Carry on & personal items

I know this has been asked MILLIONS of times, and I apologize in advance.....For those of you that have or plan on carrying on your dress, are you bringing some sort of personal item too?I am going to carry on my dress, but I was also going to bring a small back pack to carry on my camera & lenses (I refuse to check them) Do you think this will be ok to be considered my "personal item" or vice versa (back pack as carry on and dress as personal item)?TIA!

Re: Carry on & personal items

  • I had a backpack and my dress... nobody said anything! I flew American Airlines if that makes a difference... but it was no problem whatsoever! :-)
  • We flew American...DH carried my dress on and his backpack, I had my backpack and a purse.  We had zero problems.
  • I flew Continental and carried on my dress and a messenger bag as my "purse" and never had any problems at all.
  • I carried on my dress and had a bride tote bag. We took Continential to Miami and Delta back home and didn't have any problems with either. I know I was very nervous traveling with my dress but there was no need for it.
  • Your personal item can be a purse, backpack, computer bag, etc.  It just has to be small enough to fit under the seat infront of you.  That is the main distinction between the two.  One of your carryons can be put in the overhead bin so it can be larger but the personal item is suppose to be smaller.  This is the same on any airline.  I was a flight attendant for Delta, fi is a pilot for American.  Hope this helps!

  • I was planning on taking a rolling duffel for the overhead bin, my dress and my camera case (I refuse to check mine too). Maybe I'll have FI cary my camera.
  • I was planning on having a large purse/tote bag and my dress. I have one that fits just about everything I could need, hopefully it won't be too bad though... or I could use my Macy's bag...they gave away a cute tote when you registered and it would be the perfect size.
  • I carried on my dress - no fun for either of us lugging that through the airports! - and I also had a roller carry-on size bag. Then-fiance called the USAir desk directly at the airport and they said my dress could be my personal item. Didn't make sense but I certainly was happy to hear it!
