Getting in Shape

Q&A Tuesday!

Hi ladies! It's a boring Tuesday and I would love to know more of you ladies here. :) It seems that we have quite a few runners, but what else.. It's fun to see everyone's "track" all in one place!
It'll help us see each other's progress, goals, etc. :)

1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?

2. Favorite exercise?

3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?

4. Favorite work-out clothing item?

5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)

6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?

7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?

8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?

9. What is your food weakness?

10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?

Re: Q&A Tuesday!

  • 1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
I have never had weight issues, but never been truly FIT. Now that I'm married I fear the "wife weight gain"!  Healthy living it is!

    2. Favorite exercise?
Body Step! It's my addiction. When I finish with my degree, I'm planning on going through the program to become an instructor.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
Spaghetti Squash. holymoly I could eat it every day. I LOVE pasta, so this stuff is my hero! That and Pumpkin! Pumpkin puree with nonfat greek yogurt is heaven.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
My red lulu scuba and my vibrams. Both make me feel super pumped to start sweating.

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
My goals right now are just to flatten out that tummy and shape up those arms for Florida spring break.. but overall I want my body fat % down two more percents. It's definitely not wanting to budge right now. grrr!

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
Fast food and soda. I don't care about the "oh, but I drink diet! it's so great.. " nope. no. Not even. It's bad. It wasn't until I cut out soda and fast food that I was able to REALLY feel my fitness level grow... and I now look back and am shocked it took me so long because I don't miss either even a little bit.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
(I know this one is going to be touchy.. and some people may flame me for putting this in the Q&A)
I usually don't notice people when I'm at the gym.. I'm too focused on my form/technique to pay attention.. but I hate..
    1. Guys that drop the dumbells like they just can handle it..dude.. you're ruining the foor.. there are SIGNS saying don't do that.. Either do one less so you have the energy to set it down properly, or go lower in weight.
    2. Girls there just to get hit on. Yeahyeahyeah I know you can't tell that, but yes you can. I have watched girls come in in cut off shorts, flip-flops, and bikini tops, just to stand around and talk to guys lifting. Seriously? Have some self-respect...

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
Zumba. I have been wanting to try it and my gym has it, but I have a bitter taste in my mouth from the women at our gym that do it. They (generalizing) are so incredibly rude when they come in after my BodyPump class it just turns me off from sticking around and giving it a shot... One day I will...

    9. What is your food weakness?
Oreos.. oh man.. I can eat a bag in one sitting and still want more. That and Chips with Sour cream. Both are absolutely HORRIBLE for you so I cut them out of my life... but it's like an addiction.. I will always want them ;o) haha!

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
Yes! I research like crazy, but I am still confused about fiber/protein amounts. I get all kinds of numbers and it is soo frustrating to understand! Some places say 35 grams some 100g, some say you're fine as long as you are within 10-30% ok. good. got it.If you get too much it'll be stored as fat and/or hurt your liver. ok got it.
What about fiber?! Does it have adverse affects? confusing... lol.. So much to learn..

    :)

  • Love this idea!

Hi ladies! It's a boring Tuesday and I would love to know more of you ladies here. :) It seems that we have quite a few runners, but what else.. It's fun to see everyone's "track" all in one place! It'll help us see each other's progress, goals, etc. :)

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
I used to be very overweight but that has nothing to do with it now.
Aside from that whole looking good for the wedding thing, I live for baking.  I have coconut meringues in the oven right now. :)  So I've got to keep working out to eating all of this deliciousness.

    2. Favorite exercise?
It changes all of the time.  Right now, I'm actually loving squats.  This is the first time my knee has been strong enough since my surgery (which was nearly 10 years ago at this point) to do them.  Even now, I can only do two exercises at a time that stress my knee on any given day, but I try to make squats one of them!

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
    homemade chocolate granola

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
My alma mater's Under Armour line, with some oversized Target shorts.  I'm pretty sure I look like a boy, but I loathe clingy clothes at the gym.

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
    Flat stomach

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
I've always despised soda.  On the healthy end, I hate kale and those other weird greens.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
Half naked people, and if I can see your nipples.  I also very much judge improper form, and I will politely say something if you're seriously at risk of injuring yourself because of said form.

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
I really want to get into intensive boxing.

    9. What is your food weakness?
Oreos, ice cream, and any homemade treats.  Oh, and taco night, I love tacos.  Does a big plate of pasta count as a weakness?  Oh, and cheeze-its, and goldfish, and wine, and...you get the idea.

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
Only the people that hog treadmills going 1.0 miles per hour and the women who think ellipticals at 0 resistance will give you an intensive workout.  You people confuse me.

<div>I went through that, too!  Protein levels really depend on workout, but the closest I've found to what a nutritionist recommended for me was what Sparkpeople said.  At 140-50 and 5'6", I need at least 70-80 grams. </div><div>As for fiber, it depends on the person (according to my gastro specialist.)  My body can't process fiber, so I have to ensure a low fiber diet.  The specialist basically told me that I would still have sufficient fiber levels without trying to force extra fiber into my daily diet.</div>

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
*To not be a fat mom someday and actually be able to play with my currently hypothetical kids, to be able to find my size in regular stores, to know that I look good and thus feel pretty.

    2. Favorite exercise?
*Old-school floor exercises like push-ups, crunches, and stretching. But I do love the NYC ballet workout too.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
*Peanut Butter. Babybel cheese, asparagus, and celery with laughing cow herb cheese spread.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
*My Asics.  I'm so glad I went to get fitted for shoes.  I didn't know they could feel this comfy after a long run.

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
*I just updated my ticker from 50 lbs to 75 lbs as a goal and I'd like to run a 1/2 marathon.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
*I'll try anything once.  I do have a gluten problem so I shouldn't eat wheat.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
*just myself.  I have a home gym  ;)

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
*Lots of them!  I want to do yoga the most though.  I just can't validate the class cost.  They're really expensive due to lack of studio competition.

    9. What is your food weakness?
*Bacon and cake.  Not so much a weakness since I DO eat bacon in moderation and cake will kill my stomach, but i think i could take down a whole package of bacon on my own if the opportunity arose.

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
*Tons of stuff.  I wish it was an exact science without variables for individual people.

  • 1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
For the big day! i've been trying to lose some weight for a while now ( about 10 pounds) but I just haven't been motivated!
    2. Favorite exercise?
Walking with my fiancé around the lake

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
I love salads... the kind of salad that is full of topping and differentveggies. I also like grapes, watermelon, mangoes, guava, tomatoes, Japanese cucumbers.. I like eating tofu and sushi, but I don't do it on regular basis because it can be quite expensive!
    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
    My workoutpants!

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
My main goal healthwise is to lose weight and drink more water and do some facial treatments to be rid of pimples and oily skin. I also want to do something to help get rid of cellulite that I have ever since I was 12. I'm thinking maybe linfatic massages..

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
    Brussel Sprouts. Ugh.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
Girls who go just to flirt. I hate that! I think that if you are going to a gym you should work out, not just stand around and flirt

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?

I wanted to try JUMP classes that are on the miniature trampolines.. the problem is that I work at the time of the classes.
    9. What is your food weakness?
Sweets... cake, pie, chocolate.. you name it!

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?

    No, not really!

  • 1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
To look good in my wedding dress, of course, but to become healthy after letting myself go for the past year (plus). I couldn't walk up the steps to my classroom without being winded a few months ago. It was a huge wake up call.

    2. Favorite exercise?
I am obsessed with Jillian Michaels and her circuits. I think I have purchased all of her DVDs via Amazon Instant Video.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
I love smoothies, peanut butter, cheese sticks, and apples. I could seriously eat 5 five apples a day. Honeycrisp is my favorite kind. And I like any green veg--brussels sprouts, beans, asparagus, kale, etc.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
My compression pants from Old Navy.

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
At this point, I want to continue losing about 1 lb/week and inches. I'm beginning to see some definition in my arms and abs, so it's been a bit exciting. Overall, I'd like to be down about 40/50 points.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
I am really picky about my meat. I was a vegan for about a year a while back. Chicken has to be pure white--no brown spots. I am iffy on pork and beef, too.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
I don't go to a gym because they scare me.

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
I would like to get back into ballet. I've been looking into some ballet company workouts.

    9. What is your food weakness?
CARBS. Salty or sweet. I could eat french fries every day for the rest of my life. Also, thick slices of cake, brownies, and bread.

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
Yes, when I am eating right (counting WW points) and working out six days a week and the scale doesn't move. Wah.

  • Love this!

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
Our wedding, myself, and of course pictures of myself at our wedding! yikes! I used to be really thin but all my partying and care-free days (and I quit smoking) caught up with me. I probably gained about 20lbs in the last 5 years.

    2. Favorite exercise?
Almost anything Jillian Michael's. Quick, effective, and keeps me interested (I get bored VERY easy working out). I also love hot yoga, even just becuase I find it soooooo relaxing (though I'm a sweaty beast when I'm done!)

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
Love whole wheat pitas, most fruit, yogurt, all natural peanut butter.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
My lulu wunder unders - seriously, my legs and butt instantly look awesome when I put those suckers on. If it could, I'd live in them; however, might not be appropriate for the office!

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
Right now: this will sound awful, but get my dress taken in as much as absolutely possible! haha seriously, fitting is April 19th so it's game-on until then!
Overall, better lifestyle choices - I have felt AMAZING in the last two months. I've never before felt that my diet and exercise changes might be lifestyle changes. This feels different. I'm not forbidding myself anything, I'm just making decisions more carefully (for the first time EVER I turned down grilled cheese on the weekend - I made homemade guacemole and baked pitas which is the same amout of cals but WAY more nutritious - what's up with that?!)

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
I seriously love food. Love it. I'll try almost anything. I do not like black licorice flavored stuff, I'm not a big rosemary fan, liver, turnip... ya know, gross stuff! haha

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
I don't go to the gym for fear of being judged! haha I work out at home. I judge myself harshly enough, no need for the gym!

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
I think I've tried everything I've wanted... I have no coordination whatsoever (like NONE) so that limits my interests :)

    9. What is your food weakness?
Does wine count as food? I haven't given up red wine. I save it for the weekends but I still have it.
Lately, I've found it easy to say no to things I'm normally not able to (weird). But I do like diet coke every once in a while (I sub now for sparkling water but I sneak in a diet coke a couple times a month).
Chocolate - I have 4 squares of dark chocolate (90 cals) when I'm craving. Totally fixes me up!
Used to LOVE fast food... but lately it's easy to say no!!! (YAY)

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
    so far so good!

  • I'm bored!

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
General health--in particular life living with FI. I wanted to start with good habits. I've always been pretty skinny, but skinny by no means means healthy or in shape. I am working toward being in better health and hoping that makes me happier and less sick.

    2. Favorite exercise?
Never thought I'd say this, but I'm kinda a runner now :) I love running on a nice day, it's wonderful.
I also love to swim. I swam competitevely in high school and would love to get back into it but it bleaches my skin and there's no way I'll start back up until post-wedding.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
A few months ago I hated it, but greek yogart. I also eat crazy amounts of sunflower seeds. I don't know if it counts as healthy though.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
    My socks

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
Short term--continue working out and/or running up until the wedding despite craziness in schedule
Semi-long term--I want to run the Detroit Half Marathon I think it's in October.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
    Tomatoes. That's about it.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
People who bring their smallish children and let them "workout"

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
Lots. I'd love to do spinning sometime. I'd love to do P90X if we had the space. I'm working on tennis and golf.

    9. What is your food weakness?
Starches. Bread. Pasta. I love it all.

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
Not that confuses me necessarily but I struggle to find a balance between eating too much and too little. I'm working on it.

  • Yay! I'm glad so many of you responded :) These are so fun to read! Especially the foods and exercises :)

acaponi- I know what you mean! I always feel like it's a struggle between too many too few in calories for the day. Like today for example.. I've had about 1,300 calories.. but then I just got back from an hour of BodyCombat and an hour of BodyPump. Now I'm CRAZY low ... blah!! Too complicated!! :o

shauna- haha.. Yeah.. I pretty much would live in my lulu stuff if I could. I recently got a couple cute tanks that make my boobs look rockin' if I'm just wearing a normal bra... My husband was like "oh.. great.. you're never taking off your workout clothes now that you can wear them with heels and jeans... " bahaha.. darnstraight!!

Anna- have you checked the yoga places/gyms in your areas for their facebook pages? They often will have their "introductory offers" on there that they won't say to your face when you actually GO. I know that the Bikram place here does a $10 unlimited week for new people.. and the YMCA does classes for like.. 2 bucks a class.. You don't even have a Y near ya? :/ bummer... I think we're really lucky living in Washington. There are gyms all over the place so prices are super cheap. My gym is only 23 bucks a month.

Lobster- That's about what I stay around.. maybe a little lower.. between 60-70g a day... But according to my livestrong account I should only be in the 30s.. yeah right. lol. That's totally unrealistic for me. I'm 5'8 and do two hours at the gym every day but Sunday. No way is that enough. Thanks for the reassurance. That makes me feel a lot better :)

I'm sad that a couple of you fear the gym :( I uesd to feel that way because I didn' tknow what the heck I was doing.. and then I realized that most people are working out and obsessed with themselves, form, technique, etc too much to give a crap about what I'm messing up! haha :o

    I think this is awesome!

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
Reason One: I don't want diabetes, heart disease or to be at higher risk for cancer.
Reason Two: I want to look good! Not just for my wedding, but for life. I am tired of wondering if people are thinking about my fat.
Reason Three: I knew when I started researching gastric banding, it was time for me to change my ways.

    2. Favorite exercise?
Right now I'm really into C25K. I can't say that I LOVE running, but I LOVE that I'm learning how to run. I also love lifting weights.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
Oranges and grapefruits. I could live off of them.. Not really, but you know what I mean.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
If shoes count, my new Brooks Glycerins. They are amazing. Went to my local "Running Room" where they actually HELPED me find shoes for my poor feet!

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
At this point in time, my goal is to lose 1.5 to 2 pounds per week. My current "overall" goal is to weigh in at 150lbs. I started at 210 and am sitting at 194. After that, I will re-evaluate, but I don't think I've weighed 150 since I was 14 years old.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
I'm picky, there's a lot of things. Bananas probably top the list. I keep trying to push myself to like foods that I hate, but bananas just aren't changing for me. Yuck!

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
Nope. I feel like I'm at the bottom of the totem pole. I know some of the people I go with judge that there are some very overweight people just walking really slow around the track - but I think "at least they're here."

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
Kettlebells! I just can't seem to find a class at a time that works for me and won't break the bank.

    9. What is your food weakness?
There are SO many, but I'm going to go with pizza - any kind. Thinking about it now makes me salivate.

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
Nothing comes to mind right now... :)

  • haha Sarah! I HATE bananas. Then.. I started at the gym more.. then I realized it was the perfect after-work out kick.. Now I still hate them, but eat them almost every day -_- bahaha...

Shoes totally count! I'm glad you found a pair you love because that's definitely a difficult thing to, and it can make or break your work outs. I LOVE my Vibrams so much. I did about two years of research on which pair would be perfect for me (I take forever with decisions.. lol ) and since I finally found THE pair ON sale, I am now in love :)

Congratulations on your weight loss journey thus far! It's a long, hard road no matter where you are on the journey, but it's great to see how motivated you and other ladies on here are.. It really keeps me motivated :)
  • I know it is now wednesday, but I want to do this and be involved too!

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
Our wedding day, looking good in my dress, feeling good about myself, pictures, and looking good for my future hubby :)

    2. Favorite exercise?
playing "pick-up" basketball, I played in college and LOVE the sport. I coach so I like to play with my girls, I feel I burn way more calories doing this for an hour than anything else!

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
right now I am hooked on grapefruit! I cut one in half of a morning and sprinkle splenda on it to sweeten it and then eat it at lunch! It feels my sweet tooth!

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
Sport tank tops to run in!
    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
Right now I am 1 lb away from my first goal. We have e-pics this weekend and I have a goal for that! That will ber a total of 25 lbs so far. My overall goal is 55 lbs by the wedding in Sept!

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
this isn't healthy so I don't know if this counts, but I hate chocolate. Seriously, the smell makes me sick!

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
"body builders" really just women who try to look like men. I don't think its attractive

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
    zumba! (I can't dance)

    9. What is your food weakness?
    sweets

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
its not really a confusion more of a frustration. When some people can eat fast food and sweets everyday and not workout and be a size 2, and us bigger women have to do everything in our power to stay fit and look good!

    This was fun :)

    1. For what are you "getting in shape?"  I was always thin partly because I always played sports throughout grade school and college.  During college, I gained about 35 lbs (I still played sports, but I ate very unhealthy foods and drank a lot of beer).  When the lbs didn't just fall off after graduation, I decided that I needed to start working out.  I lost most of the weight I had gained, so I'm pretty much working out just to stay in shape at this point.
    2. Favorite exercise?I don't think I have one particular favorite exercise, but I love Insanity's "Pure Cardio" workout.
    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods? I love veggies.  Any veggies.  And you can never go wrong with chicken (I usually bake or grill it).
    4. Favorite work-out clothing item? I love my Puma sneakers.  They are the best sneakers I've ever worn - so comfortable and lightweight.  I'm bummed because they're getting very worn out and I can't find that same sneaker anywhere.
    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!) Just to stay in shape and stick to my workout routine.
    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat? I try to stay away from fried foods, fast foods, and sodas.  Doesn't always work though.
    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge? I don't go to the gym anymore.  When I did go to the gym, I didn't judge anyone because I wouldn't want someone judging me.
    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?Brazil Butt Lift.  I bought it, but haven't started it yet.  Planning on starting next week.
    9. What is your food weakness? Ice cream and french fries.
    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness? I don't understand how I bust my butt working out regularly, take a week off because I'm super busy, and then check my measurements to find that I gained an inch on my waist and hips.  How could I possibly gain an inch after taking off for just one week?  I'm fine with the inch - I just don't understand it.
ETA: I also wanted to add a pet peeve of mine.  I've always been thin - I don't think I've ever been more than a size 6.  I HATE that people judge me because of this.  If I say I'm going to work out, people often ask me why.  People have also asked me if I eat.  Like I mentioned earlier, I've always played sports and I've been active with regular workouts since I graduated from college 10 years ago.  I do it because I want to stay in shape and be healthy.  And I eat.  I just choose to eat normal sized portions of healthy foods.  It really frustrates me that people think I remain the size that I am by sitting on the couch 24/7 and gorging myself with Big Macs and fries.

  • Kendall:

I hate chocolate too!   Often people tell me it's that I haven't had "Good Chocolate" and then they buy my really expensive Swiss or German Chocolate but it's even worse!

Haha.  At least I know I am not the only one out there!
Here are my answers as I want to join in and be part of the group

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?

Because I got a really good deal on a dress that's slightly too small!  Which I know is a Huge no-no, but I loved the dress.   Oh and also to be healthly and not die and stuff.

    2. Favorite exercise?

Running intervals on the treadmill.   The changes in speed keep me from getting bored.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
I love spinach.   I make "burger" patties with spinach, breadcrumbs and egg and I freeze them so I will always have a quick and easy snack or meal

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
I don't really have any favourites (yes I am Canadian and I am adding a U to that word, Deal with it!) I usuallly just work out in old clothes or hand me downs.   I am not working right now so there isn't any money in the workout clothes budget.   If I had a budget I would get some of those awesome yoga pants that make everyone's bum look so good!

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
My goal is to lose a pound a week until the wedding.   So far it's been over a month since I started and I haven't lost anything yet, which is disappointing and makes it hard to stay focused but for the first time I have a goal, to look good for my wedding which is helping to convince me to workout everyday.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?

I am so picky!   I also have some food issues which makes things harder. I have a few random allergies and I can't eat any pork or I get very ill.
I am trying to push myself to try new things, and  I have discoverd that there are many foods I like that I didn't think I would, but old habits die hard!

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?

I don't like going to the gym at all.  It's all those people who go there to judge!

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?

I hear Kettlebellls are good.  One of my BM's is a personal trainer and she keeps saying one day she is going to show up at my house and make me do them.  Hopefully it will be fun.

    9. What is your food weakness?

This list is almost as long as things I won't eat!    The condensed version is things that are salty and things that are sweet.  Also diet coke.   I could drink diet coke until the cows come home and since I live in the city, it's going to be a very long time until the cows come home!

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
Everything!   One person says do this, the next person says do that, then a third person says don't do either of those things, they are just a scam and will make you fat forever, do this!

My plan is to watch my calories, up my exercise and enjoy things in moderation.

    Wish me luck!

  • 1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?
General health, but obviously also for the wedding. I have an autoimmune disease that affects my joints, so the less I weigh the better off my joints are. I'd like to be able to walk properly in 20 years and staying in shape is how I'm going to get there.

    2. Favorite exercise?
I love the elliptical. I always feel like I've gotten a good workout in and the calorie burn is pretty rewarding.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?
I'm in love with spinach salads right now. I also like yogurt for breakfast and try to eat veggies (broccoli or asparagus usually) every day.

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?
    Yoga pants.

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)
Goal for right now is to lose another 25 lbs before my wedding on 9/1, overall my goal is to lose another 55 lbs and/or 3 pant sizes.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat?
Most beans. I know they are so healthy, but the thought of something like refried beans is disgusting to me. I'm trying so hard to incorporate some beans into my diet but I don't like black beans so it's hard.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?
Scantily clad anyone who is not wearing supportive enough clothing for the exercise they're doing (example: woman on treadmill running without a sports bra on). It just seems silly to me and going to the gym is not a fashion show.

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?
Zumba! Everyone talks it up so much and I see the class going on at my gym at least once a week, I'm just intimidated to jump in because I don't know what I'm doing.

    9. What is your food weakness?
Sweets of any kind. Usually ice cream, though lately it's been cookies (evil girl scouts!)

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?
I feel pretty well informed, but usually frustrated due to having binge eating disorder. I hate that when I do have a binge (much less frequent now), I know exactly how poorly I'm treating my body and I can't stop myself.

  • Kendall- We're all on our different fitness paths. When people ask me why I bust my butt so much at the gym because I'm already fit, I tell them it's because
    1. I want to be healthy for life.. and part of being healthy isn't beign skinny but being fit.  (that usually shuts them up if it doesn't...)
    2. Because I will outrun you when the zombie apocolypse comes.

rlav- how come you haven't tried Bikram yet? Are there no places in your area? It's pretty intense but if you're a yoga-goer already it's much easier.

entropic- As far as the legumes go, have you ever tried mashing the small (white) lima beans? I know it sounds a little crazy, but they are so squishy if you boil them down enough that you can mash them with out any milk/butter and add in garlic/onion/basil/whathaveyou. it's an amazing alternative to mashed potatoes and doesn't taste "bean like" (IMO).. might be worth giving a try :)

  • firsttimersluck - Are those the little white beans I see in soups somtimes? There is that campbell's kettle something soup with white beans and chicken...I actually don't mind that! So if those are the beans I would definitely consider mashing them up (I looove mashed potatoes!)

  • I'de have to look it up but could be! They don't have a ton of taste so they are great for picky eaters because they can just take the taste of whatever you add to it (similar to quinoa and lentils in that way)
I'm a big fan, since I am a big fan of mashed potatoes.. or.. any potato :) Not that potatoes are bad for you, but usually the stuff you have to add to them to make them all mashed and yummy.. is.. uh.. bad for you. lol

I have no time! I don't even have enough time to go to the gym or workout really. I was doing yoga regularly, but have since stopped. I definitely would need to get back on that horse before I attempted Bikram. I know it's intense. <div>
</div><div>For those who wanted to try Zumba, do it! I did for 6 months & lost 20 lbs. It was great. My friend is an instructor and she is super high energy. Lots of fun songs & great moves. I have since learned that not all instructors are as good. You may need to shop around. Doing it live is 100x better than the DVDs, IMO. The interaction and energy keeps you going.</div>
  • A little late to this game but I've loved reading everyone's responses!!

I noticed that a few of you mentioned that you'd like to start using kettlebells.  Try Jillian's Shred It With Weights.  It's a great kettlebell workout!

  • It's not Tuesday anymore, but I love this thread & thought I would respond.  I'm a new poster and am so glad to have found this board!

    1. For what are you "getting in shape" ?  While my wedding (7/3) is what's motivating me, I'm really interested in getting in shape for life.  I was super atheltic growing up, but spent most of my 20s establishing my career & not focusing on my health.  Now that I'm in my (early) 30s, I want to change that and feel & look great!

    2. Favorite exercise?  I have to say it is a tie between spinning and lifting.  I've gone through other phases (zumba, Barre Amped, bodysculpting) but spinning & lifting seem to be the activities that motivate me most.

    3. Favorite healthful (or go-to) foods?  Bananas and protein shakes

    4. Favorite work-out clothing item?  Shoes!  I took the time to get fitted for cross-trainers at a running shoe store, and I'm glad I did.  I used to suffer from terrible shin splints doing zumba, and my new shoes have really helped with that.  Investing in shoes for spinning has also been a good idea, as I can really feel a difference in my ride.

    5. What are your goals at this point in time? Overall? (if different, give both!)  I saw another bride say this and I could relate - to have to take my dress in as much as possible!  That's my short term goal - to keep losing inches for the big day and to feel confident that I'll like the way I look in photos.  Long term, my goal is to be healthy - keeping fit and eating healthy.

    6. Is there anything you refuse you eat? Anything with mayo.

    7. When you go to the gym, is there anything you judge?  Bad or out of shape instructors.  I know that sounds mean but if you're teaching me how to do something, or motivating me to keep going, it helps to see that you also are in decent shape, using good form, etc.

    8. Is there any class/exercise that you are wanting to try but just haven't?  Not really, I've tried a lot in the last year.  I started experimenting with Groupons & Living Socials, until I found what I liked.  Then I found a gym I liked, which offered great classes.

    9. What is your food weakness? Cheese.  And Beer.  Together.  Or separate.  I love cheese and beer.  I pretty much had to break up with both of them because the term "moderation" flies out the window, especially with cheese.

    10. Is there anything that confuses you about health/fitness?  I think just staying focused on what works for me helps me avoid getting confused.  There are so many theories, experts, opinions that exist and all are different.  I lean on one of my very good friends for advice and tips and can see that it's worked for her & is working for me.  I try not to get too distracted by other things.

Thank you for everyone's great advice on this board!

    Laura
