Who cooks

In your household?

Typically I am the one to cook but since I work two nights a week on top of my full time job, FI has been watching some cooking shows on PBS and has found some really good recipes so he's cooking tonight. Although I am sort of exciting about this, I am also kind of nervous. He is an awesome griller as long as he has some patience that day. He can cook things on the stove like beef stroganoff or things in the oven like homemade pizza. The last time he tried making tacos he had the gas turned too high on the stove and burnt the meat and the time he tried making enchiladas he didn't read my recipe right and didn't cook down the onions so they were crunchy. But I have faith in him!

So  who cooks? If SO does cook, what is his best meal?

Also, if anyone has any great carribean recipes please let me know, FI  wants a carribean themed stay at home date night since watching Captain Ron last night (he could have been slightly intoxicated from the horrible packer loss yesterday).

Re: Who cooks

  • I do all the cooking, FI does the BBQing and sometimes salads. As much as I would like him to do more, I'm just more efficient and a better cook.

I don't have any caribbean recipes, but I would think that creole seasoning or jerk seasoning would be involved with chicken or fish. Maybe that with a sweet potato mash?
    www.nurseyk.weebly.com
  • I cook mostly, I love to cook though

Bf does make this awesome chili recipe and he uses the vegetarian beef crumbles when he makes it so I can eat it.  It makes me tear up honestly... lol.. that he thinks to make it vegetarian. I'm such a sap.

    Anniversary

  • I generally do the cooking. BF is amazing with the grill though. He usually treats me a couple times a week to grilled chicken, shrimp, burgers...whatever he's in the mood for. It's nice because it's healthy and I don't have to make it!

For Caribbean recipes - have you tried Jerk Chicken? I don't have my recipe on hand...but you could try one of these:

  • We dont' live together. But whenever we're visiting each other for a weekend or whatever, I always am the one that cooks. I love to cook. Whenever FI does, he messes it up and I have to finish it anyways. haha
Used to be bourgehm. +1,500 posts. Silly knot

  • Danish man is the cook and I'm the baker.  He usually gets home before me so he cooks but on the weekends I take over and make dinner.  But baking has always been my area.  Danish man makes one mean meat sauce pasta or garlic soup!!  OMG I miss garlic soup, the seared ahi tuna comes in closer as a challenger.
  • When BF & I are in the same place (ha!) he does a lot of the cooking... mostly because when he comes to visit, I have to work, so he'll make a big meal for when I get home. He does a pretty damn good job too, so I let him :-)

  • I do most of the cooking for dinner, but H does all the breakfast cooking on weekends.  He also always asks if he can help with dinner, and will usually start cleaning dishes as I use them so there's not a huge mess afterwards.
    Anniversary
  • LIV you just totally made me hungry for Chicken Marsala. I love that dish. I also envy you ladies where you SO helps some sort of way. FI  hates doing dishes, he will put them away but he will not wash them.

Lauren, FI grew up on meat and potatos so he now has a range of foods he eats since moving in with me, his dad is in heaven when he comes over because we make food he doesn't typically get to eat at home.

  • When we have big meals, I usually do the cooking. I'm much more organized in the kitchen and don't get nearly as stressed as he does about hosting dinners. In the summer, he does almost all of the cooking, we didn't use our oven/stove for 3 months this summer (we went a full month not even having one in the house) and used the bbq every single day for all cooked meals. When he is home from work, I am usually working the evening shift (3-11) so I throw something together in the crock pot that morning since I know he won't make something for himself. On days I don't work, I usually cook because he doesn't think ahead to prep things, but he's good at helping with the meals.

We work really well as a team cooking though, when we had a dinner with both sets of our parents, we made the best blue cheese potatoes, steak, grilled vegetable salad, and chicken. Our families still talk about that meal and use our potatoe recipe EVERY time they make a meal for other people, it has become our 'signature dish'.

FI takes care of himself for breakfast and lunch, since I don't eat those meals, but dinner is almost exclusively me. I've gotten to be a decent cook and I really enjoy it. So I usually cook five nights a week. We typically eat out on Tuesdays and Fridays.

I cook because it gives me something to do and makes me feel useful because I'm not working. Last time I was not doing so well when I was unemployed, so my best friend convinced me to start a cooking/recipe blog. It helped give me something to look forward to. FI is lost in the kitchen. He never knows where anything is. But he loves to grill and is awesome at making marinades.

Generally I am the cook. Although FI does go through phases where he cooks more.

He is really good at anything Mexican and pulled pork.

Most nights we cook together, but I'm the one who usually does the meal planning. FI is in complete charge of weekend breakfast cooking and all meat handling/cooking, and I am the designated baker.

Oh I almost forgot! FI is really good at making Thai curries. Yum.

  • We trade off pretty equally, and we do a lot of cooking together. My kitchen sucks (till the weekend, when I move, woohoo! Bigger kitchen with counter space awaits!), so there is a lot of sandwich making!

  • BF and I don't live together but I think that when we do I'll probably do most of the cooking because I really enjoy it and BF is sort of particular about washing dishes (and I hate it!). I think it'll work out nicely. :)

I like to make Cajun shrimp (closest thing to carribbean I can think of) - just fry it with oil and garlic and season it with "Cajun Foreplay." Then I usually make snow pea and asparagus salad to go along with it - boil the asparagus & snow peas for about 2 minutes then garnish it with half a lime, some olive oil, walnuts and parmesean cheese. Rice goes really well with this too. The whole meal is really easy.

Let us know what he makes!

  • BF is the cook in the house, in part because he normally gets off earlier than I do, and in part because he was in culinary.  I normally end up having to decide on what recipe we'll use though...and I buy the groceries.  I'm more likely to bake than cook, especially since we finally have a kitchenaid.
  • FI probably cooks three meals for every one that I cook. He learned how to cook from his mom and his Oma. My mom was very much the spaghetti/hot dog/mac & cheese cooker, and my dad did the grilling. FI has tried to teach me some things, but I ask a LOT of questions, so sometimes he gets a little annoyed. Plus, he tends to bring up my mistakes/failures from time to time. Not in a mean way, but sometimes it makes me not want to try anymore. So any of you who have FIs that are learning how to cook, be supportive, and patient! It's hard trying to learn something in a short amount of time that you've learned over the course of your whole life!

    Still here and still fabulous!

  • We each do our own thing for breakfast, so it's usually oatmeal or grits with fruit. Lunch is usually leftovers for him and Healthy Choice for me.
Dinner is all me. He has occasionally done stuff, but as someone else said, it's simple stuff like grilled cheese. He can cook well when he does it, but he doesn't think to combine things. If he has a bunch of ingredients, he'll make them all separately whereas I'd find a way put them all together, lol.

Also, similar to what Lauren said, he hasn't had much experience, but it's because his mom never let him help. She did and still does everything including loading up his plate for him when we go there. She's tried to do it with me, but I don't let her.

I love cooking though, so I don't mind and he's good about helping with dishes afterwards.

  • I cook in our house.  Like your BF, my guy is a great griller but beyond that it's too much for him unless he just has to pre heat the oven or set the microwave for a certain amount of time LOL

The trade off that we do is that I figure out the menus and make sure we have the ingredients, prep and cook.  He puts all the left overs away (if we have them) cleans up including dishes and unloads the diswasher when its done.  I hate dishes and I like to try and cook clean low fat meals so this works out for both of us.

That would not work for me! No way!

I love to cook, sometimes just too tired!

I like the fact that he's becoming a little more involved in that aspect. He is making one skillet Chicken Parmesan with Spaghetti Squash instead of noodles. There is some show on PBS that had it on there and since we don't have cable im sure it was a last resort show on Thur night when I was at work.

Mmm, that sounds delicious!! I love chicken parmesan!

FMIL will let FI grill at times when she doesn't want to go outside, but she's essentially the puppet master because she tells him when to flip it, when not to flip it, and if he brings it in, she'll send it back out until she thinks it's done. Control freak, she is, yep.

If my parents try doing that to me, I tell them I'm cooking and they can kindly remove themselves from the kitchen, lol. I tried cooking for FMIL once a short time ago and have since decided that I will no longer cook for her unless I bake or do crock pot. If I make pork chops again, it'll be hard to resist the urge to cook the life out of it and tell her I did it how she likes it. I think I may need to work on letting things go, lol.

I usually do a lot of the cooking, but BF loves to help out. So usually it's a a team effort unless he has to work late, in that case I always have dinner waiting for him when he gets home.

I always try to set up a nice dinner. Get everything set out and maybe light some candles and get him his whatever he wants to drink ready, and then we sit down together at the table and shut everything off and just eat and talk. I really like it because we got so used to eating in front of the TV, and it's nice to have some personal time and enjoy each other with no distractions.

I think our neighbors thought we were weird when we first moved into our house. They live across the street and can actually see into our big kitchen window and would stair at us when we sit at the table and eat together so we used to have to shut our blinds so they couldn't see in. I didn't think it was odd for two 20 some yr olds to want to sit and have a nice dinner together and actually talk, glad im not the only one! Our friends all sit in front of the tv and eat.

  • BF does most of the dinner cooking. I like to say I'm his sous chef! But I cook breakfast most of the time (though that mostly consists of eggs and toast, so...) BF is great at cooking steak and chicken. His best dish I think is Shoyu Chicken. IT'S SO OMFG GOOD! http://allrecipes.com/recipe/shoyu-chicken/detail.aspx

Neither one of us has really good technique or really good training. Neither of our parents really homecooked meals growing up (though my dad did grill a lot). And sometimes BF can get OUT OF CONTROL with the spice and hot sauce. I like to cook a new recipe as is for the first time, then tweak it to my liking later if the base recipe is good. BF will throw everything but the kitchen sink into a recipe so it's sometimes hard to know if the recipe is good, bad or okay and what impact his "experimentation" has on it, but most of the time, he does well!

Re: sitting at the table and eating: I wish FI and I do this more. We have a lovely dining room set that was given to us by a friend of FI's mom (she was going to throw it out!). We are lucky enough to even have a dining room in our apartment. We set it up with every intent of using it at least once a week. However, before we knew it, the dining room table was becoming that place we put things when we have no other place to put them. Then we got the rabbit, who lives in the dining room, and his cage makes our table inaccessible. So now we're kind of stuck eating in front of the TV in the living room. I hope one day we can have a place big enough to have an accessible dining area. ....end of ramble :)

  • Oh our table is also for the mail, random junk, whatnot but we make sure not to cover the two places where we sit! I don't put the cooked food at the table, just out plates and drinks so our table is never completely cleaned off unless we are having company!

  • There's been a shift in our relationship over the years and now I am the primary cook in our household. When we first got together he did a lot of cooking, mostly greasy, spicy, delicious but insanely unhealthy fare (like green beans baked in chili peppers, butter and a pile of parmesan cheese). It was a nice change from my ex who expected me to do all the cooking.
Since I had B, I'm eating a lot better than I used to. I started pitching in with the sides while BF cooked the meat (that seems to be our summer routine, we BBQ every day, weather permittting). Now I'm cooking most of our meals, It's working out well with B starting to eat real food, I can make sure his isn't too spicy or anything :)
  • When FI and I first moved in together almost 2 years ago, he did most of the cooking because I really only knew how to make simple things like tacos lol (I was never taught to cook when I lived with my parents, a regret I now have). But he has been teaching me, and I now do most of the cooking. I don't work (my dad wants me to focus on school) but FI has a full time job and full time school, so it's just fitting that I do the cooking.

I don't have any carribbean recipes though, sorry!
  • I'm extremely picky, especially now that I'm on a diet, so I do most of the cooking. FI offers to make me breakfast on the weekends and dinner once or twice a week, but I usually turn him down because he likes weird shiit.
