Randomness Poll - Did You Know???

Ok, so DH told me something I didn't know today, and I thought it was way cool - cool/random enough to share here. Also, since so many people in J&K's earlier thread said they were good at trivia, I figured lots of people would either know facts like this (or be able to find some...)Did You Know....that the reason you get that funny feeling in your mouth when you bite down on tinfoil (if you have fillings) is that you're making a tiny battery?According to DH, the unlike metals (tin and the amalgam) combined with your saliva, which acts like an acid, create a tiny battery, and the uncomfortable tingly thing is actually a little shock. And - go.

  • Interesting, but I'm not sure why I would bite on tinfoil.  lol
  • Christopher Columbus and George Washington died of syphillis.
  • Navy, I could actually see someone biting or licking tin foil if part of their food was stuck to it. You know, like when you go get a cheeseburger from a fast food joint and the cheese is stuck to the paper?

  • That feeling happens sometimes when I put a fork or spoon in my mouth. Is that the same reason?

  • I'm going to have to get FI to try that. I don't know that it would work with my kind of fillings. I don't have any awesome random information to share. :-\

  • Oh I remembered one! There is a rumor that in The Wizard of Oz, you can see someone hanging in the background.  Supposedly, a guy was fired and, being a mental case, he hung himself and it wasn't caught until after filming. However, this isn't true.  It's actually a shadow cast from animals that were backstage while it was being filmed.

  • You don't have to answer all of the questions correctly to get a perfect score on the SAT.
  • Trust me; it's only happened to me by accident (stuck to a piece of gum or like you said, stuck on a burger, etc).  It's awful.  When he told me that (I was ... um, biting a piece of Twix off the wrapper and bemoaning the feeling that was going to happen), my skin crawled thinking about it.And, FWIW, the Twix is wrapped in like mylar. So I bit away.  It doesn't work on the resin-type fillings, just the silver-colored ones you'd probably have in your molars.  And yes, it would happen with silverware, too - different metals.  It's also why you can make a battery out of a potato, etc.  I was pretty impressed by DH's smarts today!I think I heard somewhere that they are continually repainting the Golden Gate bridge because of how long it takes.

  • The song "It's a Small World" plays 11 million times a year in the ride. I also know that the ride was closed down for a while to renovate the boats because people were making them too heavy. How sad is that?!

  • When President James Madison was dying his physician wanted to pump him with drugs so that so that he would die on July 4th. He told him to shove it and passed away about a week early.
  • Here's a false "did you know"When working in archaeology my boss once bet me that I couldn't make tourists believe an unbelievably fake story I concocted while moving too much dirt in too much heat. By the end of the day I had a group of 20 tourists leaving our dig site talking about how none of them realized that James Madison had a twin brother who was locked up in the cellar of the house his entire life and was killed with a metal stake through the heart (fear of him being a vampire you know).

  • When interviewing a person who claims to have MPD (Multiple Personality Disorder) the Phsychiatrist will pull a chair slightly away from the table on the left of the patient and if the person is telling the truth when they get up to leave they will walk around the chair rather than in between the chair and the table for fear of someone actually sitting there.
  • Someone who has amnesia and can't form new memories can still be trained to avoid certain objects. They did a study where they had a few metal objects on a table.  One of them gave a small electrical shock when touched.  When the subject was called into the room day after day, they claimed to not remember the test, but avoided touching the one that gave the shock.(this is from DH...it's part of what he studies)

  • sucrets, that reminds me of a study I read about/ saw video of in college where they had infants of certain ages/stages of development crawling over plexiglass which was over optical illusions.  The ones that made it look like the floor dropped away freaked the infants at a certain stage out, and they would hesitate, then begin crying and refuse to crawl over it. At an earlier stage, no problem-o. It was fascinating.  Human developmental stages are fascinating.
