I haven't done this yet, and I tried to call to figure out if you need an appt. It was SUCH a PITA! The system is completely automated and to speak with a live person you have to wait 10 minutes minimum. So if anyone knows, I'd appreciate knowing the answer to this too!

I didn't have an appointment.  I went to the office in Poughkeepsie, though, so no help there.

I haven't gone either, but will probably go to P'kp. I went to White Plains about 4-5 years ago and I think I had to take a number and wait, if I remember.

Linda - I tried calling as well and go NO WHERE after like 15 min! Ugh! My sister went to the one in Hartsdale/WP and had to take a number and wait forever....I'm hoping Peekskill will be better...?

I had the same exact problem with calling the SS office in Newburgh. I can't seem to get a hold of anyone on the darn phone. I think I'm just going to go there in person and hope I can get it handled swiftly. I'll just have to do it on my lunch somehow since I used up all my vacation for the wedding and honeymoon.Good luck girls.

Don't know if this is any help to anyone, but I've been numerous times to the Hartsdale/WP ones with various family members for various situations. You usually don't need an appointment for most things, you take a number and wait. They do say though avoid the begining of the month and the begining of the week because those are generally more crowded. I don't know if there's any truth to it I usually find SS office visits a crap shoot.

Go to the website print out the form and fill it out.  I went to the office in New Rochelle, first thing when they opened in and out in 5 min.  All I needed was my marriage cert/lic and my passport.  Got my card a week later.  No appt nec.

I went to the office in West Nyack. No appointment, just went in and got a number. Had to wait maybe 20 minutes and then just showed them my passport and marriage license. I think I had to fill out a form but nothing major.

I went to an office down here in NC, and I was in and out in 5 minutes. They didn't even ask me for that form that's on the website. She asked me some questions, took a look at my marriage license and sent me on my way.

I went in Newburgh and didn't need an appointment.  I was pleasantly surprised how painless it was.  Good luck!

I went to the Greenburgh office and it was super quick and easy.  I made sure to get there 1/2 hour before they opened so that I wouldn't have to wait forever.  I was the 4th person they saw and it only took about 10 minutes at the window.

I finally made it to the SS office in Newburgh. Pretty painless... all I brought was my driver's license, birth certificate, marriage license and the filled out form. I took a number and waited about 10 minutes. There was someone else in there though who said she had been there for 40 minutes. I was called right after her so I think they may see people based on what they're there for, not necessarily in the order they got there.

I went to the office in Peeksill, and got there right when they opened. I had printed out the form before I went and the entire process took me about 10 minutes!
