg...

  • I tried talking to my Dr about it about 2-3 years ago, before I even knew FI. I felt like she didn't help much, she just kept pushing low dose BC on me. It was about a 5 minute convo and she rushed me along with a script I never filled.
  • Not all doctors are like that.  Perhaps you should try a new doctor.

  • Well, then find a new dr or a nurse practitioner!  You deserve good health care and someone who listens to you.

  • If you're that irregular, then charting may not be the best choice. Like PPs said, seek out your options and hopefully you'll find the right method for you.

  • If she doesn't want to get pg, doesn't she not want to ovulate?OP--If your doctor is pushy like that, you might want to find a new one.  They should never push contraception on you.

  • every period is not necessarily from ovulation. You could not be ovulating at all and still bleedingI know this but it terrifies me. I've got to try charting..Also, Amle- have you spoken to your Dr. about the irregularity? I used to have the same thing but its gotten more...regular-ish.
  • thanks for the website Sucrets. I am going to read on there.
  • There are other types of NFP other than charting/temp.You might also look into the mucus testing.  Its kind of gross, but basically you go by your...um...mucus.  I'm not as familiar with this form, but its just as effective.  It might work better since you are irregular.

  • Yes, you could randomly have cycles where you don't ovulate.  Your body can't sustain the build up, so you bleed, but it's actually anovulatory bleeding and not a period.

  • Um, I went on BC when I was like 16 BECAUSE I got cysts. Like, multiple, all the time. They said if it continued I probably would have fertility problems. So really, if you're worried about cysts, BC actually is prescribed for preventing them, so that's not even an issue. It's kind of funny actually, that I'm on BC in order to protect my fertility, ha.
