I recently received a wedding invitation from a friend that had something interesting printed at the bottom in small font that said... "respectively no boxed gifts please". I was at first shocked at this but then started to think maybe it's smart. Is it still seen as completely rude to politely ask for cash as a wedding gift or is it maybe ok?!?!?!?

Asking for cash is always rude. I would give them something in a gift bag if they put that on an invitation to me. And take the gift out of the box so they couldn't return it.

Any mention of gifts on any invite (baring showers, sort of) is rude. Period. That means no mention of "no gifts," no mention of registries, etc.

I think it's kind of hilarious that they were not only rude but said "respectively" and not "respectfully." My dad tried to get me to do the same thing...I guess regifting runs rampant in my parents' circle of friends, and it's now the NORM to do this. I told him that I'd be happy to donate any regifts without gift receipts to goodwill.

I think it's rude. And BTW no boxed gifts at the reception does not mean you can't send one to the couple's house. Just saying Regardless any mention of gifts on an invite is a no-no.

That's what she'd be getting.I've told this story before, but my grandma got a graduation announcement that said "no gifts, please" at the bottom. I assume it meant "send cash and checks only." Grandma didn't get it. And she still sent a gift. A cheap, crappy one. I LOLed.

Heels: That is a lovely wedding cake made entirely out of bathroom towels and cloths in the color of my choosing. No tags, so sadly, the towels cannot be returned. Best gift EVER! i make them and gift them whenever someone tries to tell me what to give for a gift. I'm usually a registry buyer, but if someone asks for cash or I find them excessively tacktacular, they get the towel cake. I do use nice towels though. You can order them online and shipped direct. I give diaper cakes for baby showers.

Don't forget to cut the tags off................This is why we didn't register, and why my mom was in charge of telling anyone who asked, not me. My line was, "it isn't really necessary." Depending on who asked, I sometimes added, if you really want to do something, we are working on the house and trying to make home improvements, like redoing floors/painting/replacing windows and something like a Lowes g/c would be appreciated, but it totally unnecessary.I usually ignored the question.

Asking for gifts of any sort is not ok. Boxed, bagged, naked, whatever. (true for all "gift giving" occasions)It's smart if she wants to piss people off. Otherwise, notsomuch. Seriously, you invite GUESTS to your wedding. Not GIFTGIVERS.

There is no "polite" way to ask for cash. You're friend's little note is appalling and extremely tacky. She isn't sending invitations - she's sending an invoice. Shaking your guests down for cold hard cash isn't okay. I'd decline to attend if I received such a rude invitation.

I got an invitation yesterday to one of FI's friends' weddings. They not only included where they're registered - they included huge color logos of the store with website and 800 numbers. Saying no boxed gifts might be worse, but I was pretty appalled. FI, on the other hand, thought it was pretty genius, which is why I am doing most of the wedding planning!
