Oh, my god.  Who let my mother into this thread?!

BTW, I totally wish that people would call me Smokey in real life.  I would finally have a cool nickname.  But it's either Red or Hammie.  Or the occasional Ham Sandwich from my coworker.

Edit:  my old personal trainer used to call me Pork Chop.

  • I thought about changing my name around that age. My parents were ok with it. I was a Jennifer. In the 80s. 20% of girls my age had the same name as me.

Didn't go through with it. Ultimately both me and my parents were more lazy than annoyed by the annoyances of my common name.

I wanted to change mine to Kristy for the same reason!  Well, that and I strongly disliked my name because of the spelling for a while.  It's a common name with an uncommon spelling.  No keychains for me, either :(

I was never serious enough about to to tell my parents.  I wouldn't have had the heart anyway.  All my life they told me about how my dad picked the name because "he wanted the beauty of my name to match me."

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

I also loved the name Stacey when I was that age. And I still like the name Mallory. And my brother was going to be named Jessie if he was a girl.

  • Smokie, what is the real name you have that lends itself to the nicknames Hammie and Red? I'm confused!
  • 1. yes, I'm not a fan of my first name. I seriously considered going by my middle name (which I LOVE) when I got to college. I realize that's not legally changing the name, but I did consider it.
    2. because even though the parent picked the name, it may not actually fit the kid? I dunno. every situation is different.

    Sun-if you are still here:

The Smokey nickname came from an ex who called me that based on a character from the movie Friday.  He knew every line in that move and would do them constantly.  As such, he ended up calling me Smokey a lot.  Plus I have a great cat named Smokey.

As for Ham-my last name has a little Ham in it so I have been called Hammie and Ham Sandwich.

Red comes from my hair, of course.

None of the names has anything to do with my first name which is boring:  Karen.

  • Being the only Janis growing up, I wanted to be a Jessica or a Jennifer -- something NORMAL. I hated my name as a kid. Everyone in my family has a J name and the three of us kids are not named after anyone in the family. My dad swears I'm named after Janis Joplin, but my mom says they just got the spelling from her.

The only place I could find premade personalized items with my spelling on it was at a Christian bookstore -- just a name card. Never could find keychains with my spelling.

My mom's father thought my name was Janet up until he died.

I never go by Jan (nothing against the name, it's just not me), but my family and close friends call me Jano.

  • I wanted to change my name for most of my life.  My mother chose to spell my first and middle in the less popular ways.  So they got spelled wrong, a lot.  Add to that no one could pronounce OR spell my last name (and I NEVER had anything personalized like all of the other girls) and you get an unhappy kid.

It took my grade school 8 years to spell my first name right.  I wanted to legally change the spelling, at least.  3 years ago mom tells me that maybe I should have.  It would have been a lot less work to always correct it.

FI's BSC ex changed her name during the divorce.  Not just her last name.  She went from a normal everyday name to a name she got from Buffy the Vampire Slayer... but SWEARS it's not where it came from.  Her parents REFUSE to address her by the new name.
Haha, when we were in 8th grade my friend Amy started spelling it "Aimee" on papers because she thought it was more exotic or mature or something.  It only lasted a few months, though!
    Posted by kate51485
Uh that's totally funny, cause I totally did that. I started spelling my name Aimee for about 9 months in 6th grade...but at first I was a tard because I spelt it Amiee for about 3 weeks before I noticed it didnt make sense...(not that it wasnt stupid altogether)

My friend legally changed his name at 15 from Jason to Jaycen but it's because his friend Jaycen died and he wanted to honor him. Parents didnt get it, but they signed off on the whole thing. They still sign Christmas cards TO: Jason.
