Underwater digital camera - opinions & recommendations

Tell me your thoughts/opinions/recommendations on underwater digital cameras. I'm looking to buy one for my husband for x-mas for snorkeling and other various activities that we can't use our regular camera for, for fear of ruining it when we get it wet. So chime in with your thoughts please!

Re: Underwater digital camera - opinions & recommendations

  • I have an Olympus that is nearly indestructible. The camera can go underwater ( up to 30 meters I believe), it can be dropped, and its great for sand because its all one piece. I have had mine over a year and I am very bad about destroying things. It wasn't too expensive ( around $250 I think) and it takes great pics.

  • I just bought a Canon SD780is and LOVE it so far! It's really tiny and shoots in HD! It's not an underwater camera per se, but Canon makes an underwater housing that a lot of nesties on the travel board recommended to me. Another option I've heard good things about is the Canon D10- it's a true underwater digital camera. I think it's around $300 or so. It got good reviews, but it looked a little too bulky compared to the sleek 780is.

  • I have the Olympus underwater/freezeproof/drop proof camera. I have two opinions on this camera... I have had it for almost 2 years... First it takes great pics, even underwater. I took it on a cruise back in April and it was FABULOUS! HOWEVER, my second experience was AWFUL! Mind you I didnt do anything different... but we went to Cabo in July... we werent in Mexico for 24 hours and my camera (after being in the pool) stopped WORKING.... then on day 6 of vacation, came back on like nothing happened... Then I got home and half of my pictures had deleted themselves off the camera.. It was a MESS! My fiance proposed on vacation in CABO and due to the camera mess, I ruined the "planned" proposal....  When I got home, I called Olympus and sent it in to them.. It was out of warrenty, but they said that you should send these types of camera in for a "check" once a year and after you use it in salt water to follow the "cleanning" directions that they provide you. I paid $100 to get it repaired and I haven't had a problem since... Best of luck :)
  • I have the Canon D10 power shot and I absolutly LOVE it! We bought one after my dad recomended it to us after he took it on a rafting trip in Peru. He siad it survived the trip and still works as good as when he got it. We got ours to take on our HM and it was awesome. It goes to 33ft and the quality is awesome. We use it as our regular camera as well! I would highly recomend it, I could never find it in the stores so I had to order it from Amazon.
  • i have an older regular olypmus digi and i purchased a waterproof case for it. it's wonderful! i like to dive down and see things and i worry that the ones that say 'waterproof to ___ feet' will get broken if i go further than the 20 or so feet that they're ok for.

  • I also used an underwater housing unit for our camera. It worked great.  I am a fan of the housing units vs the underwater camera.
  • I bought the $30 MyAquaCase for my Canon SD890 and it worked pretty well for snorkeling in French Polynesia. The main issue is you can't actually see what you're taking a photo of, so you just have to hope and click a lot. It is also a little harder to change the settings, so I got lazy and didn't change much once I got the case on - just turned it on and off and shut the flash off. The camera didn't get wet, and the photos came out pretty well, although I often used "I'm Feeling Lucky" in Picasa to take out the haze (similar to when you are taking a photo through a plane window). If I were to buy a whole new camera though, I'd go for the D10 as I've read good things about it.
  • hello - I know this is an old post, but I am having a similar question !

I bought a very nice camera for my fiance last Xmas, so don't really want too buy a new one, but as we're going to South Pacific for our honeymoon, and we love snorkelling, I'd like to buy a case to take underwater pictures.

Does anyone has a good case to recommend? I'ma bit worried about comments that say you can't see what you're taking, I know that will annoy the hell out of my beloved fiance  lol

    thanks for your help!
