Gulf Shores, AL/Pensacola, FL

Hubby and I are taking an early anniversary trip there next May and we were wondering what are must do things, must eat at restaurants, anything else we just have to do while we are there.

We know we want to go to Dauphin Island for a day, go on a dolphin cruise and go snorkeling, but are up in the air about what else to do?

Also I know there are places in pensacola to go snorkeling right off the beach, how about gulf shores, any good recommendations for snorkeling there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

  • I love Gulf Shores!  My family goes every year, just got back last week actually!

MUST GO to Flora-Bama, it's a bar on the Florida Alabama line for great live music and a great time.

There's a big shopping center called The Wharf that is fun to walk around.. Has a few good casual restuarants and a movie theatre.  They have a lot of concerts there as well, so I'd check out what will be there while you're there.

Lulu's is a very good and popular restaurant owned by Jimmy Buffet's sister.. Pretty fun atmosphere!

    Where are you staying?

My parents live in Pensacola!  And I got my bridal pictures taken there :-)  If you go to the beach, there is a $1.00 toll.  If you bear slight right after you go through the toll booth and pass the parking/pavilion for the main beach, if you keep going a couple of miles there is another beach, still with a pavilion and plenty of parking, but it doesn't get as crowded.  Peg Leg Pete's is a good restaurant near the beach but very popular so may have to go at an off time, or there might be a wait.  Scenic 90 Cafe in Pensacola is AWESOME, it's not at the beach but not too far.  You might also enjoy McGuire's Irish Pub in Pensacola...again it's not at the beach but it's not far, and it's a very fun place, although also pretty popular and better to go at an off time if you're worried about waiting.

There are lots of bars and restaurants and beach shops everywhere.  In case you have a rainy day, there is an outlet mall in Foley (about ten minutes from Gulf Shores) with lots of stores and a big food court, and a store called Old Tyme Pottery not far from the outlets where you can find all kinds of cheap treasures for your home.

Sorry I don't know much about snorkeling in the area but I'm sure you can find something if you Google it or maybe ask the people at your hotel when you get there.  Hope the weather is great and you have a wonderful time!

  • Thanks ladies, we actually decided to stay in a condo, we found a really nice one about a mile from the beach, for MUCH cheaper than any of the hotels and it has a full kitchen so we can make breakfasts and lunches to save money and then eat out for dinners!
  • That's the best way to go around there!  Both of the condos my mother has rented in the area that I've stayed at were super nice.

  • So glad to hear that!! The savings on the condo itself and the food costs of being able to do our own breakfasts and picnic lunches really made the trip possible!!
