DJ for a bride on a tight budget

Hi, I am looking for a DJ that is good and under $1000 for 5 hours.  FI and I met with a DJ a week ago and something didn't feel right his price was good 575 but he has no references.  I am also looking for either A. a DJ that can do ceremony music in a garden or B. another option for ceremony that is um...cheap.  It is frustrating to see our budget dwindle since FI's job is as I call it "on life support"

JamKat Entertainment has some great rates. He starts at about $600 for 5 hours. You can add lights and other things on if you want them. I know he can do ceremony music too, we didn't need it though. He was great, the dance floor was full all night and he didn't do anything cheesy.   I even asked him for a song I forgot and he got it within a couple seconds. (And it was a little obscure)http://www.jamkatentertainment.com/

our Dj was $900 for 4 hours, he played soprano sax along with some background music and dd the ceremony as well. His review is on my married ("party") bio... and he worked with us so well! Jeff Ladd is his name, I do encourage you to check him out and get a quote!!

We used Latif from the Pros (www.thepros.com) for our DJ. I think it was around $1000 for 6 hours and 2 set ups, 1 on the deck for the ceremony and 1 for the reception. Great prices and great to work with.

i can't help with a DJ rec (we played an ipod, which i actually highly recommend...it worked our surprisingly well!) BUT for ceremony music, do you know anyone who plays any instruments? for example, a good friend of mine from high school played flute for us at our ceremony. it was her gift to us, and it was perfect. if not, check out local schools for music students (Univ. of Hartford has a huge music program). thats what we were going to do before my friend agreed to play...

I went to Hartt (briefly...), so I can speak to the quality of the music students there.  All of the departments, instrumental and vocal, only take very high quality musicians. Also, they are poor and always looking for a job to do!   You just want to make sure that if you hire a student that they're reliable.

Just a general piece of advice: if you see someone out of your price range, ask if they are flexible. I used QNR Productions out of the Boston area (where I live), and as it turns out, they have family in Hartford so were willing to travel at no cost. AND, they knocked $400 off the original quote. I was completely shocked, but it turned out that this was my absolute favorite vendor and totally took over when my venue dropped the ball.
