Names: Luke and Jake

Do you think Luke and Jake are stand alone first names or nicknames?  DH and I were arguing this last night.  I prefer just Luke and Jake, but DH thinks they're nicknames and the first name should be Lucas and Jacob.  What do you think?

I think of Luke as stand alone and Jake as a nickname for Jacob.  Jake could definitely stand alone though!Love them both!

I always think of Jake as Jacob, but Luke doesn't necessarily have to be Lucas.

I echo everyone else with Jake being short for Jacob and Luke can stand alone.  You wouldn't want your son to be reverse nicknamed (as in his name is Jake, and people call him Jacob because they are ignorant).  My DF's name is Richard...and I do NOT understand why d!** can be his nickname.  we are NOT naming our son Richard in case people call them Big d*** and little ****.  Ugh!

I'm all for naming your children what you plan on calling them!  I'm with you on this one.

I think they can both stand alone - though I personally like Jacob better than Jake.

LOL - I am of the opposite school of thought. I like longer names and giving the child a nickname or two before other people can.  :)  Our names are a secret, but we won't call the baby their formal name very often.  :)

I like them both, but I would go with "Lucas" and "Jacob" because I always think about future employment and the child as an adult. Jake and Luke sound like younger names, whereas Jacob and Lucas sound like adults to me. (I think of dumb stuff though, like introducing someone as President, an attorney, etc).Like remember when Bill Clinton was President and they'd introduce him as "William Jefferson Clinton." It sounds important to me, haha :)

I like all of the names, but if you name them the 'longer' version, be ok with people calling him Jake or Luke. It isn't fair to expect people to know that you (the universal 'you') don't like nicknames. I like Jake G. and think that you should find him and touch his chest now! :P

KR, do you have both a boy and girl name picked out?  I wish DH and I could both agree and love something! Isn't your big u/s today?
  • edited December 2011
well you know how people call the father like Big Jim and then Little Jim?  DF is 6'4" so I can see him being the Big.  lol.  I think if you pick a longer name, you should decide his nickname before the rest of the world gets to have an opinion.   My parents never gave me a nickname, and I had a variety of them in grade from teachers, friends, coaches, etc before I went to college and just settled on Bri.

Angela, we had to move it to tomorrow.  I'm running a meeting this afternoon for our sales force and it was the ONLY time it could be scheduled, grrr.  Tomorrow at 1:40 though, yay!  We do have names picked out, although we haven't completely decided on a nick name for our boy name or for sure on our girl middle name.  I had to make DH swear to stop asking for opinions...he is driving me crazy!Bri, I know exactly what you mean.  My dad is famous for doing crap like this.  He calls the baby of good friend's of our family "Chipster" since the father's N/N is Chip.  Um, the baby's name is Ethan.  It has nothing to do with Chip.  Gah, Dad.

Jacob is one of our picked out boys' names- love it! I don't know why, but we picked it out a while ago and I'm not even KU (and will not be for several years). Things could change of course.

I guess I just always loved the fact that my name couldn't be shortened is why I love names withouth obvious shorter nicnames. I had a ton of friends named Elizabeth and so manyof them became Beth's, Liz's, Betty's, and so on, it was a weird transition when they wanted to change it in the work place. I ust think it safer to have one name and that be that

KR my mom does the same thing to my sisters kids. My nieces name is Abbigale and my mom calls her Gabby. and I have another niece and her name is Makayla, my mom calls her LaLa. Drives me NUTS! I was hoping I could pick out names for my future children that she will just call by their name, untill another sister of mine had a kid and she won't call her by her name either..

FWIW, my (grown-up, ha!) DH is a Jimmy, not a Jim or a James.  He has a diploma/resume name to use, but NO ONE calls anything other than Jimmy.  Guess that's not much of an issue since students and parents call him Mr. Lastname (which I almost just typed, haha!)If anyone saw the office this week, I've been calling him Jimothy.  LOL!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha! JIMOTHY! So funny, KR. Thanks for the laugh. Love that you are calling DH that. I have friends that were Jackie and Joey when we were young and they are now Jack and Joe. It is hard to call them that. Poor guys.

I like them both as standalone names and actually don't think of Jacob or Lucas at all when I hear the names.

That's cool Kwynn, I was guessing it came from "Rick" as well.  I remember around 6th grade, all the boys in my class who used to go by "Timmy, Jimmy, etc." started shortening their names.

My dad is James professionally and Jim to all his friends, but his entire side of the family insists to this day on calling him Jimmy despite him telling them to stop for like forty years!  "Jimothy" is hilarious :)

When I was teaching, I really tried to call my students by what they preferred to be called. One of my parents was very helicopter and insisted we call her son "Gregory" and not "Greg." Okay, fine, but if you name a kid Gregory, a lot of people will call him Greg! :) She really was irritated by it and the poor kid was like 17. That's a long battle to fight if you hate the associated nickname.I would not call my students nicknames that were not related to their actual name (you should see the requests I got at the beginning of the year, like "Meatbox" and "Rawjii" which was not in anyway his name and was pronounced like a lion's roar, sorry, but no!) and I would purposely avoid calling them overly cutesy nicknames that are better suited for peers, not the classroom. (After all, this was high school, not first grade, so "Lala" and "Kay-Kay" are not really appropriate).
