All the people I know who said they were going to try NFP ended up pregnant. Maybe that's because the ones who make it work stay silent, I dunno. Even read a story on another board of a Catholic girl and her FI who really looked into it, studied the whole premise, were all for it- and got pregnant on their honeymoon. Opps.

Koopa - We are doing a SUPREMELY small wedding that is pretty much like a glorified elopement. I didn't want to make a big deal out of any of it and just wanted to go away. Some people are coming to watch and we will have little reception for them. What kills me is that FI's DAD won't come. He won't fly. We have tried everything and he come because he is petrified of airplanes. It kind of sucks.

Ahhh god that just hurts to hear. Before this thing with FI's dad I probably would have made some flippant comment about it, but it's such a serious phobia that I don't even know what to say about it anymore. How long would you guys have to be out of the country?

Oh ugh, that sucks about his dad. My fi grew up pretty close to his grandparents so he pretty much said in the beginning that if they couldn't be there b/c of a plane ride or money or something, he didn't want to do it. Fair enough. My grandparents suck so I didn't have the same sentiment, haha.

3 or 4 years - likely in Japan, Germany, England or Italy. Once it was time for us to come back, he'd get to list his preferences for stateside bases and the likelihood of getting a base you want to be at is higher.We've apparently decided we're going to have a kid (we actually thought we WERE having one for the last month - heh, false yet very realistic alarm), so I think I'll lure my parents into getting passports by dangling a grandchild.I don't even have a passport.We're not a travely people.

Night_Sprite - Actually, no, which in a way makes it worse. That is, we did not get along AT ALL during my teen years ( I wasn't diagnosed with my disorder until late teens, thus didn't start getting help until then, and life was very, VERY hard on my parents). He and I even went through phases where we didn't talk at all.Now that I'm an adult and have lived away from home for 7 or 8 years, we actually get along quite well on a more adult level. My sister didn't get along with him either, now they hang out all the time at their favorite bar, and I'm pretty much missing out on a more adult relationship with my parents by being literally the ONLY MEMBER of my family, on both sides (aunts, uncles, cousins - everyone) who lives outside the north eastern PA area. If I leave the country for 4 years, we will probably end up more distant than we already are.

We aren't either. FI has never lived outside Maryland. Neither of us had passports until now with the wedding coming up. Haha grandchildbait. That's what I'm going to have to use on my mother. That is such a long time overseas, but hey at least it's a great experience.

pink - NFP as it used to be is a guessing game. Your cycle can change from month to month depending on stress, illness, etc.The only way to avoid getting pg is to avoid having sex when you're fertile (only a few days each cycle). And the only way to know that is if you temp and chart.

salt - If we end up on a base somewhere even remotely awesome, I have a feeling everyone we are related to and even vaguely know will suddenly be interested in visiting for the free lodging.Oh, no one is interested when I'm sweating through a 116 degree Arizona summer, but the possibility of a free bed in Japan comes up and suddenly eeeeeveryone's dying to catch up. I JUST KNOW IT.

I'm sorry about the distance. FI has a somewhat rocky relationship with his parents, too. It is hard to know what to say when you aren't the person in the situation. Even if your dad sucks at it, I'm sure he loves you.

Night Sprite - we are not what I would call a close family, compared to others. I mean, the idea of those people who tell their mothers everything? That's completely alien to me.The dynamic does seem to be changing as we get older though (we're 27, 26 and 19).

Plus our immediate families are both pretty small, so there wasn't a lot of people that we would have wanted to have at an intimate wedding. (No grandparents or anything either). It's just kind of how it worked out. I'm really thankful that everyone has been so laid back about all of it because I didn't want to have to plan anything huge.

Oh there has been one serious bummer about the distance.Since Phil and I can't afford to go home for Christmas (first Christmas I am EVER missing), my dress shopping plans got scrapped.And I have no one out here to go dress shopping with.So it looks like I am going to have to shop for my wedding dress alone.Which, for some reason, has pretty much struck me as the worst thing ever right now.
