Re: HO!LY! SH-BEEP!-T! (NWR)

  • I've heard of using Malt O Meal to kill a nest; they eat the grains and it swells to explode their stomachs. Not sure if that would work on those buggers though. Gah! Thousands of EXPLODING ants!

  • Salt, no we are currently renting right now. We told our landlord about the problem and she is going to pay for the pest guy. FI is going to take care of sealing off the back door (I guess with caulk? I don't know anything about that stuff). But landlord knows she has some baseboards and other foundational stuff she's going to have to fix. :/

  • ... Are red fire ants the new form of fuucking zombies? Seriously, this is horror flick material.
  • I am so relieved you don't own the house!
  • There is one queen but there are female winged ants that can become queens. The males are winged too sometimes but they are only helpers.

  • Have you asked your landlord to pay for a night in a hotel? I know I've had leases that safeguard the tenant against living in certain conditions (excessive pests, heat breaks, etc).
  • La, I hadn't thought of that. I'll run it by FI and see what he thinks!

  • Whew well at least you won't have to pay for all of that yourself. That said, if it's a hazardous place for you to be, you could always try to get your landlord to pay for a hotel. If you are allergic to insect bites, this could be a very bad situation to stay in.

  • I can not even imagine this.  Good luck and hopefully you can talk to your landlord about paying for a hotel, those sound like really unsafe conditions especially because you have allergies.

  • Oh no! I'm sorry... that sucks. I do have the heeby jeebys now!

  • Bippy, I know. I wouldn't be surprised if I woke up in the middle of the night to find that they'd eaten everyone in our neighborhood, set our cars on fire and were crawling up the stairs to start chewing on our faces. And FI just told me that they have mandibles, but they don't actually just bite - they have mandibles and stingers. They use their mandibles to hold onto you and then they STING YOU REPEATEDLY. This just keeps getting better.

  • I had an infestation of flying ants two years ago. I set off bug bombs. I just had to leave the house for six hours--can you find a place to go for that long? The floors were covered in bugs when we got back--but at least they were all dead.

  • I hadn't heard of these things in FL. Crazy.

  • Holy crap that sucks!!  I think I would have to find another place to stay, I would be way too creeped out imagining them crawling everywhere.

  • Shannon - I have Hilton Honors points saved up from gov't travel.  I think they have to be used by the end of the year and we're not planning any trips any time soon.  They would cover a night or two at a hampton inn level of hotel, depending on where you live..  I offer them to you.email me if you want - jarmocida at yahoo

  • Vally, really? We have them in MS. I thought the entire deep south would have all kinds of red stinging bugs.

I think FI is going to try to find something industrial to bring home and treat the outside nest with. If that doesn't make the inside nest go away, we will probably have to bug bomb. For these little fuuckers, it might need to be an atomic bug bomb.

  • Oh holy hell - I'm itching all over thinking about this !!I'm SOOO sorry you and pups are having to deal with this until FI gets home and the pest guy gets there tomorrow. I wonder if a friend would take you in with the pups for the evening? I don't even think I could sleep at all!

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • Ang- I'm sure they're here, I'm just glad I haven't encountered them yet. Maybe they're afraid of the water? Yeah, that must be it.

  • Tide, that is the sweetest gesture. I can't tell you how awesome it is that you would offer that. I think you should hang onto those points though in case you need them. If the situation gets desperate, I know some people we could stay with. But from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU so much for offering something like that to someone you don't know. :::hugs::: <3

  • I'm going to see what FI comes home with tonight! He said it will make them wish they had never happened upon OUR house. :D So excited! I hope their demise is as dramatic as their first appearance.

  • I should clarify, I've seen red ants before. I was responding more to Shannon's comment of this is a crazy type of ant that was brought over to Florida from another country:)

  • Will your renters insurance cover the hotel?

  • Tide, that was seriously the nicest thing I've seen today. You are awesome.
  • I would definitely try the bug bomb. It will take care of the bug in that room without a doubt.

  • Vally, I will find some information on them. Here's something I found - it's really interesting - but I'm not sure if this is the same ant we have. But it talks about the Federal Government's War On Fire Ants in the '50s. (Scroll down to Red Ant) http://www.safe2use.com/pests/fireants/fireants1.htm Not clicky. Sorry!
