Name Change

Okay.... I've been totally lazy and am FINALLY getting around to all the name change stuff.  Question for those married ladies still on this board. :-).... do I need to go to the SS office first and change my name there before I can go to the DMV and make the license change?  I was just trying to read through all the documentation on the website, and they made it sound like my new name has to be in the SS computer system before the DMV will issue me a license with my new name.  Does that mean there is a wait time before I can go to the DMV too?  Help!   It's a slightly more complicated ordeal for me, since I'm getting a CT license and registration and my old ones are NY, but hopefully that won't be an issue.

Any advice and guidance would be great!  Thanks!

I went to the SS office first and they give you a print out you can bring to the DMV (since your new SS card will be mailed to you within 2 weeks). Bring that print out along with your current license and your marriage license to the DMV or one of those photo license centers and you'll get a new license with your new married name for free! HTH!

Thanks Kate!  That's great that they gave it to you for free.  I bet they'll charge me though because I don't currently have a CT license. boo...

Hoping I can take care of all of this on Friday... crossing my fingers! :-)

I was able to get my license without my SS card.  My first stop was the DMV.  I went to the SS office directly after.  The policy may be different at other registries.

I went to the SS office first. But I did not need the printout they gave me for anything. I just brought my marriage license with me to the DMV and that was sufficient. It was actually really easy at the DMV they don't even charge you for the replacement. Well probably in your case they will because you don't haev a CT license. The only place I needed the paper SS office gives you was at my employer.

Great post! I was just wondering how all this works.

I did SS then DMV, and like others said, I didn't need paperwork from SS for the DMV.  I just showed the marriage license.  And they don't charge a fee for the new license because the expiration date is still the same.  Even though I got a new license a year ago, I need a new one soon.

So since you do not have a CT license at all, they will probably charge you for one.

I went to SS, and then to DMV and was finished wtih everything in about 30 minutes, so no wait time. DMV just looked at the marriage license...and just a warning...they took a new picture!
