Cake Cutting Fee

Does someone want to explain this nonsense to me?I heard back from the Epic and they will credit me $5 a person for the cake BUT... they will charge $5 per person for the cake cutting. How does that make any sense.Aren't they cutting the cake either way? And as far as bringing in  my own "outside" vendor, aren't Ana, Edda and DD "Outside" as well? This bums me out like you wouldn't believe. Now we have to decide if we want to pay the upcharges to DD and pray they don't F up our cake or go with the mediocre cake from Eddas and hope no one notices the taste.I'm starting to think F it, I don't need a wedding cake.

wow that is lame... $5 to cut cake? they have to cut it anyhow right? I doubt DD, Anas or Edda's sends over a pre-sliced cake or a cake gnome to slice it for the epic. WTF! I'd read up on DD more - see if you find more reviews. if most of them are positive, I'd book with them since they tasted the best.

Wait...what??? Really?   Can't you ask them to waive the fee since you are already spending a lot of $$$ there? Negotiate with them! Stupid people! I'm doing my cake with DD...what custom cake are you making? Is it an odd shape or something?
  • edited December 2011
wow! $5 is ridiculous. my venue charges $3.50 for cake cutting. I agree with goldie....do a little more investigation. It seems like DD has gotten really good reviews from some knotties. good luck!

Does the Epic let you take any outside food? For example, mini cakes or cupcakes for each individual guest. There is nothing for them to cut, it's it's personalized for your guests. Just a thought. GL!
  • edited December 2011
That sucks! It makes no sense, whatsoever...did you actually say that to them? Umm, what's the difference who's cake your cutting? And really, $5? That must be the best cake cutter on this side of the US... I know this is probably not what you want, but what about doing cupcakes in a cake like form? It's probably the only way to have a "cake" (ish) but stick it to them! GL with whatever you decide!

Alissa LMAO at Cake Gnome!Michelle, we are not doing ANYTHING out of the ordinary. Regular ROUND cake but with the design like our invites... so wavy lines. I mean, SIMPLE as PIE!Did you chose something right out of their book? If not and you picked your own design did they not upcharge you?I really loved their red velvet (.50 per person UGH) but I'm scared of how it will look.. I do think DD might be the way to go b/c Eddas taste was unacceptable. Seriously.
  • edited December 2011
Yeah, we're doing mini cupcakes and other desserts which were bringing in from the outside but when I just told Matt I think I'd rather skip the cake all together he said we "HAD" to have it.Personally I think Cake is over rated. I don't even LIKE cake. But apparently he thinks everyone looks forward to the cake and that we have to have one.I don't even want it. I'd skip it in a heart beat, take that $5 per person credit and put it towards a sick dessert station! UGH.

wow! $5 dollars is High!! i've heard of 2-3 dollars but 5 is high! awww...sorry J! personally i'd go with a cake i know tastes good...and hope, pray they don't mess up your design...I wish you could to a cake design trial! lol

... So what's the difference? If they are going to charge you for using their badass knives you might as well get the vendor that wows you. This is ridiculous, but like mostly everything in life, you mght be able to negotiate this!

I think we're doing DD, but now you're scaring me! I haven't signed anything with them (they told me I could do it a month before the wedding and since I was going then to Miami I was planning to do it then) but I emailed them a picture of the cake I want, and it's Danielle's (CityToShore) cake and asked them specifically if they could do it at the included package price and they said yes .... I hope they aren't going to change that!
  • edited December 2011
I might have been able to negotiate this when we booked but now they've got me and probably won't bend. FML.Dalie, sorry to scare you... I'd check with them. I mean, if they are doing a cake like Danielles at no extra charge then I don't see why they would want to charge us for such a simple design.... Matt is pushing for Eddas b/c he seems to trust them more from a look standpoint. And the Vanilla, Lemon and Chocolate Flavors weren't bad... I think we'll give Ana Paz a try and if we don't love her, we'll go with Eddas. But I honestly don't evne know.

Are you doing fondant or buttercream? I think your cake might have to be fondant and that's the reason. Danielle's was buttercream ....
  • edited December 2011
It's fondant but that's what is included in the package...
  • edited December 2011
Wait wait wait.... They are going to credit you $5 pp for cake then charge you $5 pp to cut the cake. Wouldn't that make you... dare I say ... even? Or am I totally missing something (which is typical).

My venue also charges $5 per slice if we go with an outside vendor.  When we booked we were pretty naive and did not negotiate just thinking that is how it is (so dumb!).

um. that's redonkulous. can you ask your coordinator that? maybe negotiate on their cake-cutting fee? because you really shouldn't have to worry about it being ugly or bad tasting.

Jaime, the Biltmore is the same way. I would give Ana Paz a try, but go to her consultation times in Doral.  At lease it will give you one more option. GL
  • edited December 2011
Shannon I can't get to Doral during the week days b/c I can't take off of work. So the only option is the Gables location on a Saturday. I'm thinking I'll taste her cake at Amy's wedding and if I like it, I'll go for a formal trial. If not, we'll probably settle with Eddas.

Jaime I know you are leaning towards Edda's now, but I would talk to DD about the upcharge again. I am not getting upcharged and fondant is what is included in my pakcage too and its pretty darn simple design. I think if you tell them that you are going to go with someone else if they don't upcharge you then they might come down.
  • edited December 2011
Tiffany, so you are doing a custom design? Are you positive they aren't upcharing you? I wonder why they are doing that to us??? I don't get it. Our design is sooo simple. So simple. Who is your contact there? Perhaps I could call up and speak to that person??
  • edited December 2011
I don't know if it is considered custom, but it certainly wasn't a design from their book. It is a picture I brought it....its in my bio. It seriously doesn't get any simpler than that cake. When I first went in we showed them two designs, one they were going to charge us an extra $35 total to do because they had to order a special baking thing they don't normally use, but i decided against it. I don't have the girls name, sorry I am horrible with names, but she was a youngish girl. I would just ask them what makes it "custom" aside from it being your own design, like what exactly about it costs so much extra for them to make.
  • edited December 2011
I just checked their card again and for sure she wrote $37.50 for effect (i wanted the whole cake covered in sugar crystals) and $20 for each brooch. This picture is also in bio but again we just went with a different style altogether.
  • edited December 2011
which one in your bio is it Tiff?
  • edited December 2011
Doh sorry I am a moron. The one we are doing is the one with the pink ribbon...I think it is a gregory paul photo.
  • edited December 2011
The one right below it was the one they quoted me the 37.50 for and the cost of the brooches.

It is sh&t like this that makes me soooo mad.  How much $ are you giving them, and they can't even provide a decent cake baker that you won't worry that it will actually taste good.  I WISH WISH WISH I would have fought my venue on this.  I hope you stick to your guns and make them (a) provide a better baker, or (b) waive that cake cutting fee.  Why should you be stuck with a lackluster cake with how much $ you are giving them. This is how Eddas and Anas stays in business btw
