WDYT?

Thoughts on going into the city the day of the wedding to get my hair done?I've been having a hard time finding someone to do my hair in central jersey so i've been thinking I should just go into the city the day of to get my hair done at my regular salon. We would drive up to the city after the RD, spend the night in a hotel, get our hair & makup done and be home in NJ by 11:00 and the ceremony starts at 3:30. Does that sound like to much running around the morning of? And is that too early to be done with hair & makeup?

eh, I would be nervous about being in the city and dealing with potential traffic personally.

I wanna say yes, it will be too much.  BUT if you really can't find anyone that you're happy with for your hair, then I would probably do it. What about your normal stylist?

Im tossed on this to be honest. I would def want my  hair to look the best, but then again I would be worried there wouldnt be enough time and GOD forbid you hit traffic. You would be a nervous stressed werck!

It sounds doable since you'll be spending the night before in NYC but I'm the type that get nervous. How far is your salon from the tunnel? (Is that the way you are getting out of the city?)

i think it's too much to worry about.  stick local, or have them come to you.

They are my normal stylist :/
  • edited December 2011
Have you talked to them about coming to you that day?

ahh i see.  I'm assuming you already found out they can't come to you day of.  Can you ask them if they can refer you to another stylist just for the day of your wedding?  They would HAVE to understand that you can't be doing all that traveling the day of.  If you ask them that, they may be willing to just come to you.

That sounds really hectic to me.  And it may not leave you enough extra time if you forgot something or have any type of emergency to address the morning of.Also, getting back to NJ by 11 may require a really early morning, depending on how many attendants you have.

Seabass, I have a guy in Edgewater. E-mail me if you want his info -- he came to me in Warwick, NY for my wedding but also works for salons in edgewater, NYC and Hoboken.Knottie name at hotmail

Yeah that's what I originally wanted to do but the girl that actually does my hair doesn't have a car and my parents’ house is not really accessible by public transportation. And she didn't really jump at the oppotunity when I told her how long, and how she would have to get there :/

Linz ~ Do you know if they happen to do all types of hair? I've contacted a couple of salons that didn't even want to think about doing my hair.

no, dont! what if something happens.

I'm assuming you go to a salon that specializes in black women's hair?  If so, i could ask a bunch of my friends where they have gone in NJ for wedding hair.  I'll see if I can get in touch with anyone now but it may be tough because of work...

    1) you could pay for a black car service to take her to/from (def cheaper and less stressful than a hotel and having such an early morning)2) if this would make you happy then it may be fun for everyone, but it will be an EARLY morning depending on how many people need to get their hair done

It sounds good on paper, but there are so many things that could happen.  I think it would just end up stressing you out.

Could you pay for her to rent a car?  Our photographer and videographer both came out from the city, and their "travel fees" were the expenses for them to rent cars to drive out (as well as gas, tolls, etc... they sent the info regarding total expense to us after the wedding when they knew what it was, and we reimbursed them).  Maybe she'd do it that way?

Thanks dana, that would be great! I'm going there tomorrow so I will ask if she's OK with us having a car pick her up and bringing her to NJ. I have a feeling her main concern is that there is only 3 of us. And if she's coming to us then it would be much later in the day. So she would pretty much be missing out on entire days worth of pay/tips between the traveling & actually doing our hair. But I'm keeping my fingers crossed that she's OK with that option.

Oh you're right near where I work in Bridgewater.  Knowing this area, I would either recommend going forward with your plan or have them come to Jersey.  It doesn't sound so bad staying in the city & coming back early as long as you're on schedule and be back at 11am.

I say Go For It!  You should be fine with traffic... plus it will be fun to stay over in the city the night before with your bridal party!  I would just reconfirm times with your salon and ensure they will have you done on time!

I wouldn't risk it. My regular stylist is also in the city, but I'm having someone else come to my house. You never know If you really want her, I like Einat's idea #1. It's probably cheaper than a hotel room.

There is a woman in Queens that supposedly will travel to you the day of, but you'd have to call and ask.  Her name is Merida Bourjolly - number 718-926-5905.  Tell her Vashone sent you (who is my really good friend)  she doesn't get anything out of it, but just so the lady knows who you are.

I don't think it sounds like that much of a hassle. Are you getting married on a Saturday? If so, getting out of the city at 11am should be no problem at all, right? I would go for it if you know you'll feel beautiful for the rest of the day.

I wouldnt do it but not because of the timing. I would like my hair and make up people to be there when I am putting my dress on right before pics for last minute touch ups so having them at the hotel is really important to me.  Also if you are doing a veil it may be annoying to have her put it on and have to wear it all day. I would offer to drive her out if you cant find anyone else. She can be back in the city by 2:30 and have a relatively full afternoon of appointments. If it is in your budget and important to you money usually entices people to do things they ordinarily would not......

Thanks dana! if things don't work out tomorrow I'll def give her a call.

"Are you getting married on a Saturday? If so, getting out of the city at 11am should be no problem at all, right?"As someone who lives in and flees the city on Saturday -- by car and usually around 11 am -- on a fairly regular basis, it REALLY depends.  Particularly if there is something stupid like a street fair or a race or a parade anywhere near your escape route.  Some days it is a breeze, some days it is a nightmare -- and I've always lived very close to a way out.
