What to pack for a cruise??

We finally decided on a 7 night cruise to the Western Carribean!  Now the question is what to pack! Just curious if you ladies had any advice as to how many outfits/bathing suits, etc to pack?

Re: What to pack for a cruise??

  • -2+ bathing suits (they dry VERY slowly...),
-coverups/sundresses for over the bathing suits (since you can go into the casual dining in your bathing suit)
**I usually bring 1 bathing suit and 1 sundress coverup per day because I hate when my stuff is damp or wrinkled.

-shorts/shirts/watershoes for active excursions like ziplining, hiking, etc.
-5 casual dresses/outifts for dinner if you're planning to eat in the dining room
-2 formal outifts/dresses for formal dining nights in the dining room
-jackets and sweaters for nighttime (it is always FREEZING on the ship at night)
-Clothes steamer since they don't have or allow irons on board (you can pay to have thigns pressed)

General rule of thumb: one outfit for every day (whether it be bathing suit and coverup or shorts/skirts and shirt) and one outfit for every night

I always overpack for cruises and realize that all I really wear are bathing suits and coverups by day and sundresses and cocktail dresses at night.

~Plenty of bathing suits so you always have a fresh dry one to wear
~Coverups for walking to and from the pool and around the island when in port
~Comfortable shoes if you plan on doing a lot of walking in port
~Sundresses or nice pants/capris for night time on casual nights for dinner
~Cocktail dresses (for a 7 night cruise there will probably be 2 formal nights)
~Sunscreen and aloe (in case you burn) it's much more expensive to buy on the ship if you forget these things.
~Wrap or cardigan in case you get chilly in the dining room or going for walks on the decks at night
~Make sure your FI packs a suit for formal nights. Formal nights aren't mandatory, but if you're going to eat in the dining room you need to dress up. You can always opt out and have room service delivered or go up to the casual buffets. We enjoy dressing up and going to a nice dinner and seeing a show afterwards.

What you don't need to pack:

~Towels (they provide both bath and beach towels) beach towels are found at the pool area and you can trade them in for a fresh one as often as you'd like.
~Hairdryer (they're in the bathroom of your stateroom)
  • I always overpack (I like having outfit choices), so when I went on a 5 night cruse I brought:

    3 bathing suits
    2 cover ups
4 cute sundresses (to wear to dinner, etc)
1 cocktail dress (they always have one formal night)

and then a few other outfits for the gym, walking around ports, etc.  I think I brought a pair of shorts, capris, then a few shirts to mix and match.

    Liquor in hairspray bottles!
  • Take things you can wear more than once.  I'm taking several skirts with tops that I can wear to dinner then with shorts the next day.  Stick with a basic color and add from there.

After you pack, take about half out.  Most of your shorts can be worn twice without a problem.

I you have long hair, lots of ponytail holders--it's windier than you think. And a hat so you don't burn the first day out.

And in October/November, rain gear--you'll be on the tail end of hurricane season.

  • Also pack an alarm clock and a power strip or something similar for battery charger or hair appliances.  No clocks in the cabin.  There is usually only one outlet in the whole cabin and none in the bathroom.  If you have an inside cabin a night light would be most helpful.

Also, another hint:  copy your passport information pages and send the copy to your email address you can access from any computer, and carry another copy separate from your real passport.
  • I went on a cruise last year and we are goin on one for our honeymoon as well. We both over packed for the first one!!! My advice, pack as many bathing suits as possible, and plenty of sundresses/coverups/flip flops. Then 4-5 pairs of shorts and a top to go with it but really you can wear them more than once because you only wear it for an hour or two a day...
then pack something casual for dinner, then two formal outfits (our cruise had 2 formal dinners) and did not allow jeans in the dining room at any time.

Make sure you have plenty of room in your suitcase to bring home your souvinears! Its tax and duty free!!

    Hope this helps!

<div>This is excellent advice.  Also remember bug repellant and sunscreen.  Depending on where you're going, you may want one of those small, collapsable umbrellas.  Also consider motion sickness medicine or those wristbands.</div>

  • I think PPs covered it.  You will wear a swimsuit for most of the cruise with a cover up, and then dress nicer at night.
