Someone Else Wearing a Veil To the Wedding?!?

I just recently found out that my fiancé's aunt wants to wear a mantilla veil to our wedding (she also suggested I use her two granddaughters I have NEVER met as my bridesmaids). She's from Spain, but from what I've seen this isn't a Spanish tradition unless you're the bride. What do you guys think? I'm trying not to freak out, but so far that's not working...

Is it a Catholic ceremony/mass? Then yes, it is traditional to wear a mantilla on ones head.

It is Catholic, but from what I've been told since Vatican II it's not normal...

But if it's not white, it especially doesn't make a difference, I'd think. Unless his aunt is Penelope Cruz. Then you're screwed.

There a few older women at my church who wear small mantillas over their heads every Sunday. Even if she does wear one, it's not going to compare to your big white wedding dress and long tulle veil. You'll be fine, I promise!

Thanks girls! I think I'm just freaking out after her wanting me to use her granddaughters, and then this mantilla thing- I 'm not sure on the color but I know she was talking about wearing some elegant gown too. Part of me thinks if she does wear it people will just be like, "Ooohhh it's the crazy aunt from Spain..." and leave it at that.

I wear a chapel veil if I am in a Catholic church. Always. Without fail.Most women at much church do this, as well, so I wouldn't say it's "not normal." I'd say "not typical."I also attend Latin Mass weekly, though. The veiling rule was never removed, only ignored.For FI's cousin's wedding, though, I think I'm going to wear some kind of a scarf type head covering, or else a cute hat (but not one that blocks view) because the rule is actually headcovering, not veil.

Depending on how old his aunt is and how religious she is this is probably a tradition for her. I wouldn't worry about her stealing your thunder. You do not have to use her grand daughters in your ceremony. You don't even know them...

She's probably just old school. We're very lax in the US about what flies in a Catholic church. When I was in Italy, they would refuse to admit you without your shoulders and knees covered.

ditto others, if its catholic, veils are often worn, particularly by old school catholics or catholics who attend the latin.

I went to a Catholic wedding recently that had a Latin mass, and everyone either brought their own veil or was given one at the door. It's actually just a hankerchief-size piece of lace sort of draped over the woman's head or pinned. It won't come anywhere close to looking like a bridal veil, don't worry.
