Donation Favor Question

I was thinking instead of buying favors that we would donate to the ovarian cancer foundation since my mom had ovarian cancer last year. She is now cancer free after surgery and chemo. Do you think this is appropriate? I just think a lot of times people throw favors away so this would be going for a good cause. I am so blessed to have my mom still with me.

That's fantastic to hear about your mom. :)I know a lot of people aren't fond of donation favors, and, generally, I'm not either. However, this seems like a great example of when it's entirely appropriate to make a donation like this.

Agreed HR. I sometimes think that donation favors dont have many ties to the family, however, I feel this is totally appropriate. Congrats to your mother. I lost three family members to either breast or ovarian cancer and I have a huge risk myself. Good luck! I think its a great idea.

We did donation cards and found that people were very touched that we made a donation on their behalf.

I think it's a great idea. DH's mom very sadly died of ovarian cancer the year before we got married. I (and he) would be honored if we attended a wedding where our favor was a donation to such a great cause.

I think this is a wonderful idea. I agree that most people throw away favors. We are making a donation insteas of buying favors too. FI lost his fatehr this year to cancer so we are donating to the America Cancer Society and Susan G Komen because I lost my grandmother to breast cancer. A donation will actually make a difference instead of favors. I love whenever I go to a wedding and someone made a donation.

Yes I think this is appropriate. If you still want to give a physical favor, you may consider Cheryl & Co's Cookies for a Cure. A part of the proceeds are donated to cancer research. If you don't want to buy online, you can find a local store in Columbus (it's cheaper, too). We are thinking of doing the same thing as well. My mom is on the state board of the ACS. She has dealt with cancer as well as both of her parents and my dad's father. It was very important to her to make a donation to the ACS as a favor. A lot of my close friends have also had parents nd grandrnts battle cancer and I think they will be very touched. I am also thinking now of doing some sort of cookie or candy as well though, so some people don't feel jipped even though favors aren't really required.

I think Christine's suggestion is a great one. I've actually had the cookies and they're very yummy. This way, you're making a Donation AND your guests get something tangible. Also, just an FYI, but "jipped" (or "gypped") is actually a racist term. It has it's origins in the racist belief that gypsies and others of Romani descent were cheats and crooks. Just thought I'd throw that out there ...

We were actually talking about this at my fiances parents house this weekend, his brother is getting married a few months before us and they want to donate to the Humane Society and a local breast cancer memorial instead of doing traditional favors.
