For those of us who are in that 30 area

Did you notice anything happen with your bodies leading up to your 30th or just after?  It seems like I'm gaining weight suddenly and I really don't like it.  I haven't changed anything in my diet and I'm just as active as I was before, but I feel like I'm getting... heavier.  I feel all gross and stuff.

  • I have heard others say that, but I didn't notice it myself.

    Maybe it's just post wedding?
  • Amoro, I should have asked you yesterday in the ask me anything thread, but how old are you? You look young, and I mean that in the best way.

  • I was in the best shape of my life at 31/32.  It's approaching 40 that's killing me.

  • Yes. I felt like I was falling apart and I definitely started gaining weight, but was able to adjust my diet to minimize the impact. What bugged me the worst is that my weight seemed to shift and I became much bigger around my thighs, which was never a problem for me before.
  • YES!  I all in all feel every bit of growing older.  It isn't necessarily that I've gotten heavier, I mean I have a little bit, but it seems like my body shape is beginning to shift.  Gravity is taking hold more these days.
  • I didn't notice any changes until my late 30's.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Im only 26 so I cant really say but Ive noticed definite changes in my metabolism between age 22 and 24. Even now I have to work a hell of a lot harder to lose 5lbs than I had to 2 years ago.
  • I'm not approaching 30, but I think I've hit the first of my metabolism is slowing down plateus. I eat the same way I did a year ago and am, what seems to me, more active. Yet I've gained 15 lbs. in a year.

  • I turn 30 on Sunday actually.

See, it seems like my butt and thighs and stomach have all gotten ickier and I don't know if it's because of the age thing catching up with me, or if it's because I just changed BC.  But, I've never had a weight issue with pills before so... I dunno?

I honestly wasn't dieting before the wedding, was eating a lot because of stress, and am kind of eating less now.  I've also been walking all over kingdom come because of visitors.  So not enjoying this.
  • Not so much physical changes.  I've noticed changes in my energy level - I definitely DO NOT have the kind of energy I used to, and am usually beat after work.  I've had the doctors check everything and its all normal, so I'm blaming it on adulthood catching up to me (job, house, stress, etc.).  I also noticed that my um... lady hormones started to shift and not get along with my BCP.  I'm convinced that you hit a second wind of sorts in your mid-30's and I'm anxiously waiting for that.

    Oh, and I'm 29.
  • Also you were in the US for awhile.  I gained the US 10 in 2 weeks, let alone 2 months.

Chnage the BC though, I have had problems with certain brands.
  • Well happy early birthday, and from the looks of your sig, I wouldn't worry too much about the booty. It looked mighty fine in October :) And Nebb, I'm at that in between 22 and 24 and things are going south pretty quickly. I just cut out soda all together though, and upped how many days a week I work out. Hopefully that will help.

  • I noticed more mid-late 30s, but your body could definitely be going through some hormonal changes, whether natural or from the new BC.  But after 30, particularly after 35 you start to lose 1lb of muscle per year.

  • Yep.
I used to be super duper skinny...and I still am pretty thin, but I started gaining weight in places where I never did before and my workouts didn't really feel like they were doing anything. I have kind of found a way around it, but I'm still heavier then I was before and no matter what I do the weight just doesn't want to come off. I fucking hate it. So I stopped weighing myself and now I figure as long as I can still fit into my pants I'm good to go.

  • I feel like a bloody shapeshifter. Jeans that fit me in September don't fit me now (you know when you can't get them up over your thighs?) and some of my shirts feel tight in the arms. But I've lost 8lbs since my wedding...

  • yup! I turned 30 and everything went downhill from there.

Yes, I was in the US for a while, but I didn't gain the weight there, I gained it back in Europe.  i can't change the BC because I buy a several month supply when I go back.

I put some boots on that I haven't worn in a year, on NYE, and I could barely zip them over my calves.  GAH!  I almost cried right there.
  • I didn't notice any real changes till my early 40s. I guess in my mid to late 30s, certain body parts weren't quite as "firm" as they'd been before, but I maintained my weight and size till just a couple of years ago. I think I might have been at my absolute best physically when I was about 39. (I've now gone from a 0 to a 2 and at 46, I can live with that!).
  • I'm 32 and I noticed a definite change, in hindsight, after 30. However, I was also put on medicine around the same time that has a side effect of weight gain, so the extra 20 lbs I'm carrying around could also be attributed to that.

The main difference that I notice is that I am not as fast/strong as I used to be and I have less stamina when playing sports. I also tend to get injured more often with pulled/strained muscles and the like. I think it is just harder to stay in shape and I need to step up my exercise routine so that I get a more rounded weekly workout.

  • Yeah, I've also noticed recently with all the walking that I'm constantly having pain in my shoulders and neck.  It hurts.

    This. Although everyone is different.

The bad news as you get older is you do need to watch what you eat more, and exercise becomes a requirement rather than an option if you want to look good.

The good news is that self-discipline becomes easier in these areas the older you get, and exercise makes you feel a lot younger and totally seems more worthwhile the older you get!!

Salt, you so do NOT need to lose weight.
  • Maybe all the walking contributed to your calves getting a little bigger.

Well, you *do* get a bit curvier as you get older, but it's totally OK. Guys dig it.

At 21 weeks pregnant I have bigger boobs and a curvier body than I've ever had in my life (I'm about 15 pounds heavier than I've ever been before too) and I have to fight off  DH more than ever <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />
  • I also felt my body looked amazing about 31-32.  I fluctuate between being 5-10 lbs heavier now, although I can still fit in many clothes.  The problem is that it has shifted to my stomach.  My arms are a little bigger..nothing that can't be fixed with a month at the gym...but the stomach is impossible almost.

The thing I hate most is that it is covered in cellulite and loose looking and always bloated.  And it has nothing to do with having a kid, because I had her 22 years ago and this just started happening about 4 years ago.

I have also noticed the neck loosening up the past year.

You are young enough to just work out regularly...not just cardio, but muscle strengthening too.  Nothing lajor, just keep yourself toned.  I have been very very sporadic and think if I had been more devoted I could have fought this off more.  I didnt need to work out at all in my 20s.

  • Wow Amoro, I would never have guessed you were 30 this year. I thought that you were my age (turning 27 this year) or younger.
  • Amoro, my 30th is a month away, and I've noticed it too.  It might be age.  But, I think there are a lot of factors, for me anyway.

    • FI moving in - now I always cook dinner, whereas before I ate when I was hungry.  I'm sure I'm consuming more calories in a week now.
    • I've been on medicine for headaches for over a year now that has a side effect of gaining weight.  I think the (lack of) ergonomics at work is a contributing factor to my headaches (poor posture = tense muscles = tension headaches) so I'm off the meds and trying to fix the root cause.
    • Drinking more than I used to (it's more fun to go out and have a couple drinks with FI than when I was single, plus we can alternate who drives).

Overall, I've gained 25 pounds in 2.5 years, most of it in the last 18 months.  I've had enough, and am working out a bit more, and I've cut back on alcohol, soda, and portion sizes.

  • (not that 27 and 30 are highly different! But I presumed you were mid 20's, not late)

I too gained about 8-10 lbs in two weeks when we were in the states last year (actually, so did my H), but it fell right off me once we got home.

It is possible that your BC could be responsible. I presume that you're definitely not pregnant?

I am convinced this is one of my problems. Sometimes I'll grab a snack to hold me over until we can sit down to dinner together (which is usually 7:30/8) and then I think, "Hmm. In my single days that snack would have sufficed."
