DH (almost said FI!) is insisting that I change my name today! I still can't make up my mind. I thought the decision making ended with the wedding.

Can I inquire as to why he insists it's today? Is he trying to help you make a decision by setting a deadline or is it something else?

He thinks I'm putting it off. I mean, I have been slightly, but I've also been extraordinarily busy. He has time this afternoon to go with me and wants it to just be done. We've been putting off chaning car insurance, getting a bank account together, etc until I get the official name change. I know I do need to do it. I'm just incredibly indecisive. Thanks, Kim. That helps. I'm really not attached to my middle name, but Graham thinks it's very weird to have a last name as a middle name. So now he has me thinking that it may be.

If it helps, I also like how it sounds on FB :)I had no problems deciding on my name change, but my DH still rushed me to get it all finished for the same reasons. We needed to change bank accounts, insurance, etc., so I had to do it quickly. If you aren't ready though, you don't have to.

You can still get car insurance and a joint bank account with your name as is if you are hesitant. It isn't too difficult to change your name on those if you decide to do it.

So, if I tell ppl I'm Sonya current last name, it will be kind of right even though it will technically be my middle name? Hmm, if I'm reading this right, I'd say no. I never use my maiden name anymore, except when writing out my full name. I just refer to myself as Kim Ward.

That's what I've been saying. And actually, I'm going to make him make a decision on car insurance right now and just get it. His expires next week. Whether I change my name today or not, I'll just change it on the insurance...

Don't put off getting joint car insurance any longer!! You'll save so much money, at least we did!It took me a while to change my name too, not because I didn't know what I was going to change it to, but because I was busy and didn't want to be bothered! So tell him to chill!

It took me like 3 months to change my name. Not for any reason other than not being able to take off work to go to the soc sec office. As I said before, I went with the more traditional route and dropped my maiden name all together. I'm more attached to my middle name than maiden because it's my mom's middle name too and if I have a daughter, the middle name that I would pass to her. DH preferred that I dropped my maiden all together and because I didn't have a strong opinion one way or the other, that's what I did. I have never once regretted my decision.

Sonya - Yes, I took DH's last name. My maiden name is long and hard to pronounce (as you can see on FB!), and I really like DH's last name. My middle name is Ashley, and I think Jennifer Ashley sounds nice, so I didn't want to lose that. To me, my first and middle name is MY name...where my maiden name is a family name. Keeping my first and middle name was just more important to me I guess.

Jen, that was a really great way of explaining it! I also feel like my first and middle names are MY names and my last name was my family name. I'm starting my own family now and am excited about having a new family name.
