Re: Poll: Things I didn't even know exsisted...

  • I was suprised when people hadn't heard of dollar dances, either. I just thought it was something everyone did. I also didnt realize STD's were that rampant. Also, i've learned a lot about Canadiua.

  • fishy, I had only received ONE wedding save the date although I had received them for business functions.   I have enough fridge magnets, thanks
  • Oh yeah, STD's and non matchy BM dresses.
  • I kind of think it's funny that people think that I want a magnet of them on my fridge all year. Nope, I don't. I like ya and all, but my niece, nephew, and family and friends get top billing on the ol' fridge.

  • I second the DIY obsessiveness. Also, all the different kinds of bustles. Never knew there were so many.

  • That dollar dances are bad (midwest, y'all).I refuse to believe this is a midwest thing.  I was raised in Chicago and have attended weddings in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Ohio and Iowa and have only seen one done, ever, and it was a cultural thing.  I swear the Midwest isn't that bad!

  • I think it's more common in the upper midwest, ND, MN, SD, IA, and WI. I've been to a bagillion weddings, all of which have had a dollar dance. I had never heard that anyone thought they were bad until coming here and if people go to wedding and they don't have one, peopel think they are being uppity and snotty. True story.I get why people think they are bad, it was just a perspective I had never heard.

  • I'm with Fischy on the dollar dance.  I've never NOT seen one at a wedding, and get looked at like I'm an alien if I suggested not doing one.  It's something everyone seems to do, at least everyone I know.  Maybe it's a midwest farmer type thing more than a city thing.
  • Every wedding I've been to in Missouri, Illinois and Kansas has had dollar dances. Every.single.one. It definitely wasn't a cultural thing, and definitely wasn't strictly an upper midwest thing. I'm in the same city as you Brie, and it's a lot more prevelant here than you'd think.
  • That people existed who were THIS psychotically obsessed with spelling errors and/or punctuation.   I get it if someone is consistently raping the English language and it's punctuation,  but getting all bent out of shape over one misspelled word or a few extra commas?  Umm, ok then.

  • East, you uhh...missed a comma in there, buddy.

  • Were did I due that? :)I had also never heard of grooms cakes, ribbon wands or dollar dances.  And I'm from West Virginia, ya'll.  We do some tacky @ss backwater stuff there that would make your head spin and WE don't even do dollar dances.

  • Eh, I've only lived here for 6 months.Also, I don't really consider KC/Kansas the Midwest.

  • Brie - what would you consider it then? Especially since it's smack dab in the middle of the country?

  • I read about the fake veil a couple of times on the HM board.  Apparently it's an attempt to get discounts and free upgrades.  The 16 year-old FG came from a post on my club board - a bunch of girls thought it was completely fine, and someone even found a TK article about 'adult flower girls'.

  • When we went to mexico for our honeymoon, there weren't a whole lot of veils. HOWEVER, when we went to Jamaica for our anniversary, we were in the minority of pepole not wearing wedding garb. It was super weird.

  • Ha! No. Nor did we have shirts that said GAME OVER or matching shirts that said bride and groom, respectively. Nor, did I wear my veil.

  • I think if I'd been asked to be a flower girl when I was 16 I would have laughed in the bride's face. I mean... seriously. Why?
  • My dad told my grandmother we weren't going to have a dollar dance and she started crying. Apparently you can't just give money as a gift, it must be given as a dance. okfinewhatever we had a dance. The plus of it, I did get to dance with one of my friends who is undergoing a sex change, and was uncomfortable asking me to dance with so many older people (50+) in attendance. Once my girlfriends started making the dollar dance a free for all dance fest she was able to dance with me without feeling weird.

  • Dollar dances, bridal portraits, STDs, unity candles, sand ceremonies, non-matching BM dresses, mother-son dances, WP dances, gaps, personal attendents, b-pics. And I thought people did just one engagement portrait, or maybe 2-3, to have something to put in the newspaper, not entire e-pic sessions. "special cake cutting songs" Yeah, there was a poll on my club board about what was your first dance song, recessional, mother/son dance, bouquet toss, cake cutting song, etc. I was all, "Uh, I have to a song for cake cutting?" And someone came back at me with, "Yeah, silence is a GREAT way to keep a party going." Um, doesn't the cake cutting take 30 seconds? You announce it, cut it, people ooh and ahh, and you feed each other cake. My whole wedding/life doesn't need a soundtrack.

  • Fishy, if you go to Disneyland, they have veils attached to mouse ears you can buy and wear around.

  • Meghan, I think we met in a former life. I'm suprised you don't remember me. And I've seen those ears! I think if you go to disneyland to get married or on your honeymoon, you almost HAVE to get them. Cheesy? Hell yes. Cute? Yeah, I think it's a cute memento. Would I wear them? No.
