How much is too much?

Re: How much is too much?

  • I know your heart ache!!! I'm on an extreme budget too...and I would have just a hard of time to stomach that kind of a financial blow, even though you've emotionally commited to your dream dress. Try to find a knock off designer/model of that dress. Look on eBay, try trunk sales, do anything you possibly can...but DO NOT pay full price. you'll hate yourself for it later. Good luck
  • Shop around some more, since you've got plenty of time. The first time I went to try on dresses, I found one that OMG, I just HAD to have. But then a couple months later I found "the one" that also happened to be a lot cheaper. And an inexpensive dress doesn't have to be a David's dress---you can find great prices at some boutiques. Also keep in mind that the $1500 price tag will go up with alterations and tax. And you still need shoes and a veil if you're wearing one. I would say with a $1500 price tag, budget $2000 for the whole shebang.
  • I would do what feels comfortable to you, but try typing your dress into google and see if anywhere has it cheaper.  If worse comes to worse and that is THE DRESS, then buy it, you can always sell it online after the wedding, there are quite a few websites that sell once used bridal gowns, then you aren't out as much money.  There is probably some other girl out there who is looking for that exact dress also.
  • I think that it would be too much.  However, my personal opinion is that while it may be the most important day of your life, it is still just one day and there is no way I could justify spending that much money. When I went dress shopping with my mom she picked out a $1200 dress that she was literally ready to buy for me.  It was crazy!  I felt so uncomfortable in it knowing how much it cost.  In the end I found something that I love way more for $560.In the end it's really up to you.  Good luck!

  • Mine was about 1400 which included the veil, any alterations, storage, and pressing.  I dont think 1500 is way out of the question...my sister spent like over 3000 on hers and so my parents were like THANK GOD with me!!  I think it just depends on your budget and what you're honestly willing to spend on that particular part of your wedding.  If I were in your shoes, I would maybe check out a few other stores and see what they have to offer, just to really do your research thoroughly, and if you keep coming back to "the dress" in your mind and in your heart, then I think you need to get it!!!  You can always skimp out on something else that's less important to you like DJ, video, etc.  It is SUCH a special day and I honestly believe that the dress is one of the most important things (aside from marrying your guy!!) that you'll remember and look back on years from now.  If you feel great and confident in what you're wearing, it's going to show in your pictures, video, etc.
  • ok, so I think first you have to figure out what your budget is. I knew I didn't want to go over $2,500 on my dress so I knew better to try on dresses over that. Also I went to four different places to try on dresses and compare prices before I made a decision.
  • Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for the responses! I really needed to hear all of those things!! #1 - I am so used to family members and friends shopping only at Davids Bridal that the only cost I have really heard of for a dress was $500-$700 so $1500 seemed like an awful lot. It definitely helps hearing that its not too far above the average. #2 - I have been to Davids Bridal a couple of times and will go back in January when their new lines come out. I will also stop at a few other local shops to try things on. I definitely do not plan on buying the dress yet, regardless of whether I decide I can afford it or not. #3 - The budget is something really tricky for us right now. My parents are covering the reception (which fortunately includes cake and centerpiecs) and my fiance's parents will cover the rehearsal dinner. We are planning on printing our own invitations, programs, etc. What is up in the air is any further contributions by his parents. I know they are willing to contribute more, but we haven't gotten exactly what they would be willing to pay for. It's hard to bug them right now because his dad just lost his job and I don't feel right asking them about it. Soooo it's hard to say what we can afford when our budget has not been officially set.

  • Obviously, as people have said, only you can decide what "too much" is.  If you are having doubts about it, perhaps it really is too much for you.  Then again, if you would have to settle for any other dress, just do it.  You won't be happy otherwise.  What I'd like to point out is that your wedding is a long ways away!  I have a similar budget situation, and a similar far-off wedding date.  Because there are some details (such as the dress) that I really do care about, my fiance and I have been putting away a relatively insignificant amount of money each month, dedicating it to the wedding.  If you cut out whatever unnecessary monthly expenses you may have (do you get Starbuck's five times a week?), you can easily save monthly and end up with a decent amount to add to whatever you already have budgeted.  That can make this purchase (or maybe, in exchange, one later on) feel like less of a hard hit.  It may not be possible for you, but it has worked out great for us, and we will be grateful that we thought to start saving so far in advance!
