Need opinions

I have two options right now for my reception, and I don't know which way to go. This is for 20 people- all immediate family (parents and siblings), in Las Vegas.- Hors d'ouerves and hosted bar for 2 hours- Full sit-down meal, pay for your own drinks It's going to be at 5 pm on a Sunday. I'd like to pay for people's drinks, but I also feel like that's dinner time and people will want a full meal. I can't do both, budget-wise ($2000 max). What would you rather have? I think if I did the apps/drinks, people still have time to go eat a full meal afterwards if they want- it would be over at 7 pm, which is early in Vegas.

I would go with the first option if they're the type to want to hit the town in Vegas. If they are older types who aren't really into drinking or partying, then I would go with option 2. I really think this choice depends on your guest list and you know them better than we do.

I love hors d'oeuvres receptions and hosting drinks as well is always the way to go. Definitely option 1.

I would go with option one. It's very similar to what we are doing. Our reception will be at five and we are having hors d'ouerves/buffet style--it will be filling enough, but still early enough that people can go have dinner afterward if necessary.

Are they big drinkers? I'd rather have the meal b/c I don't drink that much. Plus drinks in Vegas are free if you are gambling, right? So if they go out afterward, they'll still be able to drink.

At least 5 people will probably not drink at all. The apps are: Mini crab cakesmushroom risotto cakebacon wrapped scallopslobster spring rollscharred beef on garlic croutonassorted bruschettaThere would also be cake.

Ok, I'm pretty sure I'm leaning towards number 1. I hate to be a party pooper and make people pay for their own drinks (although my family has said they're fine with that).

I think that food sounds delicious and filling! I also don't think it matters some people will not drink at all. It is really about offering everything as a hostess so that your guests do not have to open their wallet. Perhaps you can ask them if they have an option to have the open bar but pay solely based on the alcohol that is actually consumed to alleviate cost?

Meaghan- unfortunately, they don't. It's $$/person regardless of whether they're going to drink or not (even have to pay for the 19 year old- boo).

I would prefer #1. More opportunity to mingle and visit with people. Especially w/ immediate family.

Well if it's going to be enough food then go with option 1. I would be more likely to biitch about someone not serving enough food than biitch about a cash bar. Please serve more than 3-5 pieces a person.

scoetto, I see your point, but since it is only immediate family, they might not have the seafood issues, KWIM? For my family, that would be a fabulous mix.

scoetto- I don't think anyone has seafood issues, but that's the set menu- there aren't options to change things on it.

Option #1 sounds awesome. That's similar to what my cousin did at her RD (she had several passed apps before dinner) and I was full by the time dinner started.
