But I'm not sure I get what you're trying to say here. The message isn't really clear.

I'm late, but I had to.

  • You can't really change the name of a Dollar, because then where would you shop? The Washie Store? Washie General?  Just doesn't work as well.
    image
  • Mel, I recommend throwing the word "bollocks" around. It's fun and multi-cultural!
  • Tree, we're talking about money and not Lala ya know...?

Now, see, bollocks and rubbish I get away with just fine.  I really want to be able to say "mates" and "flat" though.  But apparently some phrases just don't work on me.  Like the time I said I had "Cramps like whoa," and he told me to go outside and come back in again so we could erase what just happened.

    I like "washies" :)
  • I admit I say "like whoa" a lot now. And Mr. P just gives me the blank stare of doom. I don't care, I do what I want!!

Also, my favorite word is "fuckstockings". Thank you, Christopher Moore.

I need to see the context on this one.  Is this
    a) Gah!  Fuckstockings, I closed my finger in the door!
    or
    b) Oh, Mr P...come on in here and see my new fuckstockings

    ??
  • We get lots of cool names like,

    bucks
    dolla dolla bill ya'll
    cheese
    bread
    cheddar
    stacks
    c-note
benjamins (b/c it is all about them)

And you can even say fifty cent and be talking about a rapper or 2 quarters.  Come on now - that's like genius.

  • I said fitty cent the other day.  FI just shook his head at me.  White Kansas girl =/= gangsta.

  • Mel, I shall demonstrate:

"Hey Manda, the kitchen is on fire."

    "Fuckstockings!"
  • You guys should come over to my mixed up, cultural-mutt level. I routinely use "bloody hellfire" and call poeple "tossers" or "poopalls". It's bad. I get the "what the fuuck planet are you from!?" look all the time.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: In honor of Best Threads 2010 : Not to mention, remember when the SA bucket was accompanied by a nice man in a santa suit who rang a bell?  Now it's just some dude in sweatpants on his cell phone.  All that money you're using for your disgusting political agenda, and yet you can't spare the $50 for the costume rental anymore?  Yuck.

I actually work with the SA and their agenda might not be ideal but they are still doing a good thing. Every organization has an agenda. It sucks.

Children who would not have recieved anything for Chirstmas got new bikes and new Ipods and clothes. People who may not have had food will now have food.  I actually rang the bell this year and I am under 5 ft tall and 100 pounds. I'd look pretty dumb in a men's santa outfit and the volunteers here are not allowed to use cell phones while working. The SA here is actually having a hard time finding volunteers. They take whoever is kind enough to vlounteer their time.

You'll notice in my previous post that I stated that the SA does some good.  However, my overwhelming disgust with their ideals and agenda is more than enough to keep my money out of their wee bucket.  The post you quoted is more nonsense than anything, and I think that's obvious.  Given the actual grievances I have with the organization, I doubt you think my true gripe has anything to do with the santa suit (though the cell phone really does piss me off).  I don't doubt that you give your time based upon your desire to do good, and I think that's admirable.  Perhaps you'll be able to affect positive change.
  • Yes stop putting money in their buckets. You do realize the only people you will be punishing is the people who actually need help, right?

How about we just shut down the SA all together? That would help out tons of people.

Look, I am very much for gay rights, as I am bisexual, and if it were up to me, religion would have no part in any aspect of society but sometimes the good outweighs the bad especially this time of the year when children won't have a Christmas.
    image
  • She didn't say she doesn't give donations at all, but like me, chooses to give them to other organizations in the same vein. People still get the help, just not through an organization with policies that large sections of the populous disagree with.

If we all blindly support the Salvation Army rather than doing a bit of research and coming up with an alternative charity that we do agree with, then what pressure does that put on them to change their outdated stance?

Not saying that I don't respect you for donating time to them, I do. I just choose to put my hard earned money towards a charity that I personally agree with.

Well that's just silly to me.  There are plenty of other places who accept my donations but who don't have political and religious beliefs that turn my stomach.  Choosing to make my donations to organizations who don't behave in a way that I find abhorrent and who don't hold to beliefs that I find to be ridiculous doesn't mean I'm turning my back on the children (at Christmas!)  It means I've decided to make a donation that I'm comfortable with to an organization that I find just as beneficial.  I honestly don't understand why you're arguing this.  I fully respect what you do for the charitable organization of your choice.  The fact that I don't agree with that organization has nothing to do with you.

[QUOTE]Add that to the fact that a SA in Edmonton was burning Harry Potter and Twilights that were donated to them and I can't do anything but scoff at them (though I do feel bad when I walk past the old people with their buckets and they give you the " I know you have a toonie in your pocket " look. I'd rather give it to Tim freaking Horton's than the Salvation Army).

The SA is a HUGE organization. If everyone  had the same thought process than they would have to shut down. I am sure that would be a huge loss for the homeless/less fortunate population. Maybe it's just b/c I have personally worked there and I see the good they actually do. It Just makes me sad that people would pass up the buckets for any reason (well not any but YKWIM).

And Alix I know what you were saying. :P

But not everyone has the same thought process, so they're safe. And I think most people who would actually have given money to the SA and choose not to due to their beliefs are giving money elsewhere - others who just talk about it and don't give money elsewhere probably weren't actually giving money to the SA to begin with.
