I'm angry...

Re: I'm angry...

  • Gros wages minus deductions should equal net. Just because your witholding status is the same doesn't mean there aren't other factors. There is only a problem is Gross minus deductions does not equal net. If that is the case, there is a glitch in your payroll processing program. You should be concerned about the calculations your sftware is making if they don't add up, but don't get angry and make assumptions that the software calculated his net differently because he is male. That is very short-sighted of you. Also, there are lots of percentages invlved in payroll processing that may or may not produce fractions of cents. I am on salary, I make the same gross wage every pay period, but because of fraction of cents, sometimes my paycheck is a few cents off from the last one. But still, gross minus deductions equals net. That equation should be the focus of your concern. Getting angry about it helps nothing, and is actually quite silly. The only reason you would have to be angry is that if his hourly rate was higher than yours, and even then, who would you be angry with. Perhaps he just negotiated a higher wage when he came in and now its your turn. One thing I have learned in accounting is that payroll is not something I want to learn the details of, nor do I want to be charged with setting wage rates. Just because you are sorting paystubs does not give you the right or responisbility to inspect them for errors or compare them, even though human nature may convince you that its ok.

  • I would be much more angry if I found out a co-worker was snooping to see what I made. I would try to get you fired if I were him. You should be ashamed of yourself.
  • I wonder how your co-worker would feel knowning that you were not only viewing but taking apart his paychecks to find whatever minute reason has caused a $2 difference in your pay. It is one thing to see or glance at someone's pay while doing payroll but if you can't be honest enough to not take apart his deductions, his salary and benefit info, etc. then maybe you can't be trust to work payroll at all.
  • Oh jeebus, sorry for the errors, its been a long day. And, I was just thinking back to an incident where I used to work.  As it turns out the woman that was doing payroll was going through everyone's paychecks to see what the difference was in their wages.  Someone found out she was doing this and not only did she lose her job but many of the employees and the company sued her.It isn't cool to spy on people's wages regardless of how unfair you think their pay is compared to yours.
  • Retread - did you read the post? While your situation sucks.  The OP's is different.  They do make the same wage.  But his take home pay is $2 more (not an hour, just $2).  That could be from extra hours, deductions, taxes, a computer glitch, etc  Having $2 more in your NET pay does not equal he gets more money because he is a man.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Ditto Lynda - it bothers me that anyone is encouraging this girl. It's irresponsible because if anyone finds out that she is going to such lengths to tally her coworkers gross vs. net pay, she could be fired.
  • There's countless reasons on what could cause the mere $2 overage.  I would recommend not basing your status and life on what someone else is doing and/or has.  IMO, if someone is immature enough to flip out over $2, and post this info on an popular internet board, him making more than you probably has more to do with how you handle yourself at work and nothing to do with the fact that you're female.

  • "If you have exactly the same wage and work exactly the same hours, he cannot mathematically make more than you." -- whoever posted this is wrong. This does happen all the time, esp in privately owned companies. It is not illegal either. I work in HR and I see this all the time. If someone wanted to defend him, all they would have to do is add a responsibility or two to his job description. This sucks, but it is true. I agree with you being offended. It's not the fact that he gets more cash then you, it's the fact that you feel underappreciated.. I understand that. However, I don't know how you should approach this...
