What's the 411 on SGK being so controversial? I'm curious. (yes, I'm googling it. Just thought I would foster some discussion while we're at it. get this place back up in the double digits)
I was wondering that also. Maybe they payout a lot in admin fees so most of the money does not go into research?

Mandy, the Canadian One, has opinions on this. I can't remember what they are, but I'm pretty sure she's against cancer research foundations like that.SGK = Susan G. Komen foundation
I have heard things about SGK along the lines of what Lynda said...there are other breast cancer organizations that some people consider to be more "trustworthy" with donations. that's about all I know.
According to wikipedia, some people don't like SGK because they donated money to Planned Parenthood to brovide breast exams to low-income women. Apparently, Curves (the fitness place) used to be a sponsor, but pulled out because of it- the place is owned by a super pro-life dude (reason number 1 not to join Curves...).

I can see why people would be pissed about the PP thing. Not just b/c they are pro-life, but b/c when you give to a charity, you expect it to go to that cause, not some other cause. Here's what I have the most beef with:Komen has also been caught up in the controversy over "pinkwashing" — the use of breast cancer by corporate marketers, in which companies promote their products with claims to donate a percentage of proceeds to the cause. Komen benefits greatly from these corporate partnerships, receiving over $30 million a year and expanding overall breast cancer awareness. But critics claim many of these promotions are deceptive to consumers and benefit the companies more than the charity.
From what I understand it is the combination of the Planned Parenthood and the general whoringout of "pink" slathering on everything they can get their hands on. Pink Kitchen Aid mixers are cute but are they really helping support breast cancer research? Maybe not.
I had a cousin who attended a wedding where the brides dress was light pink to symbolize breast cancer awareness... I guess her family has been affected A LOT by the cancer. Cousin said it was tasteful, not creepy, etc. In the program, it said something like, "The bride purchased her dress from ***. All proceeds from the dress were donated to the SGK etc..." The pics were gorgeous. Colors were light pink and black. It was not a fund raiser. .. Ok. I'm gonna have to say I think people are way too easily offended. But I've always thought thought when the donations in lieu of favors comes up.It's the bride and groom's money. You don't get to decide how they spend it.

moose - it's all in the wording. In lieu of favors the couple is donating to 'x' charity.. okay The couple it donating to 'x' charity 'in your name' I do not like. If I do not support the charity I do not want anyone to donate in my name.

I'm also going to admit that I've never understood the hatred here of a theme for a wedding. I get that some themes are over the top and ridiculous, but not all are.And whothefuckcares if someone has a theme?
