Hey Girls! What does everyone think of videographers? Do you think that this is a good area to save on, and just forego the video, or is it a must have? Thoughts? if it is a "must have" then which areas are you guys saving on?
For us the videographer was a must-have: primarily we wanted to have a record of the ceremony and the speeches, which went by in a blur. Also my sister and DH sang with friends as a surprise, and one of my elderly relatives who was not able to make it made a recorded greeting that we were able to incorporate into the video - so for us it was definitely worth it! We "saved" with a photographer who did an all-digital package for us (AMAZING!), and we had a small wedding party which saved us money on things like flowers and gifts. We also didn't spend a lot on invitations or other paper stuff. The dollar store was our friend when it came to extra decor...If you're in the Toronto area, we used mgxproductions.com - a pleasure to work with, very discreet, quick turnaround, and will definitely negotiate on the price.

When we first started planning our wedding, we didn't video was that important, but then we went to a friend's wedding, and saw their videographer's work. Then it became an absolute must-have. But if we hadn't seen work of such high quality, it wouldn't have been nearly as important. The other thing that tipped us over to having a video was that I randomly came across my parents' wedding video one day. They had never even seen it themselves because they didn't have the equipment at home to play the filmstrips. So I got them converted to DVD, and watching it together, after 30 years, was honestly one of the best moments I've ever had with my family. Our budget was pretty skewed to reflect how important things were. We totally splurged on the food and the video. Photography was also important, but we were lucky enough to find an amazing photographer who was pretty inexpensive only because she was pretty new at the time. - I bought a $550 dress and borrowed my veil from my MOH. My shoes were pretty cheap too, plus I can use them again.- I spent - I DIYed the invitations and programs. - Our musicians were all friends of ours who did it for free (though we did get them thank you gifts).- We booked our DJ on the spot at a bridal show at a 25% discount. - We didn't have a limo - we drove our own car for part of the day, and had a friend drive us in the evening. - We didn't have favours.- Our wedding rings are simple plain bands, though this suited our style better anywayOur wedding was pretty high budget, but it was really only a major splurge on a few key things.
Also, you should do some research and look at samples of videographers' work, and imagine yourselves in it, before you decide... I think it's hard to make a decision just on the abstract concept of "videography".
I agree with ring_pop that video was not a priority until I saw some of the beautiful work that was out there. My perception of video was totally different prior to seeing some really amazing videos. I expected boring 4 hour videos of the entire ceremony and reception, not edited moments that were put together as a movie trailer. We're lucky because my FBIL has a wedding videography company, but if we were to pay, it would definitely be a significant part of the budget. My Save the Date video is on my blog, if you want to see!
