Megana, check out the Osborne Family Spectacle of lights at Hollywood Studios (MGM).  It's amazing!  I think it starts Nov 10.

thanks!  Yea we've been doing our homework and came across that last night.  We saw a video on youtube and it looked really cool.  DH went more recently so he's pretty familiar with everything, but I haven't been since I was 7.  We're definintely going to all the shows (illuminations, wishes, fantasmic, etc.).Just googled the hoop de doo review - looks like a lot of fun!   And erika - that restaurant looks really good!  We actually got the meal plan so it might be more affordable if we eat there using our meal plan!

Erika - 600 for the two of you????  dddammmnnn!!! Meg - Like I said - Hoop di du revue is awesome.  BAsically it's a dinnershow.  It's like a western show kind of but it's hilarious, and they get you in on the action.  It's A LOT of fun.  Everytime I go, we go three, and usually we're with different people, so we bring them to join the fun!  It's like fried chicken, ribs, beans, potatoes, corn, etc etc.  southern food basically.  Then there is all you can drink soda/beer/wine/sangria that's served in jelly jars.  That's just a brief synopsis! 50's prime time cafe is also great.  It's a cute restaurant that's themed in the 50's (they have old school dennis the menace playing on tv and stuff)  The food is really good too, terrell always gets the country chicken.  and if you go MAKE SURE YOU GET THE SMORES.  they're awesome!  Basically the people who work there (waiters/waitresses/hostesses/bartenders) pretend that you are part of their family.  They're hilarious, and make you laugh the whole time.  My friend had to wear a paper had the whole time because she kept getting caught with her elbows on the table.  Terrell had to stand up in front of the whole place and sing i'm a little tea pot on his birthday! Fultons crab house - not as exciting, but great food. wolfgang puck's is there - i have only been once.  it was good, not AMAZING though. I will think of more and sned them as I think of them! :)

I think you can take a hot airballoon ride in Downtown Disney now.  Not sure if that has opened yet and I don't think it is like a FULL ride (might be tethered downso you only go up so far), but could be fun.  Not heard of anyone going on it yet, but I have seen some pictures, it is decorated like peter pan.

I ditto everyone that loves Disney.  FI and I have gone every year since we started dating and have a blast everytime.  We like Disney because you have a variety of things to do.  There are days when we just sit by the pool and drink, there are days we go to the parks and there are days we do both. We always go for Memorial Day and while there are a ton of kids around, we dont have to take any home with us, so we can deal.  I think it is awesome so watch little kids get so excited to see the characters (I get excited too :)).  And when the kids are bad, it is great birth control.  We are also big kids at heart and enjoy the rides, etc, but can also go out have a nice dinner and some drinks.  Meghana - Try the Yachtsman steak house in the Beachclub hotel.  If you are big steak people, you will love it there.  I also really like Narcoisse's in the Grand Floridian.  Where are you staying?  Sorry if I missed it in another post.

Thanks Angie!dana and angie - We wanted to stay budget friendly so we're staying at Pop Century
  • edited December 2011
If you're going with any children, I'd suggest Breafkast with Mickey in the contemporary - if no kids, don't go.  it's just a regular breakfast buffet, but the characters make it worth it. Big River Grille  is on the boardwalk (near epcot) and it's a brewing company.  they ahve good beer, and their food is pretty good too. In the dolphin and swan (can't remember which one it's in, but they;'re both on the same property anyway) there is a sushi place.  It's called kimonos i believe. Are you going for thanksgiving?  we went one year for thanksgiving with our whole family to visit my brother, and we had thanksgiving dinner at the grand floridian - it was AMAZING.  so much food, (not only turkey day food either) I had to be rolled out. again if you have kids, cinderella's royal table (it's actually in the castle itself)  i think it's a little pricey though from what i remember.

I stayed at Pop Century with some friends once while I was in college.  It's a cute hotel.  When you check in, or even before, you should request your room in one of the front buildings (close to the lobby).  The problem with the budget hotels like Pop Century, All Star Sports, Music, etc. is that they are really big and often only have one bus stop.  So it can get crowded and it is a pain to have to trek from the back of the hotel to get to the bus or if you just want a cup of coffee in the dining hall.Pop Century is fun...every half hour or so the staff in the dining area all get together and dance the hustle ;)
  • edited December 2011
that's usually what we did also - budget was the way to go.  I used to stay in the all star sports/music, etc. Now that I have the timeshare, we'll be staying in the animal one (can't even remmeber the name for some reason right now.)

Thanks dana!  no kids, but i'll look into the other suggestions :-)  Also, we're arriving in Disney the saturday before thanksgiving and coming home the wednesday before so we won't be there for thanksgiving.bridemaidpro - Yea that was a concern of ours too.  We might end up upgrading to a preferred room (which would put us way closer to the bus stop).  If not, we will definintely request a closer standard room.  We did notice that is is a bit of an issue with the value resorts, but we're not too concerned.  This is just a quick getaway for us and a chance to get out of jersey for a few days :-)  Had this been a special occassion trip or something we probably would have splurged for a different resort but we got a great deal for the total package! Despite the issues, we did hear that the value resorts are still nice :-)

Another rave for Hoop Dee Du.  Sometimes it does sell out so I'd check on that one sooner than later.  50's cafe is a hoot.  It's fun to rent a motor boat and go around the lakes. My favorite thing to do is get up early for the opening of magic kingdom as well as walk along main street at night with everything lit up.

We always stay at the Swan and Dolphin and love it there.  Dana you are right, Kimono's is the sushi place and it has great food and kareoke (sp?), it can be a little pricey though.  They also have a Todd English rest, Blue Zoo which is good but $$.  The small resturant in the Dolphin, Fountains, has good inexpensive food, their buff chic salad is so good. I forgot about the Brewery on the boardwalk Dana.  It is very good there and not too $.  You can make a reservation there, FI and I like to go for dinner and you can sit outside right on the boardwalk and see the epcot fireworks if you time it right.  Ahhhh I love Disney, but this year our vaca is our Honeymoon :).  Dana-can I come with you in May?? :)  That is awesome that you got a timeshare.  We might look into that once we have little ones.  Is it at the Animal Kingdom lodges?

OMG, Hoop-De-Doo Revue is sooo much fun!  And if you go to the late show and stay in a Disney resort, they have buses waiting for you after it is over to take you right back to your hotel.I have been there 22+ times, my family is a little bit hooked and a little bit obsessive.  There is so much to do there though and I definitely suggest signing up for one of the "Behind-the-Scenes" tours.  It's a lot of fun and different thant the normal busy-ness of the park.

angie - yes, animal kingdom lodge.  I don't have a timeshare AT disney, but with rci in ft. lauderdale instead.  However, they allow me to trade into disney resorts, but we just have less availability than if we actually owned a disney property...

There is so much more to do in WDW than you think.  We did choose to spend our HM there because we are not lay on the beach people and both love Disney.  They have wonderful restaurants, fabulous spas, amazing fireworks, fun rides and shows, and we enjoyed all of it!  Take a romantic carriage ride from Port Orleans Riverside (call ahead). Here are a few yummy choices:Le Cellier (very hard to get a ressie)Hollywood Brown Derby (get the Fantasmic pkg)Narcoosee(timed with fireworks)California Grill(timed with fireworks)Artist PointBomaKona Cafecheck out http://allears.net/menu/menus.htmStay away from Chefs de France.  The waiter took Mike's food away well before he was done as he was taking a pic of Remy.  It was literally like quick service, food was out to us in minutes.Speaking of quick service:Wolf Gang Puck Express at Downtown Disney Marketplace--so goodYou are going to need to make Priority Seatings ASAP at all the restaurants.  You can either call or make them via the Disney website--good luck! Also, most items under $4 count as a snack, not just the soda, popcorn, popsicle that they put on the brochure.   We had so many snacks left over that we brought huge cookies back home.Any questions, I'd be happy to help.Lisa Beth

You're welcome--we love Disney and already have a trip in the works for just after Xmas 2010/2011.  It was so hot this time, we can't wait for cool weather.  Just visiting the hotels is nice-all are so different and really beautiful, especially if they are decorated for the holidays.

The weather should be nice when we go.  Cooler (mid 70s) but still comfortable.  And all of the holiday decorations should be up a week or two before we go, so that'll be really nice!

It's the most beautiful time to go--enjoy and be a kid!

I work for Disney- so any suggestions ANYONE needs let me know. I have a great list I made that has my suggestions on it- if you are a coffee junkie like I am than you will also hate the Nescafe- I can give you the good places to go. If anyone wants insider info and tips- give me your email and I'll send away! Also- Disney is definitely adult-oriented. My friends and I go for a girls weekend every October for Food and Wine Festival- so much fun! There is so much to do at WDW for adults- of course I am biased :-) Nightlife though- there are only a few places left open since Pleasure Island is temporarily closed... go to Jellyrolls on the BoardWalk- it's a dueling piano bar and so much fun! $10 to get in though. Restaurants- you need to call ASAP to get reservations! 407-WDW-DINE... Hoop Dee Doo is a must, Jiko (Animal Kingdom Lodge- hard to get to but well worth it), California Grill (these will all be 2 table service ones), there are also a lot of quick service places that have great food- especially in Epcot! And the holidays are a great time to be at Disney- make sure to see the castle lighting ceremony, and put aside at least an hour just to stand and watch and walk around at the Osbourne lights.Have fun and send your email if you want more info!

akmackay - i would definitely like your view on things at disney. I have been MANY MANY times, but I am in no way an expert. Like I mentioned above, my two faves are hoop dee doo and prime time. We're going may 23-31 with my husband, son (who will be 2 1/2) and a newborn (will be 2 months then). I may bring my mom if she's available so dh and I can have some time together. WE're staying at animal kingdom with my time share. so.....anything you think I should know, shoot away! :) thanks! my email is ddelo23@aol.com and just curious...what do you do for them?

Will send you what I have today or tomorrow- and I work for their meetings/conventions in a remote office here in NYC- but I started off working for them in Florida for all groups so I know far too much! And being a Disney junkie I definitely visit more times than is natural. AKL- are you staying at the regular or Kidani Village? I was there in August and LOVED it. You're 2 1/2 yr old will love it! And if you're there- Sanaa is very good. Go there for lunch- it's a bit exotic but could even be a nice time for you and your DH to get away for a bit.
