Should I change the neckline on my dress?

I finally found the wedding gown! I absolutely LOVE it and even got it on sale so I am very happy with it :)

I've been playing with the idea of changing the neckline from the halter to strapless however....what do you ladies think? My mother is a seamstress, so she assures me it can be done and it wouldn't cost me anything to do it obviously....but I can't decide one way or the other!

I'm having a winter wedding, though I'll have a shall/wrap for when we are outdoors, so I'm not worried about the warmth factor.

Re: Should I change the neckline on my dress?

  • Beautiful gown!!  Love the sparkle!  Just curious, what is your reason for wanting to change the neckline?
  • Did you try on strapless dresses? If so, which looked better on you ... strapless or halter? If not, go try some on ASAP and then decide from there.

What happens if the dress somehow loses its integrity once your mother changes it to strapless? Can it be fixed? Do you have a backup plan?

The warmth factor shouldn't matter ... a halter isn't going to keep you any warmer than strapless would.

Thank you! I love the sparkle as well!

As for my reasons for wanting to change it, I have tried on strapless gowns, and they look better on me (in my opinion). My upper body is more petite and I feel as if the straps of the halter are overpowering because of their width.

The halter doesnt look bad, per say, and the few women who have seen it agree with me, but say it would look beautiful either way. So I'm just looking for more impartial responses from you lovely ladies!

Oh, and In terms of the integrity of the gown being compromised by altering the neckline, I am honestly not worried about it. My mother has been doing this exact thing for nearly 30 years now. If she says it can be done, and done well, then I trust her.
  • If you feel that stapless is truly more flattering on you, then perhaps changing it would be a good idea.  Being petite up top as well I know what you mean about how sometimes dresses with straps add an odd bulkiness.  And I'm sure your mom isn't going to steer you wrong.

My dress was originally a halter, but I changed it to a sweetheart strapless and I cannot imagine a more perfect gown for me (PIB)! I'm sure your mom is a fabulous seamstress and would do an amazing job chopping off the halter, but I would advise you to order it custom, if possible. For my Casablanca dress, this was a $150 upcharge, which is less than I would have paid a seamstress. I know that you wouldn't have to pay your mom, I'm just giving you a point of comparison. When the designer changed the neckline for me, they also adjusted the beading design of the neckline to make it more complete. Also, depending on how the halter is designed, the lowest point in the middle (the point of the v for lack of better description) could be lower than you would really want for a strapless. It does really depend on how the dress is designed, so I'm just speaking off experience for what worked for my specific dress.

As for halter vs. strapless, I am also petite and the strapless does wonders for me. The halter straps were too overwhelming around my face and I appear much taller without them.

  • jessNlane52804- thank you for the response, that is a good point about the bottom of the 'v'. I've already ordered the gown, but I could call and see if it is still possible to make a few changes....thank you!
  • Gorgeous dress.  I think it can be done, but just make sure that there's some additional support like boning around the V if you find that it is too low.  There are low V sweetheart strapless gowns, but they always have the proper amount of boning so that the bride isn't pulling her dress up all night.  My gown as ruching that was fitted a little tighter at the strapless sweetheart neckline with additional boning.  It lays perfectly flat and makes the girls look sexy without to revealing.
  • I don't have anything useful to add to the discussion, I think you should go with whatever you feel looks best on you.

I LOVE the dress though - would you mind sharing who makes it and a model number? I'm a winter bride as well and I've been looking for a halter with the icy sparkle that this one has. A price range would be great too, but I understand if you'd rather not share. :)
