as I now have a new family...

... I also get to go to new events.Specifically a Republican dinner.  I have no idea what to wear to this thing. Also, I'm in shock that I agreed to go to a Republican event.

  • I'm not even kidding when I say this.  Depending on how fancy it is wear conservative clothing and anything with pearls.  Every Republican loves pearls.  Or black and white ensembles.  What are you going to?

  • I think it would be fun.  Just remember to pinch yourself hard if you think about doing anything else other than politely smiling.Definitely a string of pearls.
  • ummm, a sweater set?  With a skirt?  And a hip flask. ;)  I'd have to drink to get through one of those.
  • I get the pleasure of going to a Republican event every Christmas- it's called DH's company holiday dinner. I keep very very quiet.
  • I really don't think I could go.  I just... I couldn't. Where are Sarah and TJ?

  • Right here.I totally wouldn't know what to wear, either.

  • Well great I don't have any pearls.  I guess I have a pearl bracelet and studs... enough?Apparently it's suposed to be "business" clothes.  So says MIL.  I was thinking about white pants, black heels and a black wrap sweater with a collared shirt.I actually have no idea what the purpose of the dinner is.  A bunch of republicans gearing up for campaign season?

  • Actually Britne is right.  Repubs love the sweater set.  Think of anything stereotypical and that probably fits.

  • Well, you could always just dress like you would to a Democrat event...considering they all dress about the same and all.
  • ^ THIS.  Call me crazy and Independent but I never noticed a Republican style.

  • butbutbut I don't HAVE a sweater set.Do you see how this is working out.I'M TOO DAMNED FASHIONABLE TO BE A REPUBLICAN.

  • Why are you going? My inlaws are Republicans and I have a great relationship, but I wouldn't attend a Republican (or church) event for anything. Although to the more practical issue, wear what you'd wear to anything else at that time and place. Hard as it to remember, Republicans really are just people too...and they dress like anyone else.
  • tenofcups4me, indeed.Republicans are people, too!

  • I've been to some Republican-type events with FI and/or his family members.  There appears to be a lot of Brooks Brothers and J. Press on the men.  I usually just wear a plain old LBD if it's a cocktail thing and a suit with a button down under it if it's a businessy thing.  I just don't show too much cleavage and it's been fine.

  • Obviously they are people :) I married one (sort of). Except he looks like a hippie. I'm going to the event because his family is in politics and I'm supporting them during campaign season.  Thankfully our republicans are not nearly as conservative as some out there....

  • Fairly certain that as long as you didn't wear a dominatrix outfit or your outfit from a day in the stands at a NASCAR event/mudbogging/dirt bike race, you'd fit right in whatever you wear.

  • psssht, TJ next think you'll be telling us that Republicans put their pants on one leg at a time, too. You and your secret Republican pants. I'm on to you!!
  • A flavor flav clock, that's what you should wear, duh!

  • It's true that everyone wears the same outifts.  But i definitely think that Dems (at least here that I know) get more fun and funky.  I would I could be fun and funky at work.  Boo me.

  • Every Republican loves pearls.Um no.  Just no.
  • I guess I just find it kind of mind-boggling that you can support something you obviously don't believe in. I get family ties and I'm all about family support. But to me it would be the height of hypocrisy to publicly support values and goals that were in direct conflict to my own. I wouldn't do it.
