  • I 2nd the eee pc.  The 8.5" does lead to some intereting typing/spelling errors though. What kind did he get you?

  • It's so cute and tinyThat's what she said.But really...go Scott! I love surprises.
  • The 8.5 was too small for me.  I got a 10.5 or 11.  I don't remember right now.

  • For those of you with tiny computers, how do they compare to a normal sized laptop? My fiance is looking to get a new computer, because his regular sized Dell is old and has had many problems, and he is considering something like the netbook.

  • Mine is 3x the computer my old desktop was.  I run quicken and Photoshop Elements with no problem.  BUT I am not a gamer.at.all.  Unless Free Cell counts. The only real downside is there is no internal CD-rom.  some of the "larger" netbooks are starting to put them in. I travel a ton, so the 2.5 lbs is perfect to just toss in my bag and go.  makes it so much easier than Hs 17" at security too.

  • I have a desktop for "real" computer use and use the eee for school and portability.  It has long battery life (3+ hours with constant wireless internet).  If he has sausage hands he would probably struggle.  My FI has large fingers and can barely type on mine.  One of the newer versions has a cd drive, which was a big deal.  Mine has lots of media hookups including VGA which is nice.  I think it'd be a tough primary computer.  Your risk of tendonitis goes up from the position of the elbows.  I can give more info if you have specifics.

  • I'm so lost with this new laptop, I've been exclusively using a Mac for years now and I get so confused with the switch from the command key to the control key. And windows 7 is just plain weird to me.
    image
  • Hmm...the increased risk of tendonitis might be a problem, since he does a lot of typing for school.  Next year when I move in we will also have my Mac, which is old, but faster and more reliable than his current computer.

  • Well, since we have joint checking, it's all the same. BUT he broke his phone today and needed a new one. He could have gotten a droid and no netbook for yours truly, OR he could have gotten a nice blackberry and also got a netbook. He chose the blackberry and a netbook, which i didn't know was an option, so I was stoked for him to get a new phone, and he came home with a netbook, too, for me!He's good stuff, maynard.

  • It's also no good for gaming.  The video card wouldn't be able to handle it.  No more than casual stuff.  No wow, no sims, nothing video card heavy.

  • He's not much of a gamer, so that wouldn't be an issue.  He just needs to write papers for school and use the internet.

  • night, I watch movies on mine with no problem.

  • Movies are fine.  It is usually the complex hexagons that'll do it.Internet and stuff is fine.  So I'd look at sausage fingers and elbow angle issues.  Otherwise, there are some decent 15 and 17 inch laptops for $400-$500.

  • Yay fishy that's great! I have a dell mini 10 from whoever asked. I love it. Super portable, perfect for what I need it for (internet, videos, and typing). My only gripe is short battery life and it didn't come with any word programs, but I downloaded open office to combat that (though I do miss the resume wizard and other templates). $250, refurb from dell.com

  • ah yes, of course, those pesky complex hexigons... DH saw my keyboard and laughed while he was walking away. I think one of his fingers covers 2-3 keys at a time.

  • Check with school before you graduate Whit.  I can get office for 8 bucks through my school.
