David's Bridal

I need people's opinion on David's Bridal. I have heard a lot of negative stuff about service, them not ordering the dress, etc.  I had my first wedding dress appointment yesterday (yay!) with them and the woman helping me was great and I found a dress that could definitely be the one and it is on sale.  But given what I've heard, I'm afraid to consider it? What has everyone else hear?  TIA.

Re: David's Bridal

  • I had a great experience at DB. When I went back to order my dress, they remembered my name and were really helpful/friendly/nice.
  • I ordered my dress from David's Bridal and had a great experience. The dress was in a couple of months before they said it would be and everything has been smooth sailing. I'm not getting it altered there, so I don't have any feedback on their alterations.
  • I really think the stories I've heard about DB are 50/50.  Some people LOVE it.  Some people HATE it. If you liked your sales person, maybe find some reviews on your local store and see where you want to go from there. I bought my dress from a store with sucky service.  For me, once I bought the dress, I knew I didn't have to go back there for anything so I didn't care where the dress was from. GL and HTH!
  • Like cew, I won't be getting my alterations done there. I've heard they charge outrageously for alterations. So I wouldn't recommend them for that.
  • I had a great experience with them. Read a full review in my bio if you feel inclined. I do think that DB has more good experiences then bad ones. I read HORRIBLE reviews online, then when I started asking friends and family, everyone had the same review: "It was fine. It was a store. I got a wedding dress/bridal party dress."

  • I have no experience to speak of, as there are no DBs in Canada. But let me just say, they couldn't have become such a huge company if there weren't doing something right.

  • I HATED shopping there.  But if you went and didn't mind it, then go for it.  I just found it really pushy and impersonal, compared to smaller shops in my area.

  • I've always had great experiences with DB as a BM and as a bride. The thing to remember when you hear reviews is that DB is a national chain.  Every store has different staff and management, so just because one bride had a problem at her store, that doesn't mean that you will at yours.  I got my wedding dress and our BM dresses from DB.  I've also gotten other BM dresses at DB when I was in other weddings.  I've never had any issues with them at all.

  • I had a great experience with DB!!  The woman I had is AWESOME!  My mom and I went the first time, then the 2nd time I took 2 girlfriends, 1 of whom is getting married a few months after me. I'd made sure that we'd have the same woman. She was great with my friend too!  We both ordered our dresses a couple weeks later.

  • I think it varies store to store and with the consultants.  I had a great time with my original consultant, and when I went back for BM dresses, I found out she was no longer there and the new consultant wasn't very helpful.  I went to a completely different location for a FG dress, and the service was really bad. I think you just have to hope you'll get lucky.
  • I also had a good experience with DB...I went shopping in PA with my mom, found my dress, on sale off the rack.  I was flying back to Indiana, so they shipped the dress to me for free to my house!  I have only heard that they are expensive for alterations so I will be going to a local shop that a friend recommended.
  • I almost didn't go to David's Bridal because of the horror stories I have heard about it.  I ended up getting my gown from there and had a great experience. My only advice with DB is to be firm about the customer service...I had an appointment and they completely ignored me for twenty minutes until my MOH went up to the front desk and insisted on a salesperson.  ALSO, if you purchase a dress from there, when you go to pick it up, insist on trying it on before you leave with it even if they say they don't have a dressing room.  They tried to tell me I couldn't try it before I took it with me, and I refused and stayed until a room opened up.  Once you leave with that dress they're not responsible for damages, wrong sizes, etc., so be sure it fits and is pristine before you leave with it (just to let you know, mine was perfect when I tried it on in the store).Other than that, I had a really good experience overall.

  • David's Beidal is a chain and like any chain people have good and bad experiences. It sounds like you have had a wonderful one so I would go for it. You may want to try on at other places for peace of mind but it sounds like you found 'the one.' In my experience I found some of the dresses to be a little lower quality in terms of fabric and also I have heard bad news about alterations across the board so you may want to check out details your specific place.
  • Buy your dress there if you want, but look somewhere else for alterations.  I've had a great experience with DB personally and I'm getting a lot of my stuff from there.  I think it varies depending on the store.
  • I did not get my BM dresses there, but only b/c I wasn't happy with their version of pink. Otherwise, I would have. They made everything very easy for me and my salesperson was very personable and not pushy at all.
  • And when it comes to alterations, I will probably go ahead and have mine done there because my dress is extremely detailed, and I'm not sure that any local seamstresses around here would be able to handle it.  I feel more comfortable having my dress altered by the people that made it, if that makes sense. And our local seamstresses charge about the same.
  • My DB experiences were great. I didn't have any pushy sales people, in face they were all awesome. Everything was ordered in a timely manner and came in early in most cases. It was also helpful to use them for the BP dresses since I had one BM in MD, on in NY and one in SC- they all just went to their local stores and got what they needed. Getting an inexpensive DB dress also made me feel better about the fact that the bottom inch was covered in dirt and mud by the end of the night, too.
  • Well I went shopping in April for my wedding next March.  When I went back to show the dress to my mom they couldn't find my information because they entered the date as March 2009.  Alright, whatever people make mistakes.  I ended up getting another dress at a local salon. So I went back a few weeks ago to DB with my MOH to look at the bridesmaid dress again and yet again they couldn't find my information. We went searching for the dress and found out it had been discontinued! Now I don't know if they would have called me if they had my correct information but still... I was pissed.

  • Thanks Ladies!  That was a huge help.  I was thinking about having the alterations done elsewhere as the complaints I heard were usually about that.  I did get a bit overwhelmed at the additional costs of the underthings, veil, tiara, etc. Really adds up!
  • I had a perfectly fine shopping experience when I got my dress there.I think it depends on when you go. If I were you I'd try to get a weekday morning appointment.
  • I should note that I agree with pps about the alterations. I went with a local gal and saved a bundle! (not as much as switching to Geiko, but a bundle all the same)

  • I did get a bit overwhelmed at the additional costs of the underthings, veil, tiara, etc. Really adds upThere are plenty of other places to get these things.  For the undergarments, try some on w/ the dress and take the style number/size down, and then try places like ebay - much cheaper.I had a great experience w/ DB myself.  Most of the complaints I have heard had to do with either the sales people themselves or the alterations department.  I would try to find a local seamstress on your local board.

  • I only got my BM dresses through DB. I ordered 4 dresses. Two dresses fit my BMs perfectly, no problems there. We just had to wait for them to arrive. One came in the wrong size and had to be returned, but the problem was solved eventually. One was ordered from their size chart combined with the size opinion from the woman helping us. That dress was no where close to fitting my BM, and had to be sent back not once, but twice until we got a size that fit. Her dress was picked up the DAY BEFORE my wedding. We ordered the dresses 8 months before that.Take from that what you wish, but that was my experience.
  • I had a mixed experience. I got my dress and all BM dresses there. I loved them and they looked beautiful, and the price was great. I also liked that I had BMs in 4 different states and they all were able to order their dresses without having to fly to the same location. I had a great experience trying on dresses, but when mine was ordered, the wrong one came in - it was a totally different style. Luckily, this was 4-5 months before the wedding and the RIGHT dress was ordered and came in with PLENTY of time. So no biggie. The big issue I had with them was that my sister's dress was obviously a different shade than the rest of the BM dresses. She brought it into the store and they exchanged it, but looking at my pics i can tell in some lighting/angles that it was still a slightly different color. She also found a (small) hole in it the day of the wedding. My sisters say they will NOT be getting their wedding dresses from DB for those reasons - personally, I don't think I'd do anything different if I had to start over. I loved my dress and I think my BMs looked great. If you are really high maintenence and need things to be perfect or are not willing to work with the store if issues do arise, you may want to look elsewhere. If you can be flexible then you will be fine. In the end there wasn't anything that couldn't be fixed or that ruined the day by any means.

  • Good idea on shopping elsewhere on the underthings.  And the tiara.  I would like the crystals but I'm sure I could find a good deal if I shopped around.  Being strapped into all that stuff yesterday made me glad I wasn't born 100 years ago.  It was really toasty after awhile.
  • I had an awesome time with them and my dress came in MUCH earlier than they told me it would.
  • We had a good experience there - very friendly and helpful.  After the fact, they SUCKED because they sold my name, number and email address and I got contacted by multiple wedding-related vendors. That soured the experience.
  • They seem to have a few vendors that almost seem to be in house at their locations, so I pretty much expected to be on vendor lists. As it is, I went to one or two bridal shows, so I was on EVERYONE'S lists. They've stopped calling and have *mostly* stopped emailing now that I've been married for 7 months. It took quite a while even after the wedding, I was still getting emails from DJs and photogs.
  • As I had registered online I was getting called a lot and I mentioned that at my appointment so they made sure on all the paperwork it was noted I do not want to be contacted by any vendor.  Hopefully that sticks.
  • I got my dress from a DB that was 3 hours away from where I lived. I honestly don't have many complaints at all (there was one lady who was not my consultant but she kept butting in randomly and that annoyed everyone in my group). But over all it was a great experience. I think the biggest thing ladies complain about has to do with time. Here are a few tips on how to work things out smoother: -Call ahead. They will honor your appointment and make sure that there is someone who can be of service to you most if not all of the time. They do suggest that you pick a day not on the weekend because those happen to be the busiest days with walk-ins. -Give yourself PLENTY of time. This is a big decision! It's fun if you don't get too hyped about it and it's a great chance to feel absolutely beautiful even before your wedding day! Remember that there are also LOTS of options! So make sure you don't put a time-limit on yourself and the consultant that is unrealistic. I only tried on about 7 dresses but I was there for a good 3 hours because there's so much to consider and if you have friends and family (mothers too) everyone has an opinion. -Do your homework. Know what you like, check out dress ideas on theknot.com and know your preferences. Do you like mermaid? Ballgown? Aline? Do you want strapless? Halter? White? Ivory? You don't have to know exactly what dress you want, but it helps to narrow your search down before you get there to help save time. -Enjoy yourself! This is going to be a staple in one of the happiest days of your life! How you look is a big deal! The biggest thing that will make you a glowing bride is that you are happy with what dress you picked/hair/accessories/etc. If you're happy, that will show brighter than the dress! Because I live so far from DB, I am getting alterations done at a small town boutique but if you live close by to one, I haven't come across anyone who had awful service with that either. Have fun and good luck!
