Coworker harassment about weight loss -- vent

I've been working out every single day, and I feel fantastic, but I'm pretty irritated with work right now.  I didn't go around flaunting my desire to lose weight, or the effects of it, but I did mention to my boss the other day that I'm trying to lose weight (after he offered me the Halloween candy that was leftover).  Ever since then, one of my male coworkers has constantly been harassing me every time he sees me put something in my mouth.  Even if it IS low-fat, low-calorie.  He scrutinizes everything I eat and comments on it.This morning, someone brought fresh coffee cake to the office to share.  I checked the calorie count and cut myself a half of one serving, for breakfast.  Coworker immediately started harassing me and has continued to do so for the past half hour.  ARGH.  I am seriously irritated, but if I confront him, he only goes around for the rest of the day telling everyone I have my panties in a twist.  Irritating!

  • Not to be a buzzkill but i hope you ate something other than just that coffee cake for breakfast, it will not sustain you and you will just be hungry in an hour.
  • I've got someone at work who's sort of like that, but not as aggressive.  He was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago and has since become very strict about what he eats and always comments about sodium content and other things that I'm not always as concerned about. You kind of just have to let it go.  Or be firm and tell him to STFU.  You just can't let it bother you.And ditto Nebb on eating more/better for breaky.  You need to fuel yourself in the morning!

  • Wow what a d*ck!!!I do not know how you control yourself in that situation I would be furious. He probably has nothing better to do than pick on someone just to get a laugh out of his other co-workers. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a cocky man too. Make sure you dont let him see that this makes you irritated and angry because he is probably just feeding off of your emotions now. Just say next time "atleast I am doing something healthy for myself what can you say about your habits?"

  • For the record my mother does that to me all the time - if she catches me eating chocolate or something she comments. The other night I popped open a halloween box of junior mints (that contained FIVE!) and she started sniping that she didnt understand why i undermined my workout by eating "that crap". The trick is mastering the "do you really want to go there?" look.
  • I would confront him and if he doesn't stop I would go to your boss. Obviously this guy has a bullying complex and that would fall under the harassment laws.
  • If you have told him that his comments bother you and he continues I would go to your supervisor. Harrassment in the work place is illegal no matter what it is about. If you have told him to stop and his behavior continues you need to bring it to someone's attention.
  • Thanks, everyone...I did eat more than that for breakfast, and I feel great.  The trick is mastering the "do you really want to go there?" look. Ha ha, Nebb...I totally need to do this.

  • I get this too. I bought a block of chocolate to work because I wanted a couple of pieces and I knew if I shared it with everyone we could all have a couple. My manager saw and said "oh so is this how dieting works?" Ummmm yeah staying inside my calorie limit and having 4 pieces of dark chocolate to cure my sweet tooth is how it works. But thanks for asking!Advice wise I would just tell him that dieting means eating well and eating regularly. You aren't trying to look like Kate Moss, so you will still be sticking things in you gob occasionally.
  • I'd go to HR and submit a formal complaint of harassment. This guy should lose his job for that. It is NONE of his business.

  • I think part of it is the fact that a lot of people dont know how eating healthy "works". They think if you are dieting, you only eat "diet" food and nothing indulgent like chocolate or a small piece of cake. In reality, having small indulgences and being aware of your points/calories is a prefectly healthy way to lose weight because you arent depriving yourself.
  • Ugh work place politics...for about 2 weeks my weight loss was a source of conversation around the office -- one woman told me "not to go overboard" with my weight loss. I would go to HR in this case -- he can not & should not scrutinize what you eat.

  • I would have already called HR on him.I have a bad acid reflux issue that causes me to cough alot after eating... especially after eating certain types of food. This guy asked and I told him it was GERD. Now he CONSTANTLY teases me about it. Next time he does I am going to ask him to stop. If he does not? Ill have HR talk to him. Tired of it! people are obnoxious.
