[QUOTE]In Response to Re: A post about debt : Always. I think some one mentioned once (lpstl?) that these can not possibly be true. Maybe with the clicky poll it will be, but most people have way more debt than we see mentioned on this board as a national average. <strong>ps- you were wooed on SB, not that you could stand it there ;)</strong>

[QUOTE]I feel like these threads just turn into a pissing match of who has the most or the least debt, in a braggy way.

    <div>Really? hun. </div><div>
</div><div>I think everyone approaches debt different...I genuinely can't imagine ever not having a mortgage. I know it is possible, I just can't imagine getting there.  My parents moved a lot so we always had one. But FILs paid their home off years ago, maybe easier to do if you live in the same home for 30 years.</div><div>
</div><div>I don't see most debt as the end of the world, more as a part of life. I do think that many people live with too much debt though and that can be unhealthy emotionally. We have debt, it is part of life, and we budget accordingly. But I don't see it as a pissing match, I know there are people with plenty more and plenty less debt. I figure I can't take money with me when I die, but I also don't want to let it (money or debt) ruin my life while I am alive either.</div>

  • With H doing school on his own, we're in the 20 to 50 category and paying it off pretty aggressively.  It's a lot, but not bad considering where he was 2 years ago.

I am in the 1000-10000 but the sad thing is it is all bad debt. We have no car payments (payed off both), no student loans (although I probably will have 10,000-20,000 by the time I'm done), and we rent still. I guess it's low compared to some people but since it's almost all mine, and BF is paying it now, it still makes me feel like crap. Although I am busting my ass to keep those student loans low (working on getting more scholarships for when I transfer to my four year school), so I guess that's something.

  • My debt was pretty much all accumulated within a few years in my mid-20's and in college.  I rarely use my CC's now, but it sure is hard to get them paid off.  I'm around $16k between 2 cards. I really wish I could go back in time and tell my younger self how much paying those CC's would suck.

I have no debt except for med school debt but it is substantial and I really get tied up in knots when I think about it.  I get paid crud as a resident and if I had a "real" job I could actually afford things.  But hey in a few years I may be able to buy things.  Tongue out

  • kiki- you look glowing :) Sorry I didn't comment sooner but I have not been around! Gorgeous darling!
  • most of mine is "good" debt--student loans and car payment. 7% is bad debt, and that's what we're going to pay off first. we also have a mortgage.

  • Aw I didn't want it to be a pissing match.

I was just curious because people talk about saving here and there and paying off all their debt in just a few years. I would have to save my full years salary to pay off our debt, so I wonder at how people can pay off all their debt in such a short time. I know all of the people in my circle talk about having "no debt" or how they got rid of all of their debt because they don't count student loans, car payments, etc.
  • Thanks Meaghan!

  • $130,000 student loan debt. Zero other debt.
  • I said between $500 and $1000.  That isn't bad considering we have a $400 car payment and $300 in student loans.  We don't really have any other debt, so we are fine with it.

  • pretty much the only debt i have is student loans. i'm in the 50+ rank. w/o student loans i only owe 1 cc and my car, together a combined amount of less the $4,000. my house is paid for, our other car is paid for, everything else is paid in cash.
sadly i picked a $hitty profession, so looks like my debt will be there for a VERY long time.

  • Holy sheet, I can't believe the responses to this poll. Per month? That just seems insane!

I don't know how I'd cope with that.

What??  I don't think anybody has $50k in debt payments <em>per month</em>.... we're talking totals here.

I am over $50k, but it's all student loans.

Debt itself is not important to me, I think in terms of net worth.  And paying off debt is not necessarily the best thing for your net worth.

  • I apparently love being late to these threads...

Poli, do NOT do income based repayment.  You will kill yourself for the next 25 years to stay POOR enough for that, and if you come off of it, its going to bust up your payment like no other.  Call your loan company and ask them about a consolidation loan, and then about reconfiguring your payment plan to get your payment down to an affordable rate.  You may tack some years on, but you won't kill yourself paying it back.
