FI keeps getting bitten randomly by red fire ants in our house. Last night, he discovered that an area I cannot begin to fathom under our carpet is completely and utterly INFESTED with red fire ants. (!!) Somehow, they've managed to get into our house - probably through a small crack between the sliding glass door and the baseboard and have set up shop in our living room. FI noticed a tiny pile of dirt between the carpet and the baseboard and was like, "What the ..." and pulled the carpet back slightly. HUNDREDS of red fire ants poured out from under the carpet. (Right about now, you probably have the willies like I do.) He got two pairs of pliers and pulled up the carpet in an area about 3 feet wide and it was like a huge, black, moving mass. They poured out, swarmed the pliers in his hands, and started running across the carpet. He got the vacuum to vacuum them up/fend them off but that only made them more mad and they seemed to come out in endless numbers. We were outnumbered and ran upstairs with the dogs, trying to figure out what to do. At some point, we came back down to assess the situation and they'd gone back into their stupid little nest under the carpet. FI called a pest control guy - this is dangerous at this point - but he can't be out until tomorrow. I came home from school today and it seems to be ten times worse than yesterday. And some of them have WINGS now! The vacuum infuriates them and I'm deathly allergic to insect stings so I'm hiding upstairs with the dogs again.

Has anyone else ever heard of anything like this? I cannot believe how crazy this is.
