H1N1, Swine Flu, whatever you call it...

So, we're four days out from the wedding at this point, and I'm so excited. BUT... FI had his bachelor party last weekend -- an entire weekend of drinking and football games and poker down in his college town in Mississippi. Fun times, except for one of his friends leaving early on Saturday because he was feeling very feverish -- turned out he has the swine flu. The guys spent the rest of the weekend freaking out that they were going to get sick, but everyone seemed okay. One of FI's friends called him this morning to say that he too feels sick, and he's going to the doctor. I am freaking out that FI is going to get sick (and by extension, me too). Four days out! I guess I just need some reassurance. Or, if you've had it, how long did you feel bad? Does anyone know what the incubation period is on this?

From what I understand, you are contagious until the fever breaks. And if I recall, poor Vogt has had it for quite some time. I think it tends to linger unfortunately. Keep up your vitamins and liquids. Hope it bypasses you all!

I don't know about incubation period. My friend had it a few weeks ago and was flat for 7 days. You are supposed to be quarantined 48 hours after the fever ends.

also, if you feel like you're getting sick, if you go to the doc and it's early enough they can prescribe Tamiflu which helps prevent you from getting super, super sick. a lot of people don't know this.

Yeah, except that unless you have complicating factors (pregnant, asthma, etc) you're NOT supposed to go to the doctor, and they likely won't give you Tamiflu.

I got tamiflu when I had swine flu. I started feeling better just over 24 hours of starting the meds.J&K why do you say it's not likely you'd be given tamiflu?

If you are past a certain point, they won't give it to you, at least they wouldn't with my friend.

You may want to call your doctor and see if they would suggest you take antiviral medication. I know it cannot prevent H1N1, but it may reduce the severity and duration if you do get it.

Really? Maybe it's just around here. I had a friend who called the doctor and they told her she likely had it, but not to come in. She asked about Tamiflu, and they said they were only giving it to the people "that really needed it" --the people in the high risk groups.

Isn't Tamiflu the stuff they won't give you if you have asthma? I know I can;t get the spray up the nose flu "shot" becuase of the asthma.

Well I'm sure with their wedding in 4 days, he'd go to the doctor as soon as he gets sick. Although it's highly unlikely that he'll get sick now.

Take your chances with the Tamiflu though- its a gamble. Several people I know have bad reactions (think severe nausea, etc) to it. People can be contagious before they actually spike a temperature. And as for how long it lasts- my cousin just had it and she was able to go back to school today (but only made it through about 2 hours) after getting sick on Friday.

That's really odd, especially since H1N1 can be very severe in normally healthy people. aMrs, tamiflu is an antiviral, not a vaccine. My daughter has asthma but she took tamiflu.

Hellooooo the incubation period is 24 hours. It doesn't matter about when the person you were exposed by had a fever, yes they are contagious then, but if you don't get sick within 24 hours of exposure, it's highly unlikely you will. This is the info we were given by our infection control specialists.

That's what I thought too, Colleen. They said they were trying to conserve it, so maybe it was just the one place and they were running low and waiting on some more to come in, or something. Apologies for giving misleading info!

I work in marketing for a large sanitation supply company and have done lots of research for H1N1 since people were calling our company like crazy when it first hit. The best advice I have is to wash your hands A LOT. Sanitize (Purell or something similar) A LOT. Keep your hands away from your mouth, eyes, ears, nose. And like PP said, drinks lots of water and keep up on your vitamins! Good luck!

Yes well the more east and west you go, the milder it tends to be down here. I can't imagine it could be much different there. Those of us stuck here in the middle tend to suffer.
