It's funny to see all of these towns listed as "good commuting towns." I grew up 20 minutes out of NYC and later in life lived literally 1 mile from the city and would never think of these places as a close commute. I felt far living right next to the bridge! (particularly watching the daily traffic and wrestling with it when I was going to grad school). What do people consider to be a good commute? Less than an hour? Less than 1.5 hours? Less than a half hour?

I've never lived closer than an hour from NYC, and now I live about 90 minutes by train. A LOT of people I know, whether it be kids I know whose parents worked there, or people who now work there, still live in town and commut(ed) the hr to NYC, mainly by train. My FIL did it for about 15 years.

I have to totally agree with kewltif, I grew up in Bergen County as well.  My fiance and I just signed the contract on a house in Saddle Brook, low taxes, great neighborhood for kids with good schools and within 3 minutes of every major highway, which is most important to me as I commute to the city by car everyday.  The actual distance to NYC is about 7 miles, it can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour with traffic.  I totally couldn't imagine living anywhere else and commuting to NYC.
