See, I don't really remember.  That's the problem.  (As in, I remeber reading the thread, I THOUGHT it was on E, I remember there was discussion, but I don't remember what it was about.)  This all probably sounds super sketch, ha.

You know...after reading through a couple other threads, maybe it's not so much backpeddling, as it seems like at some point, you just kind of step out of the discussion and comment on random things instead. So it kind of seems like you've just given up the fight.  But I do that, and I get that.  So I guess maybe I'm just confused?

(I got that from your "Explain this to me" thread on E about the US bailing out the EU.)

I see.  Yeah I was confused about it to begin with.  I wasn't being snarky or sarcastic in the least when I was asking people to explain it to me.  I am absolutely dumb when it comes to economics.  I'm really trying to read up and understand more about it.  But people made some good points in that article that totally made sense to me.  Hence why I may have changed my mind or changed the subject.  I like to go on tangents a lot, so I'm not surprised when I chang ethe subject ;)

You didn't seem to change your mind in that one, just kind of back out of the discussion.  Which, like I said...I do it too when I get tired of the argument, bored with it, frustrated, or just find something else interesting in the thread to talk about.  So I guess at this point I'M backpeddling, not meaning to rake you over the coals.  Does that make sense?  My brain is SERIOUSLY fuzzy, so I can see me not making sense right now.

  • Chels- if I see it in the future, and I still care even a little bit, I'll let you know.

But it's not so much about hypocrisy.  It's more the fact that I value and admire women who know their stuff and can present an argument intelligently and completely.  Like Blue- we've disagreed on things in the past but I still admire that she knows what she's arguing about before she says something and she really believes in what she says.  If she doesn't know much about the subject, she'll even say something along those lines but still be involved in the conversation if it interests her.  I respect that.

What I don't care for is coming into a subject with a strong opinion and then saying you are learning a key aspect of the debate which is leading you to change your mind.  If your opinion is so steadfast, shouldn't you have developed it by learning enough about the topic to even warrant an opinion in the first place?

That was wordy.  Sorry. I deal with numbers more than words these days and I don't get much practice in being concise with what I want to say.

So you'd rather I be stubborn and not admit when I'm wrong when more information is given to me?

ETA The point of a debate is for people to put forth their views because chances are, not everyone has been educated on the topic in the exact same way.  People on both sides of the coin will always bring up new things that I never knew.  And if the other side of the coin starts to bring up more relevant points that change my point of view, then so be it.
  • So what if people backpedal?  I do it all the time.  I run my mouth about something I have no idea about/get riled up and start calling people out of their names/say something that folks find offensive and then I usually follow it with "My bad." and explain why I was wrong/how I can see their point.  I'm all for having strong opinions but there's a difference between "staunch" and "needlessly stubborn".

Yeah I did.  I absolutely did go into that thread assuming I had all the information because it was coming from my mom and my little brother (who was on the team).  When I started to actually read articles about it and get more information, my views did change.  Should I have read the articles first? Yeah.  But it wasn't me changing my mind just because people were pressing the other side of it.
  • Chelsea, I think it's partially because you post a lot of these threads and usually give them really dramatic titles. If you just said "What do y'all think of this? I think yada yada yada, but I'm not really sure so I'd love to hear other opinions." I think that's probably your intention anyway, but it doesn't always come across that way.

I understand what she is getting at, Chels, I think because I've also noticed it.  I don't really know how to explain it any better than she did though, but it's not about whether or not you are being stubborn or hypocritical.  Sorry I can't explain better.
  • No, Chelsea, I don't encourage ignorance.

What I would prefer (which doesn't really matter, because my preference of your posting habits shouldn't rock your world) is if you didn't have such a steadfast opinion that you'd change it based on information that you probably should have known when you formed your opinion, you would acknowledge that you don't know enough about the subject to have such a strong opinion.

It's just my thoughts on it, no biggie.

Actually, the EU thread is a pretty good example from the first post.  I appreciate that you noted later that you didn't really understand economics but your OP was what I would consider to be a stong opinion on the matter: "Haven't you learned, US, that spending money to foster economic growth doesn't really help much?
We need to focus on our own country before we can help others"

ETA: and if you have a strong opinion on it, I would assume you've educated yourself on the subject and that's how you formed the opinion.

I have been accused of backpeddling before when in fact it was the latter.  My view didnt change, but my delivery did.

<div>Actually, I find a lot of your thread titles are not really related to the topic at all. "How does this even happen?" or whatever it was on E and "Seething doesn't even begin to describe me right now" are two examples of really vague titles that dont really say anything to let you know about the topics, which were the US bailing out the Euro and the outrage over stamps for a Muslim holiday respectively.
