Anyone following Pinterest's copyright infringement stuff?

Some interesting discussions on TN, and a friend posted this one of my fb groups--this blog gives a good overview of the issues associated with possible copyright infringement by Pinterest users. From what I gather from another article (will link if I can find it again), Pinterest has covered their ass in regards to people misusing or not crediting pins but it's entirely possible that users *are* in fact infringing on copyrights by not quoting sources or summarizing the entire recipe/tip/information on the pin itself. Interesting stuff I think.

  • Oh interesting, never thought if it like that. If I ever am an original pinner of, say, a recipe, I only give the title. I wouldn't ever put the full recipe in the title! It's annoying anyway to have a huge title.

So, I don't necessarily put the "owner's name" in or whatever, but people would have to click on the pin and go to the blog if they want more info.

  • I don't get it.  Even if I don't say I got the recipe for what ever in my comment, the pin still links you to the website it came from, so what is the big deal.

If someone pins something from my website, the pin links to my site.  I don't see any copyright issue.  I think those people who are complaining about don't fully understand what the site is.

Not if you're pinning from Google, uploading it from your computer or pinning the homepage of the website, instead of the specifc pin, which is exactly the problem. I'd venture to guess most people pin it "correctly" like you're saying, but I've definitely seen pins of stuff I like that doesn't go anywhere, with no credit given.

  • I don't like when people pin right from google anyway cuz its like "Ok, cool hairstyle. But all you gave me is the final pic. I need to see the whole process!"

  • Yeah agree Binxy!! I love getting to the original blog!!

  • The pins go to the original site so it's not like I take credit. I pin wedding stuff from my blog and it's annoying when people just repin and don't change it from "My..." I do watermark all of my stuff though
  • I only pin from other peoples boards because I'm not pinterest smart

Hehe then you can't get sued!! Nicely done <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-laughing.gif" border="0" alt="Laughing" title="Laughing" /> I'm covered I think, since I credit or comment on mine. But there are people "doing it wrong" even though the intent of the site is crediting original people.

I only learned how to edit captions today. I think a lot of people don't know you can. I mean, I didn't know before today.

I only repin stuff. I've never pinned anything original either.

  • I have this one pin from my old makeup work (I put up REALLY old stuff so that if something does get "stolen", I don't really care), called "blue eyeshadow" that gets pinned like 3 times a day! I just know someone out there is claiming it to be their work! Oh well.
I NEVER get credited for it, either. I also mostly pin from someone else's board, or credit people, like on my Blogs board. If I'm going out of my way to pin something on my own, I am for sure giving someone props for a job well done.
  • @CAB1217,

Just repinned a couple of your pins, great taste btw. :)

Disclaimer: I'm probably one of those people who will end up like the 12 year olds pirating music... I'm just too lazy sometimes to change the caption that's already there if it says exactly what I was going to say anyways!
