I am officially freaked out (long vent)

I don't know why I am posting this. Maybe b/c Im alone in my house, creeped out, and I need some rational opinions? We have been living in our house for nearly 4 years. It was built in the 70's, completely gutted and remodeled right before we moved in. We are in an extremely quiet neighborhood away from any main roads. I have never felt scared in my house. I am pretty sensitive to anything paranormal, but I wont get into details. I just have never had those feelings in this house. Over the last month, I have been hearing footsteps and banging at night. We have cats and dogs who sleep in our finished basement at night. I figured it was our cats going up and down the steps, but up until a month ago I never heard these noises. I kind of ignored it, but honestly, it was unusual. This weekend I had a dream about my H and I buying a new house. I was in the basement of the house and I was attacked by something paranormal. It was super vivid. All the light bulbs were blown out and I ran to the door and it slammed shut on my hands. I woke up terrified. The dream was with me all day.Last night, H was upstairs watching TV in the bedroom and I was in the basement. He sent me a chat on facebook to ask me if I heard that squeeling noise. He searched the entire upstairs, under the guest room bed, but he said it clearly came from the hallway. We have electric heat and it isn't even turned on. No water was running. There was no explanation for what he heard. We forgot about it and went to bed. This morning, I was sleeping and H was already gone to work. I heard the squeeling. My dog SHOT up out of bed and started barking furiously. I have NO idea what it was. It came from the hallway, but my bedroom door was shut. I just layed there for a minute bc I couldn't believe what I heard. I got up to look in the hallway and there was nothing. I went back to sleep. About an hour later, I heard something in the garage which is right underneath our bedroom. I didn't hear the garage door go up, but I heard something that sounded like someone moving boxes. Then I heard the lawnmower moving. The wheels make a clicking noise when you roll it backwards. It's a VERY distinct noise. I thought maybe H left the garage door up by accident and my uncle was here. He sometimes cuts the grass for us, but I didn't know why he would be there so early. I sat up and listened to this for about 2 minutes. I then heard someone speak. One word, very clearly, but I have no idea what it said. It didn't sound like English (chills). I went downstairs into the basement and to the door that leads into the garage. I opened the door, it was pitch black and the garage door was closed. I tried to turn the light on in the garage and it wouldn't turn on. I flicked the light switch 3 times before it turn on. Nothing was moved and no one was there. There has got to be an explanation. I just don't know what it could possibly be... Any ideas? Should we burn this house down and move ASAP? I'm kidding, but I hate being scared in my own house. Especially in the middle of the damn day.Anyone have any weird shiit go on in their house? ....and the door at the top of the steps just opened for no reason. sweet.

  • I have goosebumps.  Um, for the things moving in the garage, is it really windy?  Could the wind be blowing in and moving things or making funny noises?  Most garages really aren't air tight.Could the squealing be coming from a neighbor's house? Outside?  Is it the sound that the wind makes when it whistles through a window that is just a teeny bit open?

  • Wow. I got nothing. The only time I freak myself out, is usually if I watch a CSI marathon and feel like someone is watching me or is going to kill me, but nothing paranormal. I'm sorry. :(
  • I'm officially afraid for you.

  • That is scary.  Maybe you have a very large rat?! Aside from the incident where the dog shot up, have the animals been acting strange?
  • ive never experienced anything like this.. so it's hard for me to believe. I would almost think it was a hallucination... but I'm boring and don't go for paranormal explanations.

  • Ghosts don't bother me but I was staying once at my parents house, which is in the middle of nowhere, when they were traveling.  There was a wicked storm at night when my mum call feeling guilty that she hadn't told me about the ghost yet.  I was like it's a dark and stormy night, why are you telling me this!  She was afraid I would be freaked out by the footsteps as I was the only one in the house.  I was fine until she called.  Ugh.
  • Can I stay in your house? :)
  • Dont watch paranormal activity, thats the only advice ive got for you.
  • I wish it were the wind. The squeeling comes from directly outside our bedroom door and to the left. No windows in the hallway and all windows are closed in the house. It's been cool here, but mild. Not windy. We have lived here for 4 years and all of these noises are new. I have never experienced any of this in our house before. I have never heard of a ghost just showing up after living 4 years in a house, but we haven't changed anything structurally or put anything new into our house that would explain the noises. I can't even check the door at the top of the steps. I am frozen on the couch right now. lol
  • Oh and as far as weirdshit in my house, my dad's house has seriously strange things happen all the time. Unexplained voices, shadows, footsteps, a figure out in the yard. There are times when I have been there alone and I had a very distinct feeling that I was being watched. It's not surprising though. Two family members were very ill and lived out their last days in that house (although no one actually died there).

  • I lived in two "haunted" houses when I was little...Which is part of the reason I am still petrified sp? of the dark. I feel for you, it probably won't stop unless you move :(
  • It does seem pretty weird that it just started.  I assume you don't remember any noises like this at the beginning of last winter either?  Sometimes houses just make funny noises when it's going from warmer weather to cooler weather.(PS, as much s I'd like to believe everything I'm telling you, I'm kind of freaked out for you too!)

  • As for the animals, all but our lhasa has been acting normally and I never even thought about it until just now. He has been extremely weird since we got home from our HM. Crawling on top of us and panting, trying to climb to the highest point he can get to, and just generally not relaxing. The other dog is fine and the cats couldn't care less.
  • I have had friends who SWORE their house was haunted, and every.single.time it was something totally explainable - they just didn't like the explanation.  (I think they liked the idea that it was haunted.)In any case, if you don't have any evidence of something scary, I wouldn't worry about it.  Even if you have a ghostly friend, it really does sound more like friend than foe.

  • I would get out of the house. Not for bad reasons, but to get some perspective. I'm not saying you are imagining things or anything, but as someone who has similar expereinces I usually leave the house. Go for a drive, get a coffee. Think about what could be making the noises. Write them down. Make it logical. It helps if you aren't in the house, your mind is clearer. Wait til your H gets home and then go around and check on all the noises together.
  • Foundation isn't completely level, and wiring is old. How about that?????

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • You’re probably being stalked by a demon. You should have your H buy a video camera to document everything. I wouldn’t taunt the demon though, apparently that doesn’t work out so well in the end…Seriously though, it’s probably raccoons or squirrels. I’d call pest control and see if they can set some traps.

  • Wow. That would totally freak me out. I just tried writing you like four logical explanations, but they really were no help at all. When I was alone in a creepy sounding house I did three things. Prayed, played music, and kept a gun close by. Sorry I'm not more help!
  • I know a dude that does paranormal investigations.  I would call him and get him to come over and investigate.  98% of the time when they go places, they come out and say they don't know what it was, but it wasn't a ghost.
  • Eh, it's probably haunted.  Someone turned the TV onto the UHF channel and let them in.  Seriously, I stayed in my grandma's old house and I (along with every guest I had) swore it was haunted.  At least 2 people and several pets have died in there.  I have all kinds of weird stories.  It sounds silly, but the first time I stayed the night I told whatever may have been there, look, after dark, you can have the whole downstairs and even most of the upstairs.  Let me have the bedroom and don't weird me out when I get up to go to the bathroom.  Anyway, I felt better after I did that and the strange noises and lights stopped bothering me.   However, I could not get anyone, including grown 20 year old guys to come visit.  They were all scared and wouldn't venture out of the living room.  Was it the cemetery across the street?  The pet graveyard on the side house?  The deaths in the house?  The strange happenings in the house?  Who knows.  But they were all scared.  pusssies.:)  Best of luck to you and your poltergeist!

  • Ditto pp that there's probably a logical explanation.  It sounds like it could just be drafts or something, with the squealing noise (air through a small gap somewhere) and the door randomly opening (changing pressure forces it open as air comes in on one side).  The lawn mower and everything, too, probably has a reasonable explanation.  That said, this story still creeps me out.  I wouldn't get off the couch, either, if I were you, no matter how logical I'd like to be about it.
  • Squirrels and Raccoons can make seriously loud noises in a house.  I think pest control is a good place to start.  Plus if the weather is turning colder it may have triggered the animals to start taking cover.
  • Yeah, I agree with Leah&Christian. If this continues to freak you out, get a medium or a paranormal investigator or someone out to the house. At the very least it would be entertaining :)
  • I can't believe our house just became randomly haunted. I'm going to call an electrician. There has to be a logical explanation. This house isn't that old and all its previous owners are still living. Unless it's a demon which, seriously, I can't believe I would even type that. I'm still too scared to take a shower before my H gets home...
  • Hauntings can become active at any time, it might not be the house thats haunted but the property. What was there before your house was built? If its poltergeist activity, is there anytihng emotional going on at home now, stress, etc?
  • As far as pests are concerned, I haven't even seen as much as a spider in my basement before. We have had an exterminator since we moved in bc we had a wasp problem by our pool from our neighbors trees. He put mouse traps in the garage, but he said our house becoming infested by anything is highly unlikely. It's the wind, faulty wiring... or something.
  • What was there before your house was built? If its poltergeist activity, is there anytihng emotional going on at home now, stress, etc?Nothing but woods before our house. We still live in a pretty wooded area. Our neighborhood is recently developed (late 90's). We have one of the oldest houses here. Yes, there has been a TON of stress for the past 2 months or so.
  • You said that the "squeeling" is outside your bedroom and to the left.. any change its near a bathroom? I've witnessed plumbing/toilets/etc make some awful high pitched noises before. As far as noises in your basement I could see it being plumbing as well. Pipes coming loose from walls and when being used or not being used air and/or water could cause the pipe to move or vibrate causing weird noises. I live down south and we dont have basements, but I do know that most if not all of your main plumbing lines come into your basement. I'm all for the Haunted / Ghost Hunters thing. Heck they're plumbers call them! Maybe they can determine whats going on! :) Ok, I've talked about plumbing enough.. Another option?? I think all the others have been pretty well put out there!
  • *chance.. Any chance its near a bathroom?
  • As for the animals, all but our lhasa has been acting normally and I never even thought about it until just now. He has been extremely weird since we got home from our HM. This to me is the key.  IF you are being haunted, it sounds like it began after you came back from honeymoon, aka after you got married.  Maybe that is the key change?  Otherwise, it's probably nothing or there's a logical explanation per pp's.
