New Jersey

Poll: Where in NJ would you live...

...if you could live anywhere/afford the home you wanted, the taxes, etc.You have to name a NJ town/towns.I grew up in West Caldwell & liked it but wouldn't necessarily return. I like the charm of neighboring Essex Fells; I'd probably buy there if I could.I would not, however,  be opposed to living closer to the ocean, though in what town I'm not sure.

Not too familiar with too many NJ towns but Syn took me driving through Upper Montclair and West orange and we saw some amazing homes there.I also wouldnt mind upper saddle river or Closter.I dont want to go to far south and would love to be less then an hour away from the city.

Rumson on the water.  MH grew up in Middletown and when he takes me by the water and I see those houses I am always in awe of these people.  I also would not mind Alpine with the celebs.

I'd go right to the shore, LBI specifically, and live in one of those gignantic waterfront mansions. I'd have enough room for my family and MH's family to visit.

Westfield, ideally with a summer/weekend house on the water somewhere so FI can have a boat. Id name a town for the beach house but I dont know enough of them to know which one Id pick. Maybe Brigantine (sp?) so we can also be close to AC

One of the nice houses on the Ocean (not Ocean Ave, but on the actual Ocean) in Deal.  It is right near where I grew up, the beaches are more private, and you a block or so away from the main road and have more privacy and not so much traffic right in front of your house.  And there are a ton of great restaurants in that area!

The waterfront in hoboken, or jersey city.
  • edited December 2011
Mountain Lakes or Boonton Township would be very nice.

Assuming that we'd both be keeping our current jobs ... maybe Maplewood? We were looking into houses there for a while and it seems like a decent area.FI would probably pick Rockaway. I have family down in Freehold and I like that area, and Colts Neck is gorgeous. I'd love a Shore house somewhere but I can't name a particular town off the top of my head. We used to vacation in LBI when I was a kid and I miss it there. I keep saying that we should buy a house in Asbury Park. I get the feeling that that area's going to shoot up suddenly, like Downtown Jersey City and Hoboken, and a house might be a good real estate investment for us. Plus I like how kitchy the boardwalk and all those buildings are. I could be wrong, obviously. Plus FI is not interested in the least :PWe both grew up in Hudson County and still live there, and cannot WAIT to leave. Ugh.

MH totally opened my eyes to the beautiful towns in Monmouth county.  I would have never in a million years have ever thought about moving down that way until I met him.

If I was going to live near the beach and getting to work was not an issue I would live in Spring Lake. I love that town and the houses are fantastic. My other option would be Upper Saddle River the streets around there are so hilly and windy and most of the properties are huge!

Thanks Mrs. F :) If we look into buying there, I'll contact you. I'm surprised that several of you are interested in Jersey City. I guess it's just funny to me because I watched the area grow upward, and it was a total dumphole when I was a kid. The church where we're marrying and where my family attends regularly is in the Hamilton Park area, and it was borderline dangerous back then. My mom actually grew up in a brownstone in the same area. In the early 80s my parents could've bought a building for $6k. My mom refused because she always regarded it as the "poor area" and couldn't wait to go someplace "better." The same brownstones are going for around a million dollars now :o

I didn't grow up in Jersey City, but most of my family did as well as Newark.  I lived in Hoboken briefly, but not in anything nice.  I called it the batcave. When they sold our childhood house, we made a nice chunk of change.  Our realtor wanted us to buy this dump apartment bldg. in JC.  I could kick myself now.

I love the area I'm from -- so probably Bedminster, Bernardsville, Chester, Far Hills, Harding, Long Valley, Mendham, New Vernon, Peapack-Gladstone, Tewksbury ... that area.  I guess that would be Somerset Hills, sort of?  Corner of Hunterdon/Somerset/Morris  I like that area because it is rural and pretty, but still close enough to lots of stuff.

Ditto uppereast. My ILs live in that area and I just gawk at the houses. Of course I'd also have to have a shore house in OCNJ, like on 1st or 2nd street and Corinthian.

I am also surprised so many people are saying JC.  I lived in a aprtment in a very nice building (The Pier for anyone who knows the area) for a year, and while it was nice and I had fun (and did enjoy the view of midtown from the apartment), I was ready to get out of there. I am just not a city person I guess.

I love the town where FI and I are buying a house in. We also really like Summit too.I lived in Caldwell for 11 years and it was nice. I was so close to town and such. If it had a train station we would have stayed.

I am just not a city person I guess. Grass is always greener, I guess. Had I grown up in the suburbs I'd probably want to move to JC/Hoboken as well. I actually wouldn't have minded a cool apartment in JC/Hoboken if we could afford it, but FI thought I was nuts. I liked the idea of being a young couple in a trendy area before we have kids, but he's all about getting a house and a decent piece of property. Our friends have a cool apartment in downtown JC and sometimes I get really jealous of them.

I live in West Orange - and honestly I wouldn't want to move anywhere else.  Maybe to a "nicer" neighborhood, but honestly my neighborhood is very very nice, I live on a dead end street so we have privacy, we are right near 280 and bloomfield avenue, and I LOVE my house (I better since I Just spent so much $ renovating it!)
