This Dollar Dance okay?

One of our trading room assistants  was of Polish descent and married a young man of Italian descent. She invited all of us to the wedding and because she was very well liked, almost all of us attended. Huge wedding some place in Staten Island. She had dollar dance, complete with the white silk purse on one arm and it was a huge success.  She was also a very pretty girl and the guys were lined up to dance with her.Her cousin's band played for the wedding, including about an hour of the dollar dance. Her cousin was the lead of a very well known rock band in the 70s & 80s and they offered to play for the wedding.Only Dollar Dance I ever really approved of.  They cashed in BIG TIME and everyone loved it.The marriage only lasted a year but we still talk about that dollar dance!p.s. sorry Jill for the repeat story, I know you heard it a long time back.

  • I have no problem with them if they are traditional in a circle.  It's when people do them for the express purpose of cashing in that I think it's tacky.
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • I too am an avid supporter of the dollar dance.

  • fishy, I truth, if it's customary by your local or by your national origin, I wouldn't flame it.This is really the only one I ever saw personally
  • I've never been to a wedding without a dollar dance, and believe you me, i've been to a lot of weddings. It's my favorite part of most weddings, actually.

  • "including an hour of the dollar dance." How long did it last? I agree that if something is acceptable in your circle, then it's okay.

  • Our will be like this. FI's family is very polish. Our band will be playing the traditional polka, not some song with "Money" in the title. I still don't like the idea, but FI was really set on it.

  • Ummm let me think...our dollar dance didn't take an hour, I don't think.? But maybe it did. After awhile, it kind of became a huge group dance, and people were throwing money all over and break dancing on it. It was awesome.

  • When I go to weddings with FI, they last at least 30 minutes. We planned on the same amount of time for ours.

  • I should mention that I get why people are against it, I've just never been to a wedding without one and would feel slighted if I wedding didn't have one. Like they didn't care enough about their guests to allow us all a chance to have a dance. Definitely a regional thing.

  • That sounds pretty sweet, but I would think it would have been even better if the guests didn't have to pay to dance to the cool band... jus' sayin'.    Also, mine was the first wedding I've ever been to that didn't have a dollar dance.
  • I like feeling like I contribute to the couple. It's a dollar. Most people give between 5 and 20. It's just super fun.

  • Dollar dances are extremely popular with both FI and my families.  We're both polish, and people would actually be  disappointed if we didn't have one.
  • Also, if I were ever to go to a wedding and they didn't do a dollar dance, I kind of take it as them thinking they are too good for it or above it. My in laws were recently at a wedding and they didn't do one, and they were seriously offending and thought the couple was being uppity. It's so totally regional, i think.

  • I've never been to an Italian wedding without one (including the big white purse). I've also never seen a Dollar Dance done with anything less than 10s.  And the dollars are usually much larger.

  • Dollar Dances are extremely common in the area where I grew up and the wedding will be, as well as common within my family.I am not doing one, but crfische, it never occurred to me that people would think I was uppity or something for not doing one. I didn't even think of that. I'm kind of mostly just hoping no one will notice. I really just don't like to dance and HATE to be touched.

  • Yeah, that totally makes sense, Teej. I get that there are a million reasons to not do them, but I think it gets lost in the shuffle that there are equally as many reasons as to why people do them, ya know? When we meet, we're dancing, and I'm dipping you. ;)

  • I think my family knows me well enough that if anyone did notice that there wasn't a dollar dance, they'd whisper amongst themselves, "she probably doesn't want any of us to touch her."And then they'd silently add, "she always was a biitch like that."

  • Maybe I'll have little cards made up for the tables:"There will be no Dollar Dance due to the bride's hatred of physical contact. In fact, if you could limit your well wishes to blown kisses and heartfelt waves from across the room, it would be greatly appreciated."
