I have an "informational interview" this morning with a partner at a CPA firm, so I need your positive thoughts and energy! My lawyer friend made this contact for me, knowing that I'm trying to get into the private sector, and the guy was willing to meet with me. Yay! I'm not a CPA but I'm looking for information about "the role of investigators in the private sector" and they have some divisions in their firm that could apply to my experience, or at least he'll surely have lots of info and contacts for me to consider.I have my list of questions to ask him, I have copies of my resume, I'm in a suit. I guess I'm ready!

good luck Dani! i'd also look into law firms. when i worked for lawyers, we used to use investigators all the time when we had questionable workers comp cases or auto injury cases. you'd be amazed at the people that said they were completely disabled, and then you'd see video of them weeding their gardens.

Thanks for the good vibes everyone! The meeting went really well and I know I made a good impression but he certainly gave me a lot to think about. Basically with my education and experience with financial investigations, he thinks no one would hire me because I have no accounting coursework and I'm not a CPA. He literally could think of no firms that would hire someone with my experience, which he acknowledged is great, without being a CPA or at least having a degree in accounting.I already for the government and am trying to see where my skills could be used outside the government. So I have some thinking to do!!

Is it something where you could take a few essential accounting courses at a local school and be good, or did he think you needed to go the whole 9 yards to become a CPA?

He said a typical CPA would hire me with a degree in accounting or with a CPA but probably not with anything less. The thing is that I don't know if I even want to be a CPA, but most of my experience is with financial investigations and according to him, in the private sector that requires accounting degree and CPA. Which is good to know from someone in the field, but also not what I wanted to hear.

Yeah no joke! I'm going to keep doing research. I'm a Certified Fraud Examiner so I'm going to do some research on their website and Linkedin and see what other CFEs do. I'll find something eventually. Thankfully I do have a job so it's not like I have to be in a hurry.
