Balloons as centerpieces?

I am having my reception at the 20th Century Theater, my colors are going to be black and cobalt blue, maybe some purple mixed in. I want the atmosphere to be fun, but still elegant. I saw some pictures on their website from a party with balloon centerpieces. They are kinda of neat, and definitely different, but I'm just not sure. I would also be putting some candles on the tables too. Not sure if mine would look just like these, but similar.     Personally, I am not a big fan of balloons as centerpieces. They remind me of my high school dances because that is what we always used to decorate the tables. In general, balloons remind me of birthdays, not weddings. While it doesn't look bad in those pictures, I think if you're going for an elegant look, balloons aren't really the way to go. JMHO. But if you're looking for something a little more on the 'fun' side, and less on the elegant side, I don't think the balloons look bad. btw, nice color choices! We are doing a similar color scheme.

    Hmm, baloons typically also remind me of highschool dances or kids birthday parties but I do like the photos better than I had thought.  Check out the blog entry (link below) from Tres Chic Event Planning with photos and a discussion of baloons at weddings.  I think it could work but I also think you have to be really careful to avoid making it look too much like a circus.http://treschicbride.blogspot.com/2009/03/wedding-trend-balloons.html

    I'll be entirely honest and say I really don't like the idea of balloons as wedding decor.  When Kristen posted that blog post, I cringed ever so slightly.  Even with those pics, I'm still not a fan.  The only one that I think actually "works" for a wedding is this one:[img]http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_WgYFFhw7dcs/Sama5hv8MvI/AAAAAAAABlQ/hWzOIYzllIk/s400/white-balloon-wedding-ideas.jpg[/img] I think that's probably because of both the color of the balloons, and their shape.  I think the round balloons look a little more classy than the typical balloons you see a birthday parties, and could possibly work at a wedding, depending on the rest of the decor.

    I hate balloons because they remind me of a prom. That said I'm sure it could be done tastefully and the 20th century theater would be a better place then most. Good Luck!

    I pretty much agree with everyone else, especially hrparker. Round balloons create a different feel. Circles are my theme, so I thought about using round balloons, but I like the idea of the Japanese lanterns better. I'm creating my centerpieces to mimic the lanterns.

    yeah I'm really not into balloons. My prom didn't even use them. I think they're ok for my 4 year old but not a wedding. IMO Also I don't think it would be safe since you said you wanted to do candles. Helium is VERY flamable.

    Thanks guys! I was leaning towards no, and when I ran the idea past FI, he instantly vetoed it! No balloons for us!
