  • Whit - One of my friends does that as well. She can't believe how much debt I have and then goes on to say how lucky she is that her parents paid for college. Well, so did mine but I had to handle the loans and interest myself. Her parents paid in full every year.

  • Hey shan - what was your major specifically?  Would you be interested in teaching in public schools?  NY has now added dance to its curriculum and I know is hit hard looking for certified teachers.  So far the only place in my area that offers a degree is NYU and it's so freakin' expensive.  I don't know how it is in Texas, but I know their music program is fantastic.

  • I don't have any debt, but I don't think I'm high and mighty about it!  I also chose to go to a state school, plus I paid for my Masters out of my pocket.

  • I have a BFA in Dance Performance.I'm not "certified" to teach in public schools because there is a seperate test that you have to take in Texas.  I'm considering taking the TExES test to get certified if we have to leave Austin.  I would happily teach dance in the school system... or just as happily another subject.Working with kids is the major priority... teaching them a particular subject - not as important. That's so amazing they're doing that in NY.  Texas is just cutting all programs and dance edcuation is minimal.  Most HS have a drill team - but that's about it.  The occasional middle school will offer a class.
  • Sucrets, I'd definitely say you're not high and mighty about it :)

  • Yeah, the student loan debt is a major sore subject for me.  In high school, I had the choice of going to an average state school on basically a 75% scholarship or an elite private school with good financial aid, but still considerably more expensive than the state school.  Everyone pushed me to go to the private school because "a degree from X means you'll be able to write your own meal ticket after graduation!"  WRONG.  I loved my college experience, but I so wish I would have gone the state school route sometimes.I hate everyone so much for assuring and reassuring me that getting an awesome education would automatically equal a well-paying job.  So far...not the case.  At all.

  • I know, it sucks that things are getting cut.  I don't know of any schools that have full time dance positions, but then again, I don't know about a lot of schools!  They might be out there.  Even if they hired you part time, you could teach a class or 2 during the day, right?  I would guess that you mainly work after school hours, so that might be something to look into and I think worth it to take the test.

  • Thankfully, the only debt I have is a car loan with only a year left.  The student debt will hopefully get DH an amazing job, though.
  • Thanks, whit.  I fully admit that I didn't realize back then just how awesome a present it was from them.  I had no idea!DH has loans, but only from grad school and it was for cost of living.  The amount they got paid was ridiculous and wouldn't even pay for rent on LI, neverless food and other stuff.

  • DH and I both went to state schools (UT), but it's still so freakin' expensive. DH put everything.single.thing. (housing, food, tuition, books, entertainment) on loans for 4-5 years.  Then, for grad school he lived with his parents, which saved tons of money.  It's just shocking how it adds up.One of the best things my parents did for me was pay for my college.  Saved me financially.
  • Honestly, I am happy that I chose the state school route. I applied and got accepted to 1 state school and 6 out-of-state/private schools. I would have triple the student loan debt that I do now had I gone elsewhere. Phew!

  • Roxy, didn't you dye your hair red not that long ago?
  • I used to always get uber bitter towards my ex when he would flaunt his lack of loans in front of me. His parents paid for all of his college (and he was the guy who barely passed every class because he didn't care) AND got a weekly "allowance" of 1k so he wouldn't have to get a job while working soooo hard on his studies.Dh and I are pretty lucky though, we only have about 8k of student loans between us (although it sucks that we only have 1 degree for those 2 loans..), but we also have his bike and my car :(
